After exchanging numbers, they began chatting on WhatsApp.
The woman initiated a video call when in the nude, during which the complainant's face was visible on the screen. Unknown to him, the call was being screen recorded. She soon began threatening to leak the recording on social media unless he paid her. Fearing humiliation, the victim transferred Rs 35,000 to an account she shared, said additional DCP (Shahdara) Deependra Kumar Singh.
When she demanded more money, the complainant alerted the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal. A police team began tracking the digital footprint. The investigation showed that the money was transferred to a bank account created in the name of Mangal Singh (31). However, the account was being operated by another accused, Shyam Singh (21).
Shyam allegedly opened the account using Mangal's documents and mobile number under the guidance of another man identified as Aamir.
Shyam was arrested on June 13.
Shyam confessed to orchestrating the fraud, obtaining SIM cards and opening bank accounts online by paying others small sums of money, a senior police officer said. "Mangal was arrested the following day and admitted that he was paid Rs 10,000 in total — Rs 6,000 online by an intermediary named Harjeet Singh, and Rs 4,000 in cash by Shyam in exchange for giving access to his account, ATM card, cheque book and SIM," the officer added.
Police have found four phones and three SIM cards. Further investigation is on.

‘Cybercrimes threat to nation's economy': Court denies bail to farmer who provided mule accounts

Mumbai: Noting the serious nature of cybercrimes and their potential to undermine the nation's economy, a sessions court denied bail to a Bikaner farmer who allegedly arranged for bank accounts to park Rs 7.2 lakh conned out of a naval staffer threatened with digital arrest last year. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The court said if released on bail, the accused, Ugraram Godara, might commit similar offences. "The advocate for the accused vehemently argued that he received only Rs 22,500 [as commission]. More than the amount, the modus operandi holds weightage," the judge said. "He (Godara) took a day's commission [from each transaction] and handed over that amount to the key accused. This is a very serious cybercrime." Godara was arrested by Mumbai police on April 8. The complainant said he received a call from a person who claimed to be a representative of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India on Dec 24, 2024, and was told that his bank account was used to launder illicit funds abroad in a case linked to a politician. The Navy staffer said he then received a video call from a person posing as a Delhi police officer, who cited a pending arrest warrant and threatened to place him under digital arrest. The impersonator said the warrant could be cancelled if he transferred certain sums of money to specific bank accounts. The complainant complied and eventually transferred Rs 7.2 lakh in all. The prosecution alleged Godara provided mule bank accounts for commissions. As per the alleged modus operandi, another fraudster would contact targets and direct them to transfer money into these accounts. It was claimed Godara's driver, Shyamsunder Rahar, withdrew money from different ATMs, took his cut and handed the rest to him. The prosecution said Godara has been named in other cybercrime cases too. Godara's advocate said he was arrested merely on suspicion, adding that he has a young daughter, his wife has died, and his elderly father is dependent on him.

Pvt firm manager accused of siphoning off over Rs 2 cr company funds

Hyderabad: A senior manager of DigiTele Networks Pvt Ltd, an IT and drone services provider associated with Greenko Group, has been accused of siphoning off more than Rs 2 crore by routing projects through two private companies he secretly controlled. A case has been registered by the Central Crime Station (CCS) following a complaint by the company. In his complaint, the company's authorised signatory, Venkata Thota accused Madan V Golagabathula of conspiring with select Greenko officials and outside clients to defraud the company. Madan had joined DigiTele in Dec 2014 and handled business development, billing, and recruitment. "Madan secretly incorporated 9th Pixel Geosoft (OPC), exercising full control over its operations and finances. As part of his conspiracy, he also brought in another entity, Atree Solutions, owned by Chandra Murali. By misleading Greenko officials and misrepresenting 9th Pixel and Atree Solutions as associates of DigiTele, Madan secured contracts for these entities while utilising DigiTele and Greenko's employees and resources to execute the work. Invoices were raised in the names of his personal companies while payments were misappropriated, resulting in significant financial losses to DigiTele and Greenko," the complainant alleged. Between April 2022 and Jan 2025, 9th Pixel booked revenue of about Rs 2 crore, while Atree Solutions earned nearly Rs 28 lakh from Sept 2023 to June 2024, as per the complaint. "Both firms had no staff or equipment. DigiTele and Greenko employees executed the work while invoices were raised at inflated rates," the complaint reads. Investigators uncovered alleged kickbacks worth Rs 48 lakh paid to 10 DigiTele and Greenko employees to suppress the irregularities. A further 50 recruits were placed on DigiTele rolls without approval, the complainant said. Based on the complaint, CCS registered a case against Madan, Chandra Murali and others under sections 316(4) (criminal breach of trust by clerk or servant), 318(4) (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 336(3) (forgery for purpose of cheating), and 340(2) (using as genuine a forged document or electronic record) read with 61(2) (criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
