Trump's tariff threat puts Indian rupee in firing line, traders reckon RBI may step in

MUMBAI: The Indian rupee is set to open weaker on Thursday after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened a 25% levy on Indian exports before adding that negotiations between the two countries are still ongoing. Traders reckon that the Reserve Bank of India may step in to limit the rupee's losses as the currency moves closer to its all-time low of 87.95 hit earlier this year. The 1-month non-deliverable forward indicated that the rupee will open in the 87.66-87.69 range versus the U.S. dollar, compared with 87.42 in the previous session. Trump's threatened 25% levy on Indian goods, in addition to an unspecified penalty for buying Russian oil and involvement in the BRICS group, may strain relationships between the world's largest economy and the most populous democracy. 'We're talking to India now - we'll see what happens … You'll know by the end of this week,' Trump told reporters after announcing the tariff on a social media post. India's equity benchmarks were poised to open weaker on the day with analysts pointing out that all eyes will now be on how negotiations progress. 'We expect more drama to unfold in coming days and the rupee, therefore, could see major gyrations,' said Abhishek Goenka, chief executive at FX advisory firm IFA Global. 'We may see the RBI step in to curb volatility and smoothen (INR) depreciation,' he added. The rupee has declined 2% so far this year and is among the worst performing regional currencies, pressured by uncertainty on trade policies and persistent foreign outflows from local equities. Overseas investors have net sold about $2 billion of local stocks over July so far, and analysts reckon that negative cues on trade could keep up the pressure. Elsewhere, the U.S. Federal Reserve kept policy rates unchanged on Wednesday and gave little indication of when rates may be cut again. The dollar index rose nearly 1% and was last quoted at 99.7. Given the negative cues, the central bank would 'most likely need to stay active,' a Singapore-based trader at a bank said. The trader pointed out that price-action indicated that the RBI had likely stepped into the non-deliverable forwards market as well to support the rupee overnight.

BAT's arm acquired, Accenture now a partner: SYS expands global BPO reach

KARACHI: Pakistan's leading software exporter Systems Limited (SYS), has taken a bold leap to expand its global footprint in the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) sector by acquiring British American Tobacco SAA Services (Pvt) Ltd and forging a new partnership with global consulting giant Accenture (UK) Limited. The acquisition, announced on Wednesday, involves purchasing the BPO arm from British American Tobacco International Holdings (UK) Limited. The Target Company offers IT-led shared services spanning omni-channel customer support, marketing operations, HR, finance, procurement, and supply chain management — across multiple geographies. SYS's UAE-based associate, Techvista Systems FZ LLC, will now deliver AI-powered shared services under a multi-year Master Services Agreement with Accenture, positioning the acquired company as a sub-contractor in a strategic delivery role. Industry analysts have welcomed the move. Muhammad Sohail of Topline Securities described it as 'perfectly aligned with SYS's BPO strategy,' adding that the acquisition marks a bold step to expand its global footprint and strengthen its digital services business. The Share Purchase Agreement was finalized on July 29, 2025, with the deal subject to standard regulatory approvals and closing conditions. In parallel, Techvista secured its own long-term outsourcing contract with Accenture, dated July 29. Industry insiders suggest that BAT has globally outsourced its service centers to Accenture, making Systems' subcontracting role a key gateway for accessing broader BPO opportunities from both BAT and Accenture. This development builds on British American Tobacco (BAT) Pakistan's previous efforts to establish a strong BPO presence in the country. Relocated from Malaysia to Pakistan in 2021, BAT's outsourcing hub had by 2024 created over 500 jobs and employed 350 professionals, delivering services to over 50 countries including Japan, UAE, and Malaysia. The operation reportedly generated $11.8 million in annual foreign exchange inflows, with revenue per employee ranging between $35,000 and $45,000. Topline Research's Sania Irfan sees long-term upside, noting that Accenture—whose global revenue exceeds $64 billion—is heavily invested in BPO services as part of its digital transformation offerings. The transaction is seen as a significant milestone for Pakistan's tech sector, further integrating it into global value chains through strategic partnerships and digital service expansion. EU wheat rises, supported by high Russian prices

PARIS/HAMBURG: European wheat edged higher on Wednesday after a big fall in the previous session, supported by strong Russian prices and concerns about Germany's wheat crop. Benchmark September milling wheat on Paris-based Euronext was up 0.4% at 1335 GMT to 197.50 euros per metric ton. 'Euronext is not rising because the funds are selling,' a trader said, pointing to high Russian prices as supportive. Russian farmers are starting to sell more of their new crop after an unusually slow start to new harvest sales, but are still demanding high prices as a large number of ships are waiting to load supplies in export ports, traders said.
