Study aids the detection of riskware to help reduce cyberattacks
A research project led by the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) of Dubai has provided critical insights into Android's malware ecosystem, to help boost security and protect users from cyberattacks. The project is expected to help improve the detection and prevention of cyber threats and raise awareness among users on how they can better safeguard their devices.
Conducted by RIT Dubai Professor of Computing Security, Dr. Mohammed Al Ani, in collaboration with Abu Dhabi University faculty, the research looked specifically at riskware, which is one of the major security challenges for Android systems. The project deployed explainable machine learning technology to cluster riskware families based on their behaviors.
Speaking about the rationale for the project, Dr. Al Ani said, 'The Android operating system has become increasingly popular, and due to its open-source nature and significant market share, Android poses an attractive target for malicious actors. Although riskware constitutes a considerable portion of Android's malware vulnerabilities, it has not been studied as extensively as other types of malware such as ransomware and trojans.'
He continued, 'Riskware is usually used in one stage of a larger attack; it is a tool that provides a gateway to allow attackers to gain more access than they should, by using applications that look benign but can be misused. Until now, most studies have focussed on the final stages of the attack, but if threats can be detected in the earlier stages there is more opportunity to intervene, which is why we wanted to explore this under-researched area.'
Explaining the threats that riskware can present, Dr. Al Ani said, 'Riskware refers to applications that may pose a security threat due to their vulnerability and potential for misuse. For example, you might download a simple application like a daily planner, but if it is granted access to a lot of additional information such as contacts and photos, it can download more malicious malware that could infect your device with ransomware or use it to send spam.'
The research project applied a unique blend of techniques, never previously used in combination, to discover how different families of malware act. Clustering the families based on behaviors rather than codes, the study explored differentiating characteristics, such as how much memory they consume and how much information they send and receive over the Internet. The resulting paper, 'Behavioral Analysis of Android Riskware Families Using Clustering and Explainable Machine Learning', delivers new insights in the fight against malware.
While the primary goal of the research is to help developers build more robust protection and detection system, Dr. Al Ani also hopes that it will help to raise public awareness of the threats. He concluded, 'Attackers are constantly changing their techniques, and consumers need to be vigilant when downloading applications. Users should be suspicious if an application asks for access to other content on the device that it does not need to fulfil its function. It's very important to check that the application is from a trusted source before downloading and granting additional access.'

Google Launches Powerful AI Photo Editing Tool

Israa Farhan Tech giant Google is celebrating the 10th anniversary of Google Photos by introducing a powerful new photo editing feature powered by generative artificial intelligence. The tool, known as 'Reimagine and Auto Frame,' was previously exclusive to Pixel smartphones but is now being rolled out to a broader user base across Android devices, with iOS support expected later this year. This innovative feature allows users to alter photo elements and backgrounds using simple text-based prompts. For instance, users can request to replace a gloomy sky in a photo with a bright blue one. The Auto Frame function offers multiple framing options by cropping, expanding, or using generative AI to fill in missing elements, helping users optimize image composition effortlessly. Google states that the new editing tools centralize all enhancement options in one place, making the photo editing experience smoother and more intuitive. Google Photos will also now offer AI-powered suggestions that combine multiple effects to help users apply quick, smart enhancements using a new 'AI Enhance' option. These enhancements can include sharpening details, removing unwanted elements, or improving lighting conditions—all tailored to the specific image content. By tapping on specific areas within a photo, users will receive contextual editing suggestions, such as adjusting brightness, enhancing subject clarity, or softening the background. These features are designed to reduce the time and complexity of manual editing while boosting creativity and quality. Google confirmed that the new tools will begin rolling out to Android devices this month, with iOS compatibility following later in 2025. In addition to the AI editing upgrades, Google Photos is also improving sharing features. Users can now share albums using QR codes, simplifying the process of inviting others to view or contribute to shared photo collections. This feature is especially useful for group events, where printed QR codes can be displayed to let attendees easily access and upload their own images to a communal album. read more UAE's Lunar Mission Delayed to Tomorrow Twitter Lifts Trump's Account Ban Scientists Find Evidence Of 10،000 Black Holes Surrounding The Center Of The Milky Way Galaxy Greenhouse In Antarctica Able To Grow Vegetables Without Soil Or Sunlight Moving Over China: U.S. Is Again Home to World's Speediest Supercomputer Technology The 10 most expensive cars in the world Technology Top 10 fastest cars in the world Technology Lasers Could Make Computers 1 Million Times Faster Technology Smart technology taking control of our lives News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Sports Neymar Announced for Brazil's Preliminary List for 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers News Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly Inaugurates Two Indian Companies Arts & Culture New Archaeological Discovery from 26th Dynasty Uncovered in Karnak Temple Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan

