NBA insider Shams Charania reported on Monday that Tom Thibodeau "has a lot going for him" in terms of returning as the team's head coach next season.

As it turns out, Charania was way off on that one.
News hit on Tuesday that the Knicks had decided to fire Thibodeau following New York's heartbreaking Eastern Conference finals loss to the Indiana Pacers. The Knicks will now need to find a successor to the veteran shot-caller, who parts ways with the team after five memorable seasons.
ESPN analyst and Knicks fan Stephen A. Smith has chimed in on the hot topic of the day. The renowned broadcaster decided to float a theory surrounding Giannis Antetokounmpo--who has already been linked to a potential blockbuster trade to the Knicks--and the Milwaukee Bucks superstar's potential role in the Thibodeau decision.
"I would hope that one of the other reasons this change is being made is because you got a superstar like Giannis Antetokounmpo that wants to come to New York," Smith said. "And he would have desired changes, and he might have articulated that.

"That's just wishful fantasy kind of thinking on my part. I have no evidence of that whatsoever. I'm just throwing that in the mix."
Smith made it clear, though, that this is nothing more than speculation from his end and that he has no factual basis behind the theory--at least not yet.

The ESPN sports analyst then turned his attention to the Knicks' roster and how Thibodeau might not be the best man for the job in terms of coaching the squad's current lineup.
"Maybe that's a good enough reason for you to go in a different direction from Tom Thibodeau because we need a different kind of coach, a coach with a different style," Smith continued.

"Maybe the players articulated that, 'You know what, we want to hear a new voice as well because we're tired of playing for Thibs.' We don't know definitively whether or not that was the case, but I can tell you in my experience covering the NBA, that's definitely plausible."

Smith ended his lengthy monologue by demanding to hear from team president Leon Rose as to why the team decided to go in this direction with regard to Thibodeau.
"Still and all, Leon Rose needs to stand before the media and answer them damn questions for the public because the public has a right to know," Smith said.

Caitlin Clark Sends Clear Message Before Chicago Sky Game

Caitlin Clark Sends Clear Message Before Chicago Sky Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Indiana Fever's star player, Caitlin Clark, has been out for almost two weeks. But although she hasn't been able to play games during this time, she still finds ways to support her team off the court. Advertisement The Iowa alum sustained a left quadriceps strain during a game against the New York Liberty on May 24. The team announced on May 26 that she would be sidelined for a minimum of two weeks, with her status to be re-evaluated thereafter. So far, Clark has missed three consecutive games, including the Fever's recent 85–75 victory over the Washington Mystics in the Commissioner's Cup. While the team has managed to secure a win without her, her absence has been felt. Reports indicate a significant drop in betting interest on Fever games, highlighting her impact on fan engagement. Despite not playing on the court, the 23-year-old athlete has remained actively involved with the team during her recovery, providing vocal support from the sidelines and maintaining a leadership presence. Advertisement "You still got to be that consistent voice when sitting on the bench. I try to do that as much as I can for them," Clark said. "Just trying to be there for them has been my focus, and that can kinda distracts you from not playing, when you just focus on your teammates and how I can serve them and help them." She also confirmed that her injury happened during the game against the Liberty, but couldn't pinpoint when it happened. Before her injury, Clark was averaging 19.0 points, 9.3 assists, and 6.0 rebounds per game over four games in the 2025 WNBA season. She is expected to miss the upcoming game against the Chicago Sky on Saturday, with a potential return targeted for Tuesday against the Atlanta Dream. Troubled WNBA Team Gets Bad News on Friday

Troubled WNBA Team Gets Bad News on Friday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. WNBA fans have been treated to two games on the docket on Friday night. The Paige Bueckers-less Dallas Wings host the Los Angeles Sparks in a late 9:30 pm ET tip-off, which is preceded by a matchup between the Atlanta Dream and the Connecticut Sun at Mohegan Sun Arena. Advertisement In the first game of the evening, the Sun are looking to secure just their second win in what has been a troubling start to the season. Connecticut entered Friday's matchup against Brittney Griner and Co. with a 1-6 record and in dire need of a victory. Unfortunately for the Sun, they got some bad news in the first half of the game. This came in the form of starting center Olivia Nelson-Ododa suffering a concerning ankle injury. It was later revealed that the 24-year-old would not be able to return to the game due to the ankle issue. Connecticut Sun forward Olivia Nelson-Ododa (10) looks to shootMatt Krohn-Imagn Images The Sun have yet to provide the details of Nelson-Ododa's injury as well as whether she will be forced to miss time because of the same. However, the fact that the former UCOnn star was quickly ruled out from returning to Friday's game does not exactly bode well for her status moving forward. Advertisement Nelson-Ododa is not exactly a superstar, but she has been integral to the Sky's rotation this season. In seven starts prior to Friday night, the 6-foot-5 center has averaged 9.6 points and 6.4 rebounds in 24.1 minutes per game. Rookie Kariata Diaby got the nod to start the second half for Connecticut in Nelson-Odada's place, and this unwanted turn of events could mean more playing time for the undrafted rookie. Blockbuster NBA Trade Idea Has Hawks Swap Trae Young for Three Former Lottery Picks

Blockbuster NBA Trade Idea Has Hawks Swap Trae Young for Three Former Lottery Picks originally appeared on Athlon Sports. There could be a change for the Atlanta Hawks this offseason after missing the NBA playoffs for the second straight year. The Hawks haven't been competitive, despite having Trae Young, the league's leader in assists per game. With the lack of a competent roster, it could be time for Atlanta to trade Young. Advertisement Last season, the Hawks had a 40-42 record and lost in the Play-In Tournament. The organization hasn't been in the conversation of being a playoff team for a while. Bleacher Report's Andy Bailey suggested that it's time for the Hawks to consider trading the All-Star guard. Given that the front office hasn't been able to give Young enough help to contend, Bailey suggested that a fresh start with a different franchise could be the next step. Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young is guarded by Orlando Magic center Wendell Carter Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images According to Bailey, the team that would benefit from Young would be the Orlando Magic. In the postseason, it became clear that the Magic need a point guard who's capable of being an elite floor general. Advertisement The blockbuster trade idea would send Young to the Magic in exchange for Jalen Suggs, Anthony Black, Jett Howard and a top-10-protected 2027 first-round pick. Acquiring the three former lottery picks could be the perfect fit for what Atlanta is trying to do. "The Hawks have never been able to figure out how to surround him with a workable defense that can cover for his shortcomings on that end," Bailey argued. "And they're brewing their own little positionless philosophy that could benefit from Jalen Suggs' defense and a few more on-ball opportunities for the likes of Jalen Johnson, Dyson Daniels and Zaccharie Risacher." The Hawks have a promising young core in Zaccharie Risacher and Dyson Daniels. Young is the only player who doesn't fit the Hawks' timetable. With the Hawks, Young has developed into a four-time All-Star and one of the best facilitators in the NBA. He has averaged 25.3 points, 3.5 rebounds and 9.8 assists in seven seasons.
