Porsche heir faces backlash over £8.5m private tunnel to Austrian villa

Telegraph21-04-2025
The heir to Porsche, the luxury car maker, has triggered a class war in the Austrian city of Salzburg after he announced plans to build an underground tunnel through a mountain to reach his stately home.
Salzburg council is set to rule on 81-year-old Wolfgang Porsche's right to dig a tunnel, reminiscent of a James Bond villain's lair, to reach his 17th-century villa and its vast garage.
The small city's former mayor approved the project in 2024, but its current, Left-leaning mayor has opposed the move.
It has led to a dispute between politicians and the public, who say Mr Porsche was granted swift permission for his €10 million (£8.5 million) project while city renovation projects have had to wait years.
In one recent act of protest to coincide with Easter, activists hosted a three-day theatre festival titled 'The Tunnel of Mr P – a grotesque piece in three acts'.
'We cannot afford the overly wealthy like Porsche anymore,' the group says. 'No luxury for the few at the cost of others.'
The upset in the baroque city, where Mozart was born and the Sound of Music was filmed, follows Mr Porsche's purchase of the villa for $9 million in 2020.
The home was famously that of the celebrated Jewish author Stefan Zweig, who used it to entertain his eminent contemporaries, including James Joyce and Thomas Mann.
Zweig loved his 'charming and impractical' home, as he called it, so much that he wanted it to be 'inaccessible by car'.
Mr Porsche, who is chairman of the car company, appears not to share this sentiment. Last year, he paid the then conservative-led council €35,000 for planning permission.
Opponents of the project say the sum he paid was too low, while others reject it on the grounds it appears to give privileged access to the wealthy.
One banner left behind by activists on the Kapuzinerberg mountain, had a reference to the opening passages of the bible: 'and Porsche said, let there be a hole'.
Ingeborg Haller, leader of the Green Party group on the town council and an opponent of the plans, told the Wall Street Journal: 'I think what amazes people is that a private individual can dig into the mountain.'
'We reject special treatment for the super rich,' she said.
The Social Democrats will make up the deciding vote on a council, which is divided on the issue after the Austrian communist party won a record result in last year's elections. To make the politics more complicated, the mayor used to be on the labour board of Porsche holding company and may abstain from voting to avoid a possible conflict of interest.
To keep the peace, Porsche has suggested partially opening his villa to the public as well as allowing wealthy neighbours in the villa-quarter to use his tunnel.

Vacuum packed show with jokes, crackling dialogue and tenderness

Erica Bitton is one helluva actor; she's appeared in a theatre production of Medea with Annette Bening, and served her time in California rep theatre. Her performance in this show – an imagined pitch to a big budget TV producer – is whip-smart funny, nimble and heartbreaking. In fact she's well on the way to how Michael Caine describes himself: a 'skilled professional actor'. (The rest of his quote isn't so inspiring: 'whether I have any talent is beside the point...') Bitton, as Jane, is on the phone to her Dad. He's 'pissed' (a US term we should adopt for brevity) about her parking tickets... and the story fills out, of an ambitious New Yorker actor pulling down restaurant shifts to live. You really do see the scenarios she rips through as a producer might; the scenes appear on your mind's screen, the dialogue crackling and the jokes and tenderness prompting real laughter, or sympathy for her unrequited love of a co-worker, Harry (just after they seem to be about to kiss; he goes home with Brook). Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Jane's father urges her to find a 'good Jewish husband'; Harry is a 'white gentile man'. That somewhat cliched storyline is less impressive than the skill with which Bitton delivers her material. More effective is her take on another staple of low-paid women's work, sexual harassment, from sleazy customers. The mantra: 'A man braces her for his passing by grazing her lower back' is repeated over and over, to get the message across that despite 'Me Too' played out by a million Harvey Weinsteins in the same city, it's still a sordid fact of working life. Our daily Edinburgh Festivals feature is delivered in partnership with Fired Dough, handmade, Neapolitan-style pizza. Find out more at Bitton and producer Meghan Dineen present a technically accomplished set with lighting and sound effects, that cements the strong screen sense of the story. I'm not that taken by the story; it might have been lifted from almost any rags-to-riches Broadway tale. But what's indisputable about the show is that it showcases a superb show-woman, who can act the arse off Michael Caine. Taylor Swift new album Easter eggs from specific letter and key colour to door

