BTS members RM and V complete mandatory military service as K-pop group nears full reunion

NBC News19 hours ago

Two members of the K-pop sensation BTS, RM and V, completed their mandatory 18-month military service in South Korea on Tuesday, leaving their base to the roars of fans counting down for the supergroup's reunion.
Standing in their military uniforms outside a base in the northern city of Chuncheon, the duo introduced themselves with their service titles: RM, a private in the military band unit, and V, a sergeant in a special forces unit.
'To all the ARMYs who have waited for us in the military, I want to say I am truly, truly grateful,' V, 29, told reporters and fans, referring to the group's fan club of millions.
'Please wait just a little longer and we will return with a really cool performance,' he said.
RM, 30, referenced his time in the military band unit by playing a saxophone before the crowd.
'We've served the shortest military duty in history, as you know,' he said afterward.
'Still, entering this stage in life at a later age brought many tough moments,' he added.
Two other BTS members, J-Hope, 31, and Jin, 32, finished their military service last year and have been performing solo shows since. With RM and V also having wrapped up, only three BTS members remain in service: Jimin, 29, Suga, 32, and Jung Kook, 27. They are expected to be discharged later this month, according to a spokesperson for the South Korean entertainment group HYBE, which manages BTS.
'I worry a lot about the juniors still serving,' RM said. 'I hope they undergo the remaining training safely and come back to society healthy so we can meet again.'
The boy band went on hiatus in June 2022 before announcing that its members would fulfill their obligation under South Korean law that mandates all able-bodied men between the ages of 18 and 28 to serve 18 to 21 months in the military.
The oldest member of the group, Jin, enlisted in 2022, followed by J-Hope and Suga. RM, V, Jimin and Jung Kook began their service in December 2023.
South Korea, which remains technically at war with nuclear-armed North Korea, allows only a few exemptions from military service, including for those who enhance the country's prestige such as classical musicians and athletes. The members of BTS were able to postpone their service until age 30 after lawmakers revised the Military Service Act in 2020.
While legislation was introduced at the time BTS members began enlisting that could potentially exempt them, the group said its members would fulfill their military service requirement.
'Now that I'm back, I will do my best as RM of BTS and return to my place in society with style,' RM said.
V, too, promised his return.

K-pop stars Jimin and Jung Kook of BTS discharged from military service as band's reunion nears

K-pop superstars Jimin and Jung Kook are the latest and final members of BTS to be discharged from South Korea's mandatory military service. The pair wore their military uniforms Wednesday, saluted and addressed fans who had assembled to see the pair after their discharge. They enlisted in December 2023, one day after RM and V did the same. The latter were discharged on Tuesday. They saluted upon their release Tuesday in Chuncheon City as about 200 fans, some of whom traveled from Mexico, Turkey and Brazil, cheered. V thanked fans Tuesday for their patience in waiting for him and RM's return and teased the band's reunion. "If you can just wait a little bit longer, we will return with a really amazing performance.' The seven singers of the popular K-pop band plan to reunite as a group sometime in 2025 after they finish their service. Six of the group's seven members served in the army, while Suga is fulfilling his duty as a social service agent, an alternative form of military service. He will be discharged later this month. Jin, the oldest member of K-pop supergroup BTS, was discharged in June 2024. J-Hope was discharged in October. In South Korea, all able-bodied men aged 18 to 28 are required by law to perform 18-21 months of military service under a conscription system meant to deter aggression from rival North Korea. The law gives special exemptions to athletes, classical and traditional musicians, and ballet and other dancers if they have obtained top prizes in certain competitions and are assessed to have enhanced national prestige. K-pop stars and other entertainers aren't subject to such privileges. However, in 2020, BTS postponed their service until age 30 after South Korea's National Assembly revised its Military Service Act, allowing K-pop stars to delay their enlistment until age 30. There was heated public debate in 2022 over whether to offer special exemptions of mandatory military service for BTS members, until the group's management agency announced in October 2022 that all seven members would fulfill their duties. ___ Sherman reported from New York.

K-pop sensation BTS celebrates return of bandmates after military duties paused music career

Ecstatic K-pop fans have celebrated the news that BTS is one step closer to getting back together after two of its band members finished their duties in the army. RM, 30, and V, 29, began serving in December 2023 - and were discharged from mandatory military service in South Korea on June 10. The seven-member boy band temporarily disbanded in 2022, to allow each of its members to enlist. In South Korea men ages 18 to 28 must serve two years in the nation's armed forces. The country's parliament passed a bill in 2020 allowing the group to defer their service until the age of 30. The duo emerged Tuesday in Chuncheon, South Korea to about 200 fans - many of whom traveled from all over the world for the jubilant moment. Fans, who were stationed on a soccer field, held up signs and photos of the singers, taking pictures and videos as RM and V saluted their fans. RM even serenaded the onlookers with a saxophone solo. Two more of the group's seven members had already completed service. The remaining three wrap up soon. V told fans they'd only have to wait a little longer for the men to re-emerge as a unit. 'Performing is what I want to do the most,' RM told the waiting crowd. Since their hiatus, both RM and V released solo projects. RM came out with 'Indigo' in 2022 and 'Right Place, Wrong Person' in 2024. V's 'Layover' came out in 2023. The BTS 'army'- as they lovingly call their fans - is anxious for the group's reunion. Jimin and Jung Kook are set to be released from their military duties on June 11. Suga, who chose alternative service, will return June 21. Jin, the oldest member, was discharged last year. J-Hope was released in October. Representatives for the group confirmed that they have plans to reunite later in 2025, after all seven members are relinquished from their duties. Fans could not be more excited. Those that couldn't make it all the way to Asia for RM and V's resurgence, chimed in on social media, expressing their enthusiastic excitement at the long-awaited return. 'You thinks it's bad with RM and V wait till tomorrow when JK and Jimin get discharged,' wrote one fan on X. 'WE ARE SO BACK' 'Welcome back! I'm so proud of them for serving their country!' 'THEY ARE FINALLY HOME AND FREE' Some fans even documented signage throughout Seoul that read 'BTS is Back,' in celebration of the group's quickly approaching return. BTS hasn't released music together since 'Map of the Soul: 7' in 2020, which they canceled the tour for due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After five years, fans are desperate to see the group live again. And they hope that now, it's just a matter of months.
