Fifita ready to 'rip and tear' for Ipswich in Q Cup
Dropped Gold Coast back-rower David Fifita will return to his home city of Ipswich to play in the Queensland Cup and is ready to run 250m, offload at will and have fun.
Fifita will play for the Ipswich Jets against Northern Pride on Sunday after Titans coach Des Hasler dropped him for the NRL clash with Canterbury after the 50-18 capitulation to North Queensland.
He will be player No.700 to line up for the famous Jets in what will be a homecoming after he grew up in Ipswich.
Fifita got through the team's captain's run at North Ipswich Reserve on Saturday.
Jets chairman Steve Johnson said the Maroons star was itching to carve up and do the jersey proud in the home Ipswich clash.
"David is an Ipswich lad," Johnson told AAP.
"He played junior football at Redbank Bears in under-13s and in rep sides before the Broncos moved him to Souths Acacia Ridge, and he never got to play for Ipswich after that."This will be his (fifth) game in Cup. His second game in 2018 was for Souths-Logan against us and he tore us apart as an 18-year-old kid, and then a few weeks later Wayne Bennett put him straight into the Broncos side in the NRL, and he has been there ever since. "David has taken it extraordinarily well. He was always going to. He and I have a long relationship, and when he rang yesterday he was excited to get back."
The Jets have also set Fifita a task of sorts while playing him in his favourite position.
"I have challenged him to run 250m tomorrow, and we jokingly told the other back-rowers to make 60 tackles each so Dave can run the ball. He just needs to clear his head and enjoy it," Johnson said.
"We are playing him on the left side, whereas Des has been playing him on the right. His natural side is left, so he is back where his off-loads work. He is ready to rip in."
Current Broncos playmaker Ben Hunt was famously dropped by Bennett in 2017 and went back to the Jets and played a starring role in a 44-24 win over Norths.
Former coaches Ben and Shane Walker told him to go out and gave fun and play his natural game. He was selected in the Maroons side weeks later and won back his Broncos jersey.
"One of the common facts of rugby league is that two players to go from Queensland Cup to State of Origin are Ipswich Jets halfbacks - Allan Langer in 1987 and Ben Hunt in 2017," Johnson said.
"Ben played great for us and then played Origin.
"He came back and enjoyed himself, and that has been our conversation with David. He is here to have fun and play footy. He is excited to be wearing the jersey and to be Ipswich Jet number 700."

Brisbane Broncos submit bold new logo for trademark
The Brisbane Broncos appear to be considering a rebrand for the first time in nearly 25 years. A newly designed, simplistic horse head logo has been quietly submitted to IP Australia for trademark protection. While the trademark image is black and white, it's expected any final version would draw on the club's traditional maroon, white, and gold colour scheme. FOX LEAGUE, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every game of every round in the 2025 NRL Telstra Premiership, LIVE with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited-time offer. A club spokesperson confirmed the filing but stopped short of revealing whether the logo would appear on next season's jerseys. 'A newly created corporate design was recently submitted to IP Australia,' she said. 'The design has not been approved, accepted or registered at this point.' The new design follows a global trend of cutting back on detail to favour bold colours and a clean silhouette. In the 20th century, NRL logos were generally bold and cartoonish, but it appears the corporate machines behind Australia's biggest clubs are pushing for a new sense of relevancy. Logo changes in the NRL aren't new. Clubs like the Canterbury Bulldogs and Wests Tigers have reworked their visual identity in recent decades, often seeking to modernise their image while maintaining ties to tradition. Associate Professor Sheranne Fairley from the University of Queensland said the Broncos' relatively modern history makes it more flexible than older clubs like Carlton. Founded in 1988, the Broncos aren't as constrained by tradition, though changes still carry weight with fans,' she told Nine Newspapers. She speculated the stripe in the new logo might represent the Brisbane River, a nod to the city's identity as 'the river city.' The current Broncos logo was first adopted in 2000 and later refined in 2006. It replaced the club's original 1988 crest, which also featured a stylised horse's head. The Broncos have not been afraid to mix things up in recent years and the team's radical shift to a black jersey for their win over the Gold Coast Titans. he black jerseys along with black shorts and black socks are being worn to make a powerful statement for the club's dedicated Mental Health Round. The jersey was designed in collaboration with Broncos Charity Partner, Black Dog Institute, with the club to make a major donation from the proceeds of the jersey to the organisation.

Two more Dolphins stars ruled out for season
The Dolphins have been hit with the devastating news that representative forwards Daniel Saifiti and Tom Gilbert have been ruled out for the season. With Test prop Tom Flegler already not expected back this year with a shoulder nerve issue and lock Max Plath suffering a suspected ACL tear in Friday's 56-6 win over St George Illawarra, the seventh-placed Dolphins are now in a precarious position for depth. Former NSW prop Saifiti will have surgery on Wednesday on a shoulder issue that has ruled him out since round eight but the club confirmed he would not play again this year. Captain Tom Gilbert was set to return to the Queensland side for game one of the State of Origin series when he tore a pectoral in the round 11 loss to the Warriors. He was initially set to be sidelined until round 24 but in a statement the Dolphins revealed there was worse to come. "During that operation medical staff also found a labrum tear in his shoulder that was subsequently repaired," the club said. "However the extended shoulder rehab period required for Gilbert means now he will not be able to return late in this year, as was first hoped." Plath, who the club confirmed suffered an MCL injury against the Dragons, will see a specialist next week about his ACL. The best case scenario would be a partial tear rather than a full tear that would rule him out until next year. The Dolphins are not able to buy any replacements as their top 30 roster is full for the year. They do have new signing Sebastian Su'a and veteran Kenny Bromwich set to return from injury at some stage. AAP was told former Newcastle prop Su'a was six weeks away from action after he arrived at the club with a knee injury that he has since been rehabbing. Bromwich has not played since May when he injured a shoulder playing for North Devils in the Queensland Cup. The Dolphins will at least have hard man Ray Stone back from an AC joint issue against North Queensland on Saturday night in Townsville. Stone has been named on the bench against the Cowboys, with in-form utility Kury Donoghoe to start at lock. Dolphins fullback Trai Fuller has played 40 minutes and 60 minutes in two games for the Capras in the Queensland Cup on his return from an ACL tear. The intention is for him to play a full match against Redcliffe on Saturday as he nears a return to the NRL as a utility option.

Police said a man entered a Dohles Rocks Road business about 7.30pm on Saturday and used the weapon to threaten the male staff member and demand money from the register. The employee was not physically harmed and handed over the cash, which the thief took before leaving on foot, heading north towards Kallangur. Police have yet to find the suspect, and called on anyone with footage of the incident, or who might have seen it, to come forward. The robbery happened just days before the state bolstered anti-knife-crime laws, today expanding police search powers to enable officers to conduct metal-wand searches of people in most public spaces without a warrant.
