Darts star Daryl Gurney ‘held back by security' in furious backstage row with Gerwyn Price

GERWYN PRICE and Daryl Gurney were involved in angry backstage scenes after their World Matchplay bust-up.
The pair ended their clash with a fiery ruckus on Monday night with the Welshman aggressively grabbing his rival's hand.

But it kicked off behind-the-scenes with Gurney having to be restrained by security as Price did his post-match interview with talkSPORT.
Damian Vlottes, from the Dutch Darts Draait Door podcast, said: 'Gurney was literally at the door with his head round the corner.
'Two security guards had to hold him back. He clearly wanted to confront Price again. He came in swearing.'
Former top player Vincent Van der Voort added: 'He was ready for a nice, friendly chat!
'He was absolutely fuming. Still insisting he did nothing wrong, that it was all on Price.
'I only spoke to Daryl afterwards. All he said was, 'I didn't do anything wrong.' He was angry, really angry. There was no calm conversation. He made it clear he's not a fan of Price.
'But I imagine Price would say the opposite. There's so much emotion involved. I don't mind it though, adds spice to the sport. As long as it doesn't turn physical, this sort of tension has its place.'
The players have history of aggro and the contest, won 10-7 by Price, became more feisty as it progressed.
Gurney was clearly winding up the Welshman with mocking gestures and facial expressions. Price responded with his typical super-loud leg-winning celebration roars.
The first flashpoint came immediately after the match concluded.
Vlottes said: 'He gave him the handshake, very firmly. I thought it was a fantastic moment to watch. Then Price said something, Gurney looked taken aback and stormed off the stage. You could see how intense it was.
'You could tell Gurney was already starting to wind things up. Constantly provoking.'
Van der Voort added: 'There was a bit of mimicking, body language… you could feel the tension rising between them.
'He was at it throughout, gesturing, little games. That's fine. But to blow up like that straight after the match… clearly a lot of bottled-up frustration. It's unfortunate, but at least we've got something to talk about now.'
Despite the incident dominating social media and on Sky Sports, Price asked not to be questioned about Gurney in the post-match press conference.
Vlottes continued: 'No questions about it were allowed. We had plenty lined up, but we were told not to ask. That wasn't the journalists, it was the PDC's decision.'
Van der Voort added: 'That's where they fall short, in my opinion. It's a shame. Sport is emotion, and this sort of thing happens in every sport.'
Price did touch on the subject, saying: 'I've learnt to try and keep my emotions in tact at key points sometimes. I did today in two or three legs where my head was going to blow off. I just had to keep it in.'
Price did later post on his Instagram story: 'Have to be careful these days I'm down to light cruiser weight.'
In amongst all the aggro, Michael van Gerwen made a light-hearted attempt to calm down the situation.
Van der Voort said: 'He came out of the players' room, he had to play next and said, 'Come on lads, calm down' in the corridor.'
It's not the first time the pair have clashed, they have had previous rows in the Premier League which started at Sheffield in 2019 and had to be separated by security on that occasion.

Rangers 2-0 Panathanaikos PLAYER RATINGS: Which player netted a 'belter'? Who kept the hosts in the tie during a frantic first half? And which new boy enjoyed a dream debut?

