UK, India likely to unveil trade deal next week, including whisky, EVs, textiles, sources say

Reuters18-07-2025
NEW DELHI/LONDON, July 18 (Reuters) - India and Britain are expected to seal a long-awaited free trade deal next week, two Indian government sources said, granting Indian textiles and electric vehicles some duty-free access to the UK market and easing British exports of whisky, cars and food.
In May, both countries announced the conclusion of trade negotiations after three years of stop-start negotiations, aiming to increase bilateral trade, remove trade barriers and allow duty-free entry of goods.
The countries are now preparing to formally sign the agreement, and the announcement could coincide with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's expected visit to London next week, one of the Indian officials said.
The trade pact will take effect in about a year, after it is approved by the British parliament and India's federal cabinet, the official added.
Officials spoke on the condition of anonymity as the details are not public.
"The trade agreement offers a win-win for both countries," the second Indian source said, adding that Indian consumers would gain access to Scotch whisky at lower prices, as import tariffs will drop to 75% from 150% immediately, and further to 40% over the next decade.
On cars, India will cut duties to 10% from 100% under a quota system that will be gradually liberalised, the sources said. In return, Indian manufacturers are expected to gain access to the UK market for electric and hybrid vehicles, also under a quota regime, they added.
India's commerce ministry did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment. Britain's trade ministry said that the countries were working to finalise the deal.
"We have been working with India on a landmark trade deal that will deliver for British people and business," a UK government spokesperson said.
India's trade ministry has said 99% of Indian exports to Britain would benefit from zero duty under the deal, including textiles, while Britain will see reductions on 90% of its tariff lines.
An Indian trade delegation is separately holding talks in Washington, for a potential trade deal with the U.S. as President Donald Trump ramps up his trade war with the threat of sharply higher tariffs from August 1.
By 2030, India's middle class is projected to reach 60 million people and could rise to a quarter of a billion by 2050, according to British government estimates. India's overall import demand is forecast to grow by 144% in real terms to 1.4 trillion pounds ($1.88 trillion) by 2035, compared to 2021.

Sarina Wiegman urges more investment in women's game at Downing Street reception

England head coach Sarina Wiegman called for further investment in women's football to ensure the country remains a 'trailblazer' as her side celebrated their Euro 2025 success at a 'very, very special' reception at 10 Downing Street. After successfully defending their European crown with a penalty shoot-out victory over Spain in the tournament's showpiece in Basel on Sunday evening, the England team flew home to attend a reception hosted by Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner and sports minister Stephanie Peacock. The team arrived just before 7pm, with Number 10 decorated for the occasion with St George's flags draped over windows and bunting along the railings. As Wiegman rose to speak to those gathered in the Downing Street garden she joked that 'this is different from standing next to a pitch'. She added: 'I have to make my apologies (for giving) you lots of heart attacks. You all made it through and we made it through and that's why we're here now. 'The team is just incredible, we won the Euros but making the final, we're already legendary, what the team has done and the team behind the team. 'Thank you so much for having us here. It's very, very special to be here and to be in this very nice garden with the way you set it up with all these pictures, it makes it more special, it's the first moment it sinks in a little bit because it was surreal what happened last night.' Wiegman then used the moment to call for further investment in the women's game, with the Government due to announce a new package of measures to boost access to grassroots football. 'This incredible team won the Euros and then straightaway sent a letter to you, the Government, asking for attention and asking for access to football for all girls,' Wiegman said. 'Steps have been taken but we're not done yet, we have to keep moving forward and we need a little bit more. 'I heard we need to change some things about taxes…I think we have that confirmation tonight. So let's move forward. 'We need some more investment. We're not there yet. In England we're up there but England needs to stay the trailblazer, it needs to be the big example. The players first but also the FA, the clubs, the Government, the country, the fans – let's keep being the trailblazers.' In her own speech, Rayner congratulated Wiegman's team on defending their title 'with grit, with determination and with skill'. 'You roared, and I know I wasn't the only one roaring with you,' Rayner said. Chloe Kelly scored the decisive penalty for England in the shoot-out after goalkeeper Hannah Hampton made two outstanding saves. The game had gone to extra time and spot-kicks after Alessia Russo cancelled out the opener from Arsenal team-mate Mariona Caldentey as it finished 1-1 following extra time. After almost a month of competition in Switzerland, the team's plane branded with the word 'home' touched down at Southend Airport on Monday afternoon. In a post on X, the team shared a photo of the Euros trophy draped in an England flag on a seat on the plane. Holding the trophy, captain Leah Williamson was first to step off the plane alongside Wiegman. Outside the airport, crowds were lined up to welcome the team and the trophy back home. A homecoming open-top bus parade follows in central London on Tuesday, where there will be a procession along The Mall and the celebration will finish with a staged ceremony at the Queen Victoria Memorial in front of Buckingham Palace. A trip to the Palace or Windsor Castle may be on the cards for the winning squad as it is understood possible plans for a reception in the autumn are being explored by royal aides. Defender Jess Carter has not joined her team-mates for the celebrations in London as she has returned to the United States ahead of Gotham FC's NWSL match against the Chicago Stars on Saturday.