Google Unveils Advanced Android Security

Israa Farhan In a strategic move ahead of Google I/O, Google has announced a comprehensive suite of new security and privacy features for Android, designed to safeguard users against rising threats including scams, theft, and unauthorized access. Unveiled at the Android Show on Tuesday, these enhancements span call protection, screen sharing, messaging, app permissions, and device access. The core objective is to shield users from social engineering tactics, ensure data integrity in cases of device theft or compromise, and strengthen on-device defense mechanisms. To counter phone scams, Android 16 introduces real-time intervention tools. These include blocking high-risk actions while users are engaged in calls with unknown numbers. Additionally, Android 6 and above will now prevent users from disabling Google Play Protect during such interactions, ensuring continuous malware scanning. Screen-sharing protections are also being upgraded. Android will now prompt users to stop screen sharing once a call ends. In the UK, Google is piloting fraud prevention warnings with select banks. Devices running Android 11 or newer will display alert screens if a user opens a banking app while screen sharing with an unverified number, offering a one-tap option to halt the session. Google Messages is receiving enhanced AI-powered scam detection, originally launched in March. The updated system now identifies a broader range of fraud scenarios, such as cryptocurrency scams, gift card fraud, billing hoaxes, financial impersonation, and tech support cons. To reinforce secure communications, Google Contacts will soon feature contact verification using QR codes or screen-matching codes. These verified keys confirm end-to-end encryption in Google Messages. If a SIM swap attack occurs and the attacker uses a new device, the recipient will see the verification status marked as unverified. This feature is expected to roll out later this summer for Android 10 and newer. In another critical update, Android 16 will introduce a new security challenge to block unauthorized remote access. Additionally, one-time passwords will remain hidden unless the device is recently unlocked and connected to Wi-Fi. Google Play Protect is also expanding its real-time app detection capabilities. New on-device rules will target apps with deceptive behaviors such as icon manipulation. This live protection feature will launch in the coming months for Pixel 6 and newer devices. Furthermore, Google's Advanced Protection Mode is receiving upgraded on-device defenses. A new Find My Hub feature will also debut, enabling users to track personal items, friends, and family with greater precision. read more UAE's Lunar Mission Delayed to Tomorrow Twitter Lifts Trump's Account Ban Scientists Find Evidence Of 10،000 Black Holes Surrounding The Center Of The Milky Way Galaxy Greenhouse In Antarctica Able To Grow Vegetables Without Soil Or Sunlight Moving Over China: U.S. Is Again Home to World's Speediest Supercomputer Technology The 10 most expensive cars in the world Technology Top 10 fastest cars in the world Technology Lasers Could Make Computers 1 Million Times Faster Technology Smart technology taking control of our lives News Egypt confirms denial of airspace access to US B-52 bombers Lifestyle Pistachio and Raspberry Cheesecake Domes Recipe News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Arts & Culture Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban's $4.7M LA Home Burglarized Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Sports Neymar Announced for Brazil's Preliminary List for 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers News Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly Inaugurates Two Indian Companies Arts & Culture New Archaeological Discovery from 26th Dynasty Uncovered in Karnak Temple Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War
