Mother of 4-year-old killed at Detroit playground calls for shooter to turn themselves in

CBS News28-06-2025
A mother is speaking out after her 4-year-old son was one of two people shot and killed in a park on Detroit's east side Friday.
Detroit police say the shooting happened early Friday evening at Skinner Playfield in the area of Morang Avenue and Duchess Street near Denby High School. An 18-year-old was also killed in the shooting, and a third person, a 17-year-old, was also injured.
Jasmine Grubbs is still in shock and disbelief after her 4-year-old son, Samir, was killed in the shooting. Grubbs brought her five children to Skinner Park on Friday, and within minutes of arriving, she says shots were fired.
"Couldn't have been here no more than five minutes, and we just started hearing shooting," Grubbs said.
Grubbs rushed her son to Henry Ford St. John Hospital, where he died.
"I pulled up to the hospital, and they took him out of my arms, and that's the last time I seen him," she said.
Grubbs says she had to break the news to her other four children Saturday morning.
"I had to sit my other kids down and explain to them that he wasn't coming home," she said. "They thought he was cause they were saying, 'Is he all right?'
Reverend WJ Rideout III, a community activist and pastor at All God's People Church in Roseville, says the community needs to do more to protect children from senseless gun violence.
"Very disheartening, very disheartening. One killing of a child is one too many. I'm just bombarded with pain and agony," he said. "We have to come together as a community and have a collaborative effort, and keeping our kids safe here in the city of Detroit, in the streets, in these parks."
Community groups and police met Saturday afternoon to canvass the area in their search for the shooter. Police had two persons of interest in custody Friday night but later released them.
Grubbs is urging the shooter to turn themselves in.
"Just turn yourself in," Grubbs said. "I know people act off impulse and they're not really thinking, but you know, now that you killed kids, I just want you to know, the best thing to do is turn yourself in."
The shooting remains under investigation.
If you have any information, you are asked to call Detroit police. If you would like to remain anonymous, you can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.

St. Paul adds safety measures to McMurray Field after driver gets onto soccer pitch

A motorist driving their car onto McMurray Field in St. Paul, Minnesota, has prompted the city to install new barriers aimed at keeping vehicles off the turf. "Its scary. It's disturbing and infuriating. People come here to recreate," said Saint Paul Parks and Recreation Director Andy Rodriguez. "It's a high-volume site for soccer, lacrosse and other things. To see something like that happen here, it's disappointing, and we had to take action on it." A video posted to social media in April showed a motorist driving onto the field during a match organized by a TikTok content creator. Witnesses said the car drove around the crowd and appeared to head right towards the group before leaving the arena No one was hurt, and no arrests have been made. The incident prompted the city to create new safety measures around the field. "We put in some new stone blocks and some fencing around the perimeter of McMurray. We heard strongly from residents and the community about the need for safety deterrents to prevent that from ever happening again," said Rodriguez. There are roughly 22 new limestone blocks, and a new fence around the perimeter of the field. The city says it will also be adding a gate. "We were fortunate enough to be able to use the local option sales tax fund to support this project to the tune of $115,000," said Rodriguez. For park visitor Eric Huynh, the new installation is a welcome addition. "They are definitely going to help. Nothing's going to move over these blocks. Definitely a deterrent for people to drive down," said Huynh. Rodriguez said that the city is continuing to assess whether similar safety measures are needed at other parks around Saint Paul.

South Carolina dance teacher arrested after questionable routine uncovers serious allegations

A South Carolina dance teacher was arrested after an investigation that began when parents raised flags about a dance routine "that conflicted with their morals." Andrea Mizell, 45, is accused of giving her students alcohol, having vulgar conversations with them, showing them sexually explicit photos of herself and touching them inappropriately during dance practice, according to a police incident report obtained by Fox News Digital. She was charged with four counts of second-degree assault and battery, four counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and three counts of disseminating harmful material to minors, according to court documents. Police in Hanahan began investigating Mizell when officers responded March 12 to reports of an argument at a dance school. Some of the parents told authorities they were morally conflicted over a dance routine being taught to their children. When Mizell reportedly set a time to meet with one concerned parent to discuss the problem, she fled in her car and drove away after seeing several parents at the school, the police report states. Mizell later told police she felt intimidated and left out of fear. When officers spoke to the children who attended the dance school, they were told Mizell had given them alcohol and was having "vulgar conversations" with them. She also allegedly invited some of them to her apartment and served them margaritas while they watched a movie. She also allegedly discussed her sex life with the students. Students told investigators Mizell had also touched them inappropriately, including "in the private parts on the butt," according to court documents reported in local media. One student allegedly told police the touching happened multiple times during dance practice and that Mizell would "go out of her way" to touch the student. Some students claimed Mizell would also change her clothes in front of them, often exposing herself. Fox News Digital has reached out to Mizell for comment.

Cyclist recovering after being hit by pickup truck in Burlington County, New Jersey: "I'm very grateful to be here"

A South Jersey cyclist is recovering after being struck by a hit-and-run driver in Burlington County. "For getting hit by a truck, it's only some bruises here, a cut here, some road rash here and on my arms," said Patrick Allen, who considers himself lucky. Allen is on the mend after suffering a concussion and other minor injuries after being hit by a pickup truck while riding his bicycle. "I don't remember the incident, I remember waking up in the hospital... I didn't know what day it was," he said. It happened on July 18 around 5:30 p.m. near the intersection of Medford Lakes and Oak Shade roads in Tabernacle, near the Medford line. The 27-year-old says he was in the bike lane at the time, training for a 160-mile bike-a-thon for cancer research. He's riding in memory of his dad. "Me and my family, we do it every year. My father had cancer, and he passed last November. So this is the first year it's going to be in his memory," Allen said. Josh Duvall lives near the intersection and raced over to help Allen, who was bleeding on the ground. "It sounded like an actual car accident," said Duvall, who helped get Allen and his bike off the road. Duvall said the driver stopped for a moment and then took off. "It was very clearly that you hit a human being on a bike and sped away, like peeled out," he said. "You could hear the tires screeching... saw the back of the vehicle." New Jersey State Police are investigating the crash. Allen is now asking homeowners in the area to review their security cameras in the hopes of finding the driver responsible. Signs are marked, alerting drivers to share the road, and several roadside memorials remind Allen it could have been much worse. "I'm very grateful to be here, truck versus bike, it usually ends one way, but I was fortunate enough to walk away from it," Allen said. Allen is still healing, but he's determined to continue his training and complete the race in two weeks in memory of his dad. Anyone with information about the crash is urged to call the New Jersey State Police.