DWP minister gives update on ‘bank spying' plans which will hit millions

More details have been given on the Department for Work and Pension's (DWP) planned 'bank spying' bill ahead of its laws coming into effect later this year. Labour's new Fraud, Error and Debt Bill is currently making its way through parliament. It forms a central part of DWP plans to crackdown on benefit fraud, with new powers for the department to request information from claimants' bank accounts. Currently being debated in the House of Lords, more details on how these powers will work have been revealed by Baroness Maeve Sherlock, a minster of state for the DWP. The key power that will enable to DWP to request banks to share financial information with its agents is called the Eligibility Verification Measure. It means that when a new Eligibility Verification Notice is sent to a bank or financial institution, it must comply with the request. Baroness Sherlock outlines that the information the institution can be asked to share includes information about the account holder, including their name and date of birth. Agents can also ask for the bank account's sort code and account number, as well as details about how the account meets eligibility. Ministers say the government is introducing these powers to be able to determine if an individual is eligible for a benefit they are claiming or have applied for based on their financial position. For example, holding over £16,000 in savings generally will render someone ineligible for Universal Credit, except in certain limited circumstances. The measures will be implemented over 12 months in a 'phased approach,' working with a smaller number of banks initially, the Baroness Sherlock added. The Lords peer also addressed controversial new powers the DWP will be gaining to directly deduct money from an individual's earnings or bank accounts using a 'Direct Deduction Order'. Based on its usage by HMRC and the Child Maintenance Service – both of which already can use the power – Baroness Sherlock says DWP estimates it will make between 5,000 and 20,000 Direct Deduction Orders every year. The new powers have been introduced as part of a raft of measures Labour say will form the 'biggest fraud crackdown in a generation.' The party adds that, combined, the plans will save £1.5 billion over the next five years. But campaigners have criticised the measures as 'intrusive,' with civil liberties watchdog Big Brother Watch warning it 'threatens to usher in an unprecedented system of mass financial surveillance.' The DWP has been approached for comment.

Keir Starmer should take Donald Trump's message on board and get tough to make Britain great again

Get tough, PM DONALD Trump has run rings around the EU — and in the process shown the folly of the Remainiacs who tried to defy Brexit. Terrified of the President, the Eurocrats have been utterly humiliated in trade talks. In a deal described by French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou as 'submission', the EU accepted punishing 15 per cent tariffs on goods. It agreed to plough billions of investment into America. Brussels also ripped up its various green pledges in order to import $750billion of US gas. Meanwhile, Britain has been free to do its own deal with Trump, resulting in much lower tariffs. Sir Keir Starmer — who spent years trying to wreck the chances of a Brexit deal — now benefits from the UK being free of the dead hand of the EU Commission. There's a lesson here for the PM that he failed to grasp during negotiations for his recent 'reset' with the EU, which has ended with us once again taking rules from Europe while selling out our fishing fleet. That under pressure the EU WILL crack and give way. That cutting taxes and curbing immigration is the only way to make Britain great again. In other words, get tough, PM. Rot's up, doc OF the many mistakes Labour has made in its first year in power, will handing militant doctors a 22 per cent pay rise last year prove to be among the worst? Awkward moment Trump blasts 'nasty' Sadiq Khan for 'terrible job'… before Starmer interrupts: 'He's a friend of mine!' Didn't it dawn on ministers that all it would achieve would be another absurd pay claim from the Marxist BMA this year? This time it is a huge 29 per cent. Now patients who already receive a terrible service are in for a summer and autumn of chaos as nurses and millions of other NHS workers threaten multiple strikes, too. Proud of you CHLOE Kelly — born and raised on a London council estate and now a global superstar — spoke for a nation after lifting the Euro 2025 trophy when she declared she was proud to be English. Her teammates will also take their tournament mantra of being ' Proper England ' into today's triumphant trophy parade. After decades of being made to feel embarrassed about being English, it feels good for us to be able to celebrate unashamedly. Thank you, Lionesses.
