Odisha sets target of becoming developed state by 2036: Deputy CM Deo

Advt Advt Odisha is open to any kind of investment which adds to its growing economy as it has set a target of becoming a developed state by 2036 and achieving a GDP of $1.5-trillion by 2047, Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo said on on the sidelines of the 4th CII East India Summit 2025 here, Deo also exhorted the industry to invest in Odisha and create more jobs in the state."The Prime Minister has set a target of (making India a developed nation) 2047 whereas Odisha has set a target of 2036. That is when Odisha is going to complete its 100 years. So, we are trying to move ahead and put whatever is expected by the Central government from the state," said Deo, who holds the portfolio of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers' Empowerment and the Ministry of confident of achieving the state's own targets, he said that Odisha is going to be a major contributor in the Viksit Bharat 2047 mission of the Indian Government."We would like to invite people into tourism, agri-food processing and steel. We already have a lot of investment in steel but then we would look at value addition on steel products. Apart from that, in the energy sector, we are a coal-bearing state where a lot of thermal power is generated. We are looking for floating solar, pump storage and battery storage projects, any kind of investment where the GDP can be increased," he the same time, the state also wants to develop agro-industries and cut the use of fertilisers, he said the state government has come out with an industrial policy which provides a lot of insight into the kind of hand-holding it can do for the people."We can develop tourism. We want to do agri-tourism because nobody looks at agriculture from the tourism point of view, where a farmer can have people come and stay on his farm. We want employment generation schemes to be put in, where the local population of Odisha does not have to migrate out of the state and they get jobs at their doorstep," he said."Now, all the policies are for the investors who have to look at that policy and then come. But we can't come up with a policy to suit one individual," he states will never be able to steal a march over states that have a forced climate, he said, and added, "Look East. We have come to the West to ask the West to also look East. If the sun rises there, the sun will set here."

Andhra Pradesh govt seeks sweeping powers to monitor social media posts, prompting fears of misuse

The N Chandrababu Naidu government in Andhra Pradesh is seeking sweeping powers to monitor social media posts, saying that it wants to prevent online abuse of women, especially those in politics. Home Minister V Anitha said a Bill will be tabled in the Legislative Assembly soon to pass a law to take action against offensive posts against women, misinformation, and false propaganda. The YSRCP has accused the government of trying to pass laws to muzzle it from criticising the TDP-led NDA government, in the guise of laws against offensive posts. 'A fact-finding committee is being set up to scrutinise social media posts which target women, especially women MLAs and political leaders. Based on the recommendations of the committee, we will table a Bill in the Assembly to bring an Act to not only curb offensive and derogatory social media posts but also take action against them,' Anitha said. Sources said that the government is also targeting alleged misinformation and 'false propaganda' by the YSRCP about the super-six schemes of the TDP-NDA government, as well as the capital city of Amaravati. Anitha, a former teacher who joined politics in 2013, has herself been a target of objectionable messages and trolling on social media. In March, a new women's safety mobile application, Suraksha, was launched by the Naidu government in response to complaints of abusive posts online, as well as for the general safety of women in public spaces. 'Criticism of political leaders and ministers is acceptable, but not obscene and vulgar language. These days, anyone with a political opinion is posting whatever they want, using the most vulgar language sometimes. It is often directed at women. Stalking and harassment of women is going on on social media. My government has adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards crimes against women,' Anitha said, dismissing allegations that the government wants to muzzle Opposition criticism. 'YSRCP leaders deliberately spread false information like floods in Amaravati have sunk the capital, which has not happened. The YSRCP is also issuing negative statements about all the development activity that the government has taken up. It is not right,' she said. Deputy Chief Minister K Pawan Kalyan has repeatedly spoken about the abuse of women online and has appealed to the CM to take steps. The YSRCP maintains that women have become unsafe in the state. The party's official spokesperson, A Shyamala, said that atrocities against women in Andhra Pradesh under the TDP-led coalition government have increased. 'What promises were made to women before the elections, and what is happening today? Women are left with no protection,' Shyamala said. 'During YS Jagan's tenure, women had the protection of the Disha App. What benefit has the coalition's so-called Suraksha app delivered? Women employees and even IPS officers are facing humiliation under this regime.'
