Lionel Messi's bodyguard suspended in latest controversy

New York Posta day ago
Lionel Messi's bodyguard is once again embroiled in controversy.
Yassine Cheuko will be suspended from all technical areas for the remainder of the Leagues Cup after an incident during Inter Miami's game against Atlas on Wednesday night.
'After the July 30 Inter Miami CF vs. Club Atlas match, a member of Inter Miami's club delegation displayed improper conduct by entering restricted areas without an official event credential,' the Leagues Cup disciplinary committee said in a press release.

'In accordance with the Leagues Cup 2025 Tournament Regulations, the Disciplinary Committee has suspended the individual involved from all technical areas for the remainder of Leagues Cup 2025 and issued an undisclosed fine to Inter Miami CF.'
The individual was reported to be Cheuko by ESPN.

Cheuko, an ex-MMA fighter who has been Messi's personal bodyguard since the megastar's time at Paris Saint-Germain, went onto the field after Wednesday's match to break up a discussion between players from the two teams.
Afterward, Atlas player Matheus Doria said the bodyguard's actions were uncalled for.

'We already know that our board works very well and will take care of the issue. I understand that Messi's bodyguard is there to protect Messi from a possible entry by a fan, I don't know, but between players, he doesn't have that permission,' Doria said.

'It's not up to us to say much or give our opinion on the matter, but the board and those in charge of the Leagues Cup have already seen it and will take charge of what can and can't be done because as long as it protects not only Messi but the other players, and the physical integrity of the players who are there, that's fine. But if it's for other issues, no one will agree, but it's not up to me to do anything.'
In April, Cheuko was banned by Inter Miami from being on the sidelines during MLS matches, although he remained a member of the club's security team.

Leagues Cup roundup: Paulinho, Toluca stay hot with win over CF Montreal

Paulinho scored on an acrobatic bicycle kick in the 26th minute to put Toluca ahead in a 2-1 victory over CF Montreal in their Matchday 2 clash in Phase One of the Leagues Cup on Friday night in Harrison, N.J. Jesus Angulo leveled for Toluca (1-0-1, 5 points) three minutes earlier, after Efrain Morales' header from a corner kick gave Montreal (0-1-1, 2 points) the lead in the 20th minute. Paulinho's third goal of the tournament then lifted Toluca to its second positive result after falling behind. In their Leagues Cup opener on Tuesday, the Diablos Rojos rallied from two down to a 2-2 draw at Columbus and earned an extra point via penalty shootout. Montreal striker Prince Owusu received a red card after the final whistle and will be suspended for his side's Phase One finale against Puebla. Morales' goal was his first playing for an MLS team. The 21-year-old center back joined Montreal from Atlanta United in a July 23 trade. Angel Correa scored his third and fourth goals of the tournament and his Tigres UANL career to punish a pair of San Diego mistakes and put his visiting side closer to the knockout phase. In only the Argentine's fourth appearance in all competitions since his move from Atletico Madrid, Correa put Tigres (2-0-0, 6 points) in front in the 31st minute on a rebound of Juan Brunetta's shot, one goalkeeper Pablo Sisniega should've held. Brunetta then assisted Correa's winner in the 67th minute immediately following a turnover by San Diego (0-2-0, 0 points) in its own half. The winning goal came 12 minutes after Tomas Angel pulled the hosts level with a deflected effort from near the penalty spot. Thomas Hasal saved two penalties and host Los Angeles converted all four of its shots to earn the extra point and keep its knockout phase hopes alive following its draw against Pachuca. Both teams finished regulation with 10 men, though LAFC (0-0-2, 3 points) played short-handed for far longer. Denis Bouanga put LAFC in front in the 10th minute before teammate Nathan Ordaz was sent off in the 29th for throwing an elbow into the chest of Pachuca defender Sergio Barreto. Elias Montiel leveled with a low half-volley from just beyond the penalty area three minutes after Ordaz's dismissal. But Pachuca (1-0-1, 4 points) couldn't turn their advantage into another goal, then saw their own ranks reduced in the 83rd minute when Jhonder Cadiz's bicycle-kick attempt caught Nkosi Tafari in the head. Diego Rossi scored his second tournament goal and assisted another as Columbus won comfortably over visiting Puebla. Malte Amundsen and Andres Herrera also scored for Columbus (1-0-1, 4 points) in a match where all the goals came before halftime. The 18-year-old Taha Habroune had two assists for the Crew, who drew with Toluca 2-2 in their first match before losing the ensuing penalty shootout. Esteban Lozano pulled a goal back in first-half stoppage time for Puebla (1-1-0, 3 points), which has allowed multiple goals in three of five matches across all competitions since the 2025 Liga MX Apertura began. Fabio Gomes scored his second goal of the tournament after halftime as visiting Mazatlan boosted its chance of advancing to the knockout phase for a third consecutive tournament. Facundo Almada also scored before the break for Mazatlan (1-0-1, 5 points), which reached the round of 32 in 2023 and the quarterfinals last year. Ricardo Gutierrez made six saves to keep his second clean sheet since the Apertura started, after he was the victorious goalkeeper in a penalty shootout following Mazatlan's 1-1 draw at LAFC to open the tournament. Houston (0-2-0, 0 points) has now lost seven of its last 10 in all competitions, with six of those defeats coming by multiple goals. Alonso Martinez and Agustin Ojeda scored before halftime and New York City completed a dominant victory over Leon in Harrison, N.J. Matt Freese saved a second-half penalty kick by James Rodriguez and made four total stops to keep a clean sheet and help NYCFC (1-1-0, 3 points) rebound after absorbing a 3-0 loss to Puebla in their opening match. It was Freese's seventh clean sheet in all competitions and the Pigeons' eighth. Leon (0-1-1, 1 point) is now scoreless in its last 169 minutes and has scored only three goals in five games since opening Liga MX Apertura play last month. They drew CF Montreal 1-1 in their opener before losing the ensuing penalty shootout. --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2025 - All Rights Reserved

