Elon Musk's AI accused of making explicit videos of Taylor Swift, Sydney Sweeney without being prompted after enabling NSFW ‘Spicy Mode'

Indian Express19 hours ago
Elon Musk's new AI video tool, Grok Imagine, is under fire for churning out explicit fake videos of celebrities like Taylor Swift, even without being prompted for sexual content. According to a BBC report, this new feature is making 'a deliberate choice' to create NSFW clips of the singer and other stars, including Scarlett Johansson, as flagged by an online abuse researcher. The outrage exploded after The Verge tested Grok's 'spicy' mode.
'This is not misogyny by accident, it is by design,' said Clare McGlynn, a law professor working to make pornographic deepfakes illegal. The update has been slammed online, with many warning about the dangerous territory these models could lead users into if left unchecked.

Grok Imagine rolled out this week for Apple users and went viral within minutes. According to Musk, the first launch racked up around 34 million images in just 48 hours. Available through the $30 SuperGrok subscription, the tool lets users create still images from text prompts, which can then be turned into videos using four options: 'Custom,' 'Normal,' 'Fun,' and 'Spicy.'
While testing the feature, Verge's Jess Weatherbed prompted, 'Taylor Swift celebrating Coachella with the boys,' expecting harmless party shots. Grok delivered an image of the singer in a dress, standing behind a group of guys. But when she tried generating an animated video, the AI made explicit content instead. She stressed she never asked for nudity, only clicked the 'spicy' setting. 'It was shocking how fast I was met with it. I never told it to remove her clothing — all I did was select 'spicy.''

The real problem with this tool is that in countries like the UK, the law now requires platforms hosting explicit content to carry out proper age verification, and Grok didn't. All it asked for was a date of birth. No proof. No checks. That's a direct violation. Professor Clare McGlynn stressed this wasn't some random glitch. She pointed out Musk's team could have removed the feature entirely, particularly after the January 2024 incident when sexual deepfakes of the Cruel Summer singer went viral online, racking up millions of views before X finally stepped in and temporarily blocked searches for her name.
And it's not just Taylor Swift, Deadline and Gizmodo tested Grok with other stars. Scarlett Johansson, Sydney Sweeney, Jenna Ortega, Nicole Kidman, Kristen Bell, Timothée Chalamet, and even Nicolas Cage, all could be shown undressing or posing suggestively in 'spicy' mode. In some cases, attempts were blocked with a 'video moderated' message, but worked for others. Johansson, who has long warned about deepfake abuse and threatened legal action against AI companies before. Kristen Bell has spoken about her experience of being used in fake videos.

Fefka, SAMAM seek police action against Vinayakan

Kochi: Film Employees Federation of Kerala (Fefka) and Malayalam playback singers' organisation SAMAM have demanded police action against actor Vinayakan, who hurled abuses at singer K J Yesudas in a Facebook post recently. Though the award-winning actor removed the post, criticism has been widespread against him from various quarters since then. Strongly condemning Vinayakan's post, the Fefka music directors' union demanded strict legal action against him for "insulting Yesudas publicly". "Despite coming from a challenging social and economic background, Yesudas rose to become a revered figure in music. Insulting such a great artist is a disgraceful act," said a statement by the union. "Beyond film songs, Yesudas is celebrated for popularising Carnatic music. His contributions to music are invaluable, having sung in almost every Indian language. Every Malayali takes pride in Yesudas and no artist can tolerate hearing him being insulted publicly," it said. SAMAM also issued a statement against Vinayakan on Saturday. It has also approached chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan and cultural minister Saji Cherian, demanding a police case be registered against Vinayakan. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why Seniors Are Snapping Up This TV Box, We Explain! Apple sees best week since July 2020, reason is CEO Tim Cook in ...

FILE - Apple CEO Tim Cook and President Donald Trump shake hands during a tour of an Apple manufacturing plant, Nov. 20, 2019, in Austin. (AP Photo/ Evan Vucci, File) Apple's stock soared 13% this week, marking its largest weekly gain since July 2020, driven by a high-profile White House appearance byApple CEO Tim Cook alongside President Donald Trump. Yes, and also on the back of the company's robust quarterly earnings. The iPhone maker's shares climbed 4% on Friday (August 8) alone, closing at $229.35 per share, boosting Apple's market capitalization by over $400 billion to a staggering $3.4 trillion. The jump in Apple stock has been triggered by CEO Cook's visit to White House on Wednesday (August 6) this week. Tim Cook joined Trump at the White House to unveil Apple's ambitious commitment to invest $100 billion in American companies and domestically produced components over the next four years. A key focus of the announcement was Apple's plan to increase its procurement of America-made chips, a move that aligns with President Trump's push for domestic manufacturing. During the public meeting, Trump praised Apple's initiative, declaring that the company's U.S. investments would exempt it from proposed tariffs that could double the cost of imported chips. This assurance alleviated investor concerns about potential financial headwinds from Trump's trade policies, which had loomed over Apple for months. A rally for Apple led Wall Street higher on Wednesday as U.S. stocks reclaimed more of their sharp losses from last week. The S&P 500 rose 0.7%. Apple alone accounted for more than a third of the S&P 500's gain. It rose 5.1% ahead of a White House event where it announced an additional $100 billion over the next four years. During its earning call last week, Apple had cautioned that it anticipated over $1 billion in tariff-related costs for the current quarter if no exemptions were granted. The White House agreement significantly mitigates this risk, positioning Apple to maintain its profitability while strengthening its domestic supply chain. 'Apple and Tim Cook delivered a masterclass in managing uncertainty,' wrote JP Morgan analyst Samik Chatterjee in a note, as reported by CNBC. Two weeks ago, the company reported a stellar June quarter, with overall revenue surging 10% year-over-year to $94.9 billion, surpassing Wall Street expectations. iPhone sales, a cornerstone of Apple's business, grew 13% to $46.2 billion, driven by robust demand for the iPhone 15 series and expanding market share in emerging regions like India and Southeast Asia. The services segment, including Apple Music and iCloud, also contributed significantly, posting a 14% revenue increase to $24.2 billion, underscoring Apple's successful pivot toward high-margin, recurring-revenue streams. Beyond tariffs and earnings, Apple's stock rally reflects growing investor confidence in its long-term strategy. The company's focus on American manufacturing could bolster its resilience against global supply chain disruptions, while its innovation pipeline—spanning augmented reality, artificial intelligence, and health-focused wearables—continues to excite analysts. Additionally, Apple's recent expansion of its U.S. workforce, with plans to create 20,000 jobs by 2028, further aligns with national economic priorities. AI Masterclass for Students.
