Snoop Dogg Joins Swansea City as New Co-Owner

The Sun18-07-2025
AMERICAN rapper and producer Snoop Dogg has become an investor with Welsh side Swansea City, the Championship club said on Thursday, with the songwriter joining Croatian midfielder Luka Modric as a co-owner.
The news comes just days after Snoop Dogg helped launch Swansea's new home jersey which had fuelled speculation that the hip-hop artist would have an even bigger involvement with the club.
'My love of football is well known, but it feels special to me that I make my move into club ownership with Swansea City,' Snoop Dogg said on the club's website.
'The story of the club and the area really struck a chord with me. This is a proud, working class city and club. An underdog that bites back, just like me.'
In April, Modric joined American investors Andy Coleman, Brett Cravatt, Nigel Morris and Jason Cohen in the Swansea ownership structure, and the club will hope that the latest investor can help boost their global standing.
Snoop Dogg may have arrived on the scene asking 'Who am I? (What's My Name?), but since then the 53-year-old has become one of the biggest names in the music world.
'Snoop's colossal global fanbase and audience will certainly help us do that,' Swansea's ownership group said.
'He has made clear to us throughout this process just how excited he is at the prospect of joining the club.
'Snoop has openly shared his love of football and his desire to be involved in the game, and we expect his involvement to support us putting as competitive a team as possible out on the field.'
Snoop Dogg and Modric join the club as they look to come through financial difficulties after they posted a pre-tax loss of 15.2 million pounds ($20.39 million) in the latest financial year.
Swansea will be joined in English football's second tier next season by fellow Welsh club Wrexham, who have risen from the doldrums of the National League under the ownership of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.
Wrexham have risen to prominence under their Hollywood owners, and their Welcome to Wrexham TV series has brought them to a global audience, and perhaps Swansea may consider making a 'Doggumentary' of their own. ($1 = 0.7455 pounds)- REUTERS

Crawley, Duckett lead England recovery after Pant's Old Trafford heroics

MANCHESTER: A superb 166-run opening partnership between Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett led England's recovery in the fourth test against India, the hosts closing day two on 225-2, trailing the tourists by 133 runs. A gutsy half century from the injured Rishabh Pant on Thursday helped India post 358 in their first innings, with England captain Ben Stokes' first five-wicket test haul in eight years helping see off the tourists' tail. Crawley and Duckett moved at a rapid rate before tea to eat into India's total as England's reply got underway, but neither could convert their impressive starts into centuries, the pair falling for 84 and 94 respectively in the evening session. Joe Root and Ollie Pope survived several close calls to see England through to the close, putting the hosts in with a chance of sealing victory in the five-match series with one test to spare. "The boys are happy to be in a good position as a team, we bowled really well this morning," Crawley told reporters. "I have high standards and I always want more from myself, that has certainly been the case in the last year or so. Days like today make the tougher times worth it more." Resuming the day on 264-4, Pant appeared in the India dressing room in his whites after retiring hurt on Wednesday trying an audacious reverse scoop shot when on 37, before heading to hospital for scans. After England fast bowler Archer removed Ravindra Jadeja for 20 early under grey Manchester skies, and Shardul Thakur (41) followed him back to the pavilion, Pant received a standing ovation as he surprisingly limped down the steps and onto the field. Running between the wickets was difficult, but Pant, effectively on one leg, steered the tourists through to lunch on 321-6. As play restarted, the battling Pant pulled out the big shots. He slogged Archer for six before moving past fifty, his 18th in test cricket, with another boundary. After Stokes had removed Washington Sundar and debutant Anshul Kamboj, Archer ended Pant's resistance by sending the injured wicket-keeper's off stump flying for 54. Pant has now amassed the most runs by a wicketkeeper in a series on English soil. "He was in a lot of pain," Thakur told reporters. "But we have seen him do amazing things. "Today was just another amazing thing he did for this team. A lot was happening with the ball, so getting the amount of runs we did was not easy." Duckett continued where Pant left off when England came to the crease in reply, scoring at over a run a ball as he reached his 15th test fifty in the evening sunshine. Crawley quickly followed, his 23rd score of fifty or more helping England's opening pair pass their century partnership for the fifth time as a duo. The partnership was ended at 166 as Crawley was caught in the slips by KL Rahul having achieved his highest ever test score against India. Duckett did not last much longer, Kamboj snaring his maiden test wicket, to leave the batsman six short of a ton. Pope offered up several catchable chances, with Root surviving two loud lbw appeals.