Lionel Messi's Leagues Cup injury confirmed as "hamstring discomfort"

Lionel Messi exited Saturday night's Leagues Cup match against visiting Necaxa in the 11th minute due to a right leg injury. After Inter Miami completed its 2-2 draw, manager Javier Mascherano declared Messi felt "hamstring discomfort." The 38-year-old Messi's exit brings a halt to an exceptional run of clean health, the longest since he joined Miami in July 2023. He had played in every minute of 16 consecutive matches for Miami between MLS regular season and FIFA Club World Cup play before his failure to appear in the 2025 MLS All-Star Game resulted in a one-match suspension against FC Cincinnati a week ago. He returned Wednesday night for Miami's Leagues Cup opener against Atlas and provided two assists -- one leading to the game-winner late -- in a 2-1 victory. Neither team scored prior to Messi's exit Saturday, though Miami's Telasco Segovia scored shortly thereafter to put Miami in front. Necaxa took a 2-1 lead with the Herons reduced to 10 men when Marcelo Weigandt was sent off for denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity, but Inter Miami rallied for the equalizer in extra time. Messi, an eight-time Ballon d'Or winner, has not scored in the Leagues Cup. But in MLS play, he is tied for the league lead with 18 goals. Messi's run of consecutive appearances was in stark contrast to his first two MLS seasons, during which he missed significant portions of regular-season play. After playing all seven matches of Miami's run to the 2023 Leagues Cup title, minor ailments limited Messi to just six appearances among Miami's last 12 regular-season games that year. He also dealt with multiple issues in 2024, the most pronounced being an extended recovery from a torn leg muscle sustained while playing for Argentina during the 2024 Copa America final that July. He played in only 19 games in his first full MLS season, but he still scored 20 goals and had 16 assists to earn the league's 2024 MVP award. --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2025 - All Rights Reserved

