Yankees claim outfielder from Braves, put Giancarlo Stanton on 60-day IL
The New York Yankees added a potentially interesting bat during Thursday's off day.
The team claimed outfielder Bryan de la Cruz off waivers from the Atlanta Braves and optioned him to Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes/Barre.
The Yankees also put Giancarlo Stanton (double tennis elbows) on the 60-day injured list to make room for Cruz on the 40-man roster. The earliest Stanton could return is May 24.
De la Cruz, 28, has shown pop in the majors, hitting 19 homers in 2023 and 21 in 2024. The Yankees don't need a starting outfielder immediately, but they might have been looking for a right-handed complement to Jasson Domínguez in left field.
Earlier today, the Yankees claimed OF Bryan de la Cruz off waivers from the Atlanta Braves and optioned him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Yankees have transferred DH/OF Giancarlo Stanton to the 60-day injured list.

Domínguez, a 22-year-old switch-hitting rookie, has been excellent from the left side (.872 OPS, 63 plate appearances) and terrible from the right side (.391 OPS, 41 plate appearances). A righty hitter, de la Cruz has a career .311 on-base percentage and .697 OPS vs. lefties in the majors.
Teams have spent the season trying to exploit the Yankees' lefty-heavy lineup. Their 228 plate appearances against lefty relievers are the most in the majors, well ahead of the second-place Chicago Cubs at 191.

It was unclear if de la Cruz would remain minor-league depth for the Yankees, who have mostly been playing Everson Pereira in left field at Triple A. Second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. was expected to have an MRI on Thursday on the right oblique he injured as the Yankees faced the Baltimore Orioles on the road this week. If Chisholm must go on the injured list, the Yankees could add de la Cruz in his place.
The move didn't mean much for Stanton's timeline. The Yankees have not yet said when he might begin a rehabilitation assignment, though he's recently been hitting against a high-velocity pitching machine and performing light running workouts.
The Braves had demoted de la Cruz to Triple A when they called up ex-Yankee Alex Verdugo on April 17.

Rams named potential landing spot for recently-released star CB
Rams named potential landing spot for recently-released star CB The Los Angeles Rams didn't make many changes to their secondary and could be looking to add a veteran ahead of the 2025 NFL season. While most eyes are on the Miami Dolphins and one-time ex-Rams star Jalen Ramsey, there is another name out there who could be on the Rams' radar: Jaire Alexander. The Green Bay Packers recently released the two-time Pro Bowler after seven seasons when they couldn't find a trade partner or agree to a new contract. In the wake of this news, Pro Football Focus' Trevor Sikkema named the Rams as a potential landing spot for Alexander for the same reasons as Ramsey: They need star power in the secondary. "The Rams surprisingly didn't make any changes at cornerback this offseason," Sikkema wrote. "Darious Williams (865), Cobie Durant (843) and Ahkello Witherspoon (598) played the most snaps at cornerback for the team last season, but none earned a PFF coverage grade above 62.0. "Alexander is the kind of veteran whom Los Angeles has been interested in before. The team traded for fellow star cornerback Jalen Ramsey in 2019, which proved a worthwhile addition. A move for Alexander wouldn't be as big of a splash, but it would be in the Rams' wheelhouse." The pros and cons of adding Alexander are obvious: He's elite when he's healthy, but he's expensive and recently very injury-prone. Alexander is only 28 but played just 14 games over the past two seasons. He tallied 10 interceptions in his first five seasons but just one in his past two. If the Rams add him, it will likely be for less than he could get elsewhere. But if he wants to chase a ring, the Rams offer a path to that possibility.

Former Brewers pitcher Tyler Alexander signs with White Sox, Ubers from Milwaukee, pitches the same day
Ex-Milwaukee Brewers reliever Tyler Alexander landed on his feet after the team designated him for assignment. But first, he needed a ride. Alexander signed with the Chicago White Sox on June 8, then hopped in an Uber from Milwaukee to reach Rate Field, where he then pitched three innings in a 7-5 loss to Kansas City. Advertisement "We had been talking to the White Sox prior to today, so we knew if I signed that there would be a good chance of me throwing today. So mentally I had prepared for it," Alexander told Vinnie Duber of the Chicago Sun-Times afterward. "I was prepared to the best of my ability." Tyler Alexander of the Chicago White Sox pitches during the fourth inning against the Kansas City Royals at Rate Field on June 8, 2025 in Chicago, Illinois. Alexander didn't make it to the game in time for first pitch but wound up available for long relief, surrendering one run on five hits with a walk in his three innings. The Sun-Times said it was a 90-minute ride. That … seems pretty efficient to reach the south side! "Traffic wasn't great," Alexander said. "Today has been a whirlwind." Advertisement Alexander was designated for assignment a week ago after Jose Quintana returned from injury rehab. After clearing waivers, Alexander opted for free agency, giving him the opportunity to sign with the White Sox. Alexander, signed by the Brewers in the offseason, had a 6.19 ERA and 1.486 WHIP in 21 appearances for the Brewers. He allowed five runs in his last game for the Brewers, a mop-up inning in a 17-7 win over the Phillies on May 31. He allowed runs in six of his final seven appearances with Milwaukee. Before that, through May 16, he had a much more palatable 4.20 ERA.