Taylor Swift announced her 12th studio album, The Life Of A Showgirl, on October 12, but it turns out the news was hiding right under our noses this entire time The unstoppable pop sensation Taylor Swift confirmed the release of yet another album, The Life Of A Showgirl, on October 12, leaving devotees in complete meltdown – but it appears the announcement was concealed right beneath our very eyes this whole time. ‌ If being a Swiftie signifies anything, it requires perpetually deciphering mysterious clues because this artist certainly doesn't approach matters lightly. ‌ With every launch, whether that involves a music video, an album, or a tour, Taylor Swift delights in concealing enigmatic hints, suggesting possible song titles, themes, collaborations and beyond. ‌ As it happens, the clues were lurking right beneath our very noses. Outlining her motivations for steering her extraordinary career in this manner, Swift previously revealed to the Washington Post: "When I was 15 and putting together my first album... I decided to encode the lyrics with hidden messages using capital letters. That's how it started, and my fans and I have since descended into colour coding, numerology, word searches, elaborate hints, and Easter eggs.", reports t he Mirror US. ‌ "It's really about turning new music into an event for my fans and trying to entertain them in playful, mischievous, clever ways. As long as they still find it fun and exciting, I'll keep doing it." The colour orange The colour orange With her latest release, Taylor Swift has introduced a fresh colour to her musical universe. Each of her albums has been associated with a specific colour, which helped distinguish them during her Eras Tour performances. However, the one colour we haven't seen yet is orange – the central hue of The Life Of A Showgirl. ‌ Swifties may have overlooked that orange was subtly hinted at throughout various elements. During the start of the Eras Tour, there were only a few instances where Taylor donned the colour orange, including a surprise acoustic performance with Sabrina Carpenter. This has led fans to speculate about a potential collaboration with the pop singer on the new album. ‌ One of the visuals displayed on the big screen during the Eras Tour, known as the Lover House, showcased a house with different rooms – each room illuminated with the distinct colours of each era. Towards the tour's conclusion, an orange door began to emerge, symbolising an unseen colour and a possible new album. On the final night of her 149-night tour, she seemed to step through that very orange door – now understood as a metaphor for her transition into a new era, The Life of A Showgirl. Very specific number The number 12 also plays a significant role in The Life Of A Showgirl. As her 12th studio album, it was announced on August 12, and there were numerous subtle hints pointing towards this. ‌ After all, if there's one thing we know about Miss Swift, nothing is ever left to chance. It was precisely 12 weeks ago that the pop sensation revealed she had finally acquired the masters to her entire catalogue. ‌ In her announcement, she kicked off by writing "hiiiiiiiiiiii" with exactly 12 'i's - because why wouldn't she? Fuelling the speculation further, she shared a clip on social media last October at Hard Rock Stadium, positioned in front of an 'A12' sign. Eagle-eyed supporters were swift to clock this detail, well aware of Taylor's penchant for numerical games, interpreting it as a clue that 'album 12' was approaching. ‌ Showgirl themes Taylor appears to have been flirting with 'showgirl' concepts for quite some time, evident even during her 2022 Midnights era. In the 'Bejewelled' music video, she performed alongside burlesque legend Dita Von Teese whilst donning a feathered ensemble beneath a glittering amber spotlight. Might this have been an early teaser? ‌ Then there's her most theatrical showgirl moment during the Eras Tour's rendition of 'I Can Do It With A Broken Heart' from her latest offering, The Tortured Poets Department. The routine features her portraying an exhausted entertainment industry figure before her backing dancers, clad in formal suits and top hats, transform her into the sparkling pop icon we recognise her to be. As anticipation mounts for her 12th studio album, and fans delve into its concealed intricacies, the excitement is palpable as they decipher the clues left by Taylor Swift. Who knows what's next? If it's anything like her past releases, there's bound to be more surprises in store.

Car repair finance firm lands Bumper funding round from auto giants

A buy now, pay later specialist which helps motorists spread the cost of repairing their cars has landed millions of pounds from the venture arms of Jaguar Land Rover, Porsche and other leading automotive groups. Sky News understands that Bumper, which is based in London and Sheffield, will announce later this week that it has raised $11m (£8.1m) in an extension to its Series B funding round. Founded in 2013 by James Jackson and Jack Allman, Bumper's latest capital injection is also backed by Suzuki Ventures and Shell Ventures. The round was led by Autotech Ventures. The company, which has seen the number of motorists it assists soar in the past year, helps drivers split repair bills into BNPL interest-free instalments, and says it is now "operationally profitable". It has expanded to Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands and Spain, and is also diversifying into other payment and software services through what it describes as "a targeted M&A strategy". "A sudden repair bill can hit families hard," said Mr Jackson, Bumper's chief executive. "We created Bumper to give people control, flexibility and peace of mind when the unexpected happens. "Over 1.5 million drivers have now used our platform to keep their cars on the road without breaking the bank." Bumper is available as a financing option in more than 5,000 dealerships and garages, and counts car-makers including Audi, Ford, JLR, Nissan and Volkswagen among those with which it works. Last October, the company acquired AutoBI, a business intelligence platform for car retailers and OEMs (original equipment manufacturers). More recently, it bought Cocoon Payments, a white-label solution which helps dealerships streamline digital payment processes. "We're building out from our consumer BNPL roots into a full-stack platform for automotive retail," Mr Jackson said. "By owning more of the payments stack and delivering software solutions to dealers, we can improve margins, simplify operations and support the future of mobility retail." The valuation at which Bumper's new funding had been raised was unclear on Wednesday.