Leagues Cup roundup: Lionel Messi injures hamstring as Inter Miami top Necaxa

Lionel Messi left injured in the 11th minute with hamstring discomfort, but Inter Miami earned a 5-4 penalty shootout win against visiting Necaxa following a 2-2 draw in Matchday 2 of Leagues Cup Phase One play on Saturday night. Miami (1-0-1, 5 points) converted all of their penalties, with Luis Suarez clinching the extra point with a finish off the underside of the crossbar after a wild game that saw both teams finish with 10 men. Herons goalkeeper Rocco Rios Novo made one save, thwarting Tomas Badaloni's attempt from the spot. Earlier, Badaloni scored his third of the tournament in the 33rd minute for Necaxa (1-0-1, 4 points), who played 11-on-10 for 43 minutes after Inter Miami's Maximiliano Falcon was ejected for denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity with a 17th-minute foul. Cristian Calderon's second yellow card in the 60th minute evened numbers before Necaxa's Ricardo Montreal and Miami's Jordi Alba traded goals after the 80th minute. Miami's Telasco Segovia opened the scoring a minute after Messi's departure. The 38-year-old Messi limped off the field under his own power. Miami manager Javier Mascherano confirmed postgame that Messi felt hamstring soreness, and expressed optimism it was relatively minor. Club America 3 (8), Minnesota United 3 (7) All eight penalty takers converted to lift 10-man Club America to an important two points with an 8-7 penalty shootout victory after rallying from behind three times. Sebastian Caceres' 90th-minute header pulled America (0-0-2, 3 points) level from behind for a third time in the match and fifth time in the tournament. Goalkeeper Luis Malagon then followed a sensational denial of Carlos Harvey in second-half stoppage time with a penalty save of Nicolas Romero on Minnesota's eighth PK to help seal the shootout win. The Mexico City outfit previously tied it at 1-1 through Michael Boxall's own goal in the 27th minute and 2-2 on Jose Zuniga's 53rd-minute contribution. Tani Oluwaseyi and Bongi Hlongwane each scored their second goals of the tournament for Minnesota (1-0-1, 4 points). Harvey then put the Loons up 3-2 in the 65th minute, three minutes after America's Igor Lichnovsky received his second yellow card. Pumas UNAM 3, Atlanta United 2 Coco Carrasquilla completed a second-half brace for his second and third goals of the tournament and Pumas held on for victory despite the late ejection of their goalkeeper. Alvaro Angulo scored the earlier goal for Pumas (1-0-1, 5 points). Then he played in goal for the final moments after Keylor Navas was sent off in the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time in a match played in Orlando, Fla. Atlanta (0-2-0, 0 points) took a 2-1 lead into halftime through an own-goal from Navas and a late-first-half strike from Emmanuel Latte Lath. But the Five Stripes were eliminated from tournament contention after conceding multiple second-half goals for a second consecutive match. Carrasquilla leveled at 2-2 in the 62nd minute with a powerful finish from the edge of the penalty area, then put Pumas in front in 89th when he put in the rebound of his own saved penalty. Atletico San Luis 2 (4), Real Salt Lake 2 (1) Andres Sanchez saved one penalty in regulation, then one more to help visiting Atletico San Luis to a hard-earned shootout win in Sandy, Utah. Miguel Garcia and Joao Pedro scored in regulation for San Luis (0-1-1, 2 points) before all four PK takers converted in the tiebreaker (4-1). Braian Angulo scored both goals for Real Salt Lake (0-0-2, 3 points), including an 88th-minute equalizer that snuck inside the far right post on what looked to be an intended cross. But Diego Luna's failure to convert from the spot in regulation against Sanchez forced the shootout, where Brayan Vera missed the target and Sanchez saved Justen Glad. Orlando City 3, Atlas 1 Martin Ojeda scored the decisive goal in the 57th minute to boost Orlando City's hopes of reaching the knockout phase and eliminate visiting Atlas from contention. Ivan Angulo opened the scoring, and Marco Pasalic added very late insurance 12 minutes into second-half stoppage time seal the win for Orlando (1-0-1, 4 points). The Lions opened their tournament with a 1-1 draw against Pumas UNAM and lost the ensuing penalty shootout. Matias Coccaro briefly leveled the contest in the 50th minute for Atlas (0-2-0, 0 points), which lost its opening match 2-1 to Inter Miami on a stoppage-time goal assisted by Messi. Coccaro was later sent off in second-half stoppage time before Pasalic's tally for his role in a late skirmish that involved several players from both teams. --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2025 - All Rights Reserved