Russell Martin got off to a winning start in his first competitive fixture in charge of Rangers courtesy of a fine 2-0 win over Panathanaikos in the first leg of their Champions League qualifier. The visitors were denied on countless occasions by an inspired Butland in the Rangers goal, before 18-year-old Findlay Curtis produced a stunning finish from outside the area to put Martin's men in front on 52 minutes. The Greeks were reduced to 10 men shortly before the hour mark, with Georgios Vagiannidis picking up a second yellow card. Nico Raskin was twice thwarted in quick succession by Panathanaikos keeper Bartlomiej Dragowski as the hosts searched for a second. But the home support didn't have to wait long for it to arrive, with debutant Djeidi Gassama coming off the bench to double the advantage and put his side in a commanding position ahead of next Wednesday's trip to Athens. Here, Gary Keown gives his verdict on how the home players fared on a thrilling night at Ibrox. RANGERS (4-3-3) JACK BUTLAND: 9 — Made two brilliant early saves from Duricic and Palmer-Brown and a good one from Duricic in the second 45. Important show. JAMES TAVERNIER: 7 — Had some difficult moments during a torrid opener for Rangers, but settled as the game went on. JOHN SOUTTAR: 7 — Made a number of important blocks as the visitors piled on the pressure and was steady at the back overall. NASSER DJIGA: 6.5 — Almost a disaster on 53 minutes when losing possession to Duricic near goal. Recovered and did OK otherwise. MAX AARONS: 6 — Gave the ball away in too many dangerous positions in the first half, in particular, but did play a part in Gassama's goal. MOHAMED DIOMANDE: 7 — Slowly shrugged off the marking of Maksimovic as the game developed and forced one save from Dragowski. JOE ROTHWELL: 7 — A solid presence brought in to let Raskin and Diomande get forward and was steady if unspectacular. NICOLAS RASKIN: 8.5 — Grew into the game well after a sticky start. Gave Curtis the ball for his goal and was twice denied by Dragowski. KIERAN DOWELL: 6.5 — Had a real chance with a header over the bar on 64 minutes, but was pretty quiet before being replaced. DANILO: 7 — Got very little service, but worked hard and was unlucky to see a great first-half volley deflected wide by Maksimovic. FINDLAY CURTIS: 7.5 — Had a difficult first 45 and eventually made way for Dessers, but, good grief, what a belter of a goal. Substitutes: Dessers (Danilo 74), Igamane (Dowell 74), Gassama (Curtis 74), Bajrami (Rothwell 86). Not used: Kelly, Barron, Cameron, Cortes, Fernandez, Gentles, Rice, Jefte. MANAGER: Russell Martin 8 — A bold selection of Curtis on the left and one that paid off. Defence needs work, though. Booked — Raskin, Souttar, Panathanaikos (4-2-3-1): Dragowski; Vagiannidis, Palmer-Brown, Touba, Kyriakopoulos; Chirivella (Siopis 84), Maksimovic; Bakasetas (Kotsiras 62) Pellistri (Tete 84), Duricic (Swiderski 76), Ioannidis (Mancini 75). Sent off — Vagiannidis Attendance — 49, 548

England 2-1 Italy AET: Lionesses produce STUNNING comeback to book place in European Championship final thanks to dramatic Chloe Kelly strike

England booked their place in the European Championship final in stunning fashion after coming within seconds of defeat on Tuesday night. The defending champions were close to crashing out after Barbara Bonansea's first half goal after she fired high past Hannah Hampton from close range. But Michelle Agyemang scored with just seconds remaining in normal time, and it looked as though the game was heading for penalties once again. That was until Beth Mead was pulled down in the penalty area, and Chloe Kelly stepped up to take the spot kick. Her penalty was saved, but she followed in for the rebound to net the winner. Full report to follow.

England through to Women's Euros final after beating Italy in extra time

England have produced another stunning comeback to beat Italy 2-1 in extra time in the semi-finals of the Women's Euros. The Lionesses looked certain to be knocked out of the tournament as they trailed 1-0 with less than a minute left of the game. However, 19-year-old Michelle Agyemang scored a last-gap equaliser in the 96th minute to send the game into extra time. Italy had been the better team in the first 90 minutes following Barbara Bonansea's goal in the 32nd minute, but England had the momentum in extra time as they fought for a winning goal. The game was decided after England forward Beth Mead was brought down in the area in the 116th minute and the Lionesses' were awarded a penalty. Chloe Kelly had her initial spot kick saved before she followed it up to slot in the rebound. The game was arguably even more dramatic than England's quarter finals victory where they came from 2-0 down to equalise and then beat Sweden on penalties - with Agyemang equalising in the 81st minute of that tie. England, who have reached their third major final in three years, will now play the winners of Wednesday's semi-final between Spain and Germany as they seek to lift the trophy for the second time in a row on Sunday night. Whoever they play, the final at St Jakob-Park in Basel will be a repeat fixture of England finals in recent years. The Lionesses lost 1-0 to Spain in the final of the Women's World Cup in Sydney in 2023. A year earlier the Lionesses beat Germany in the final of Euro 2022 after Kelly scored an extra-time winner.