Cleo Laine, British jazz singer who performed with Ray Charles and Frank Sinatra, dies at 97

LONDON, 2025 -British jazz singer Cleo Laine, who performed with musical greats including Frank Sinatra and starred as an actor in London's West End and on Broadway, has died aged 97, the Guardian newspaper reported on Friday, citing a statement from her children Jacqui and Alec. Born to an English mother and a Jamaican father in a suburb of London in 1927, she initially worked as a hair-dresser, a hat-trimmer and a librarian. She married in 1946 and had a son while still a teenager. Driven on by her dream of becoming a singer, she divorced and got her big break in 1951, when she joined the band of English saxophonist and clarinettist John Dankworth at 24. Dankworth's band decided her name was too long - at the time she thought she had been born Clementine Campbell, though a passport application later revealed her mother had used her own surname Hitching on the birth certificate. The men of the Dankworth Seven band thought her name was too cumbersome for a poster, and that her nickname Clem was too cowboy-like. They settled on a new stage persona for her by drawing "Cleo" and "Laine" from hats. In 1958, she and Dankworth married. Their home became a magnet for London's jazz set: friends included stars from across the Atlantic such as Oscar Peterson and Ella Fitzgerald, Lester Young and Dizzy Gillespie. After acting as well as singing in Britain through the 1960s, Laine toured Australia in 1972 and performed at New York's Lincoln Centre. The recording of a further show, at Carnegie Hall, won her a Grammy. Recordings included "Porgy and Bess" with Ray Charles. In 1992 she appeared with Frank Sinatra for a series of shows at the Royal Albert Hall in London, but she was best known for her work with Dankworth's bands. He later became her musical director. The couple built their own auditorium in the grounds of their home near London and were friends with the late Princess Margaret, the sister of the late Queen Elizabeth II. Their two children went on to become musicians. Dankworth - who Laine described as being "joined at the hip" with her - died in 2010. Hours after his death, Laine performed a scheduled show in their auditorium, announcing the news about her husband only at the end of the concert. (Editing by Andrew Heavens and Olivier Holmey)

Isak considers Newcastle exit

LONDON: Alexander Isak has reportedly told Newcastle he wants to explore a move away as the club confirmed he was not part of the squad travelling to Asia for pre-season friendlies. The Daily Mail said on Thursday that Newcastle bosses "are aware of Isak's wish to consider his options this summer." It came hours after the Saudi-owned Premier League club said the 25-year-old forward would miss the Asia tour "with a minor thigh injury." Isak's 23 Premier League goals last season made him one of the world's hottest properties and he has been linked with English champions Liverpool. The Mail said Liverpool were still interested in acquiring the Sweden international despite announcing the signing of Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike on Wednesday. Ekitike's arrival, for a reported initial fee of £69 million (RM391 million), takes Liverpool's spending during the current transfer window to more than £250 million. Isak still has three years left on his contract at Newcastle, whom he joined in 2022 from Spanish side Real Sociedad. He was left out of Saturday's 4-0 defeat in a friendly at Celtic. But Newcastle boss Eddie Howe said at the time he was "confident" that Isak would stay at St James' Park, adding that he expected him to be part of the Asia tour. "It's difficult for me to give 100 per cent clarity on any player," he said. "I'd never sit here and do that because it's football and you never know what could happen. "All I can say is that Alex is happy at Newcastle. He loves the players that he plays with, the staff, the team." Newcastle face Arsenal in Singapore on Sunday before flying to South Korea, where they will play a K League all-star team and Tottenham. - AFP
