Ex-Wallaby star gives Titans hope for life after Foran
Gold Coast hope former Wallabies No.10 Carter Gordon can be a long-term playmaker in the NRL and his first rugby league game in 357 days for Ipswich Jets was a step in the right direction. After an inspirational return following surgery on a spinal fluid leak, Gordon played 40 minutes at five-eighth for Titans affiliate club the Jets on Saturday in a 32-12 win over Western Clydesdales in Miles in the Queensland Cup. "Carter was very silky with his attack and had a try assist. It was a really successful comeback for him," Jets chairman Steve Johnson told AAP. Titans veteran playmaker Kieran Foran, who won the 2011 NRL title with Manly, will hang up the boots at the end of this year. Johnson said Gordon would make a more than suitable replacement for Foran for the 2025 cellar dwellers who are on track for the wooden spoon. "When they lose Foz (Foran) next year he is perfect to drop into that Titans side , particularly if they are not also playing a genuine halfback," Johnson said "Carter can lay on those sweep balls that Foz would lay on. "He has a big boot and was getting a lot of distance with it for us. You can see he is a class player. His passing game is really clever and he is a big body at six. "The Titans would be very pleased with his 40 minutes on return." Gordon, who played eight Tests for the Wallabies, spoke to AAP before his comeback about how much of a thrill it was to be making it back on the park. "It is very exciting to get on the field and put into action what I've learnt," he said. Johnson said the Jets were only too happy to facilitate the 24-year-old's comeback "It is good for us as a club, as part of the Titans system, to be helping their players come back," Johnson said. "We are always happy to help get blokes back on their feet." Gordon is expected to increase his minutes towards the 80-mark in the coming weeks as the Jets remain on track to play finals. When he signed with the Titans, former Gold Coast No.6 and Wallabies gun Mat Rogers told AAP he had high hopes for Gordon. "I called a couple of Carter's rugby games for Stan (Sport) from the sideline and I was really impressed with his running game and his ability to take the ball to the line and find the right person in support," Rogers said. "They are attributes that transfer to rugby league. I think he could be a tremendous asset to the Titans." The Titans are last on the NRL ladder and Gordon could be a chance to get a top grade debut in the closing rounds. Titans centre Harley Smith-Shields, formerly with Canberra, also returned from a long-term lay-off with Ipswich against Clydesdales. He is yet to play an NRL game this year. "Harley came back well," Johnson said. "He returned from a back issue and played against the Capras in round nine but then tore a hamstring badly. He missed a lot of weeks but now he is looking good."

NRL news: David Fifita theory shot down amid ugly claims surrounding Gold Coast Titans coach Des Hasler
Gold Coast captain Tino Fa'asuamaleaui has shot down suggestions David Fifita's relationship with coach Des Hasler is "untenable", amid reports the forward has been shopped around to rival clubs. Fifita was spectacularly axed for the Magic Round loss to the Bulldogs after paying the price for the Titans' 50-18 thrashing by North Queensland the week before. It came after Fifita reportedly made a stunning request to play on the left edge of the Gold Coast attack, where teammate Beau Fermor has been impressing this year. It's understood Hasler rejected Fifita's request and dumped him to reserve grade, where the former Maroons forward featured for the Ipswich Jets in their 32-0 loss to Northern Pride over the weekend, before suffering a fresh injury blow. The Gold Coast titans have responded to reports David Fifita's relationship with coach Des Hasler has become untenable. Pic: Getty Fifita had pre-season surgery on his troublesome ankle but it's since emerged that the 25-year-old has been experiencing complications that have required pain-killing injections. Fifita has reportedly been playing through pain for the opening nine rounds, which would explain why his form has been so inconsistent in 2025. ADVERTISEMENT Advertisement The hulking forward has since been ruled out of Gold Coast's NRL round 10 clash at Newcastle on Friday night and the Jets' home clash with the Townsville Blackhawks on Sunday. No timeframe has been given on an expected return date for Fifita at the Titans but Code Sports went as far as suggesting that he may have played his last game for the club due to a breakdown in the relationship with coach Hasler. But Gold Coast skipper Fa'asuamaleaui - who is close with Fifita - rubbished those suggestions and praised the way the Maroons forward handled his controversial axing, before the latest injury setback. Fifita's attitude has also come under scrutiny from critics, with another narrative emerging that he hasn't been putting in maximum effort at training. But Fa'asuamaleaui has defended his teammate and says those claims about Fifita are simply not true. "Dave was really good last week with all the media talk and a lot of things being said," Fa'asuamaleaui said. "He turned up with the right attitude and got us ready to play the game on the weekend." Hasler addressed the star's axing after the Magic Round loss to the Bulldogs and said Fifita "had some thinking to do in some areas" of his game. ADVERTISEMENT Advertisement RELATED: Titans captain backs coach after David Fifita axing But Fa'asuamaleaui said his teammate's relationship with the coach is not the issue, and backed Hasler's call after accepting that Fifita was not playing to the incredible potential he's capable of. "There's some areas he needs to work on in his game and sort some stuff away from (training)," the Titans skipper said about Fifita. "They definitely get along. Des has backed him since the beginning." ADVERTISEMENT Advertisement The Titans have now lost five games in a row and Hasler has started Fifita from the bench in four out of six of the matches he's played. But Fa'asuamaleaui says the entire squad has to accept responsibility for their poor form this season, and revealed he's made sure to check on Fifita's mental wellbeing after his well documented struggles. Tino Fa'asuamaleaui says teammate and good friend David Fifita has handled his axing at the Titans well and denied reports he's had a falling out with coach Des Hasler. Pic: Getty "I'm trying to keep him up and making sure he's okay and how his personal life is and his head ...being there as a mate," the Gold Coast captain said. "The coach is the coach for a reason and makes decisions for what's best for the team and club. Whatever the coach says, I back." Titans CEO Steve Mitchell has also moved to squash reports that Fifita is being shopped around to rival clubs after insisting he remains a huge part of the club's future plans. Fifita is one of Gold Coast's top earners and his $1 million-a-season deal does not run out until the end of 2026. Reports claim Fifita would be willing to take a pay cut to move to a rival club but the Titans say they want him to stay and have not granted the forward permission to speak with other teams. ADVERTISEMENT Advertisement 'Dave is an important part of the roster,' Titans CEO Mitchell told Code Sports. 'We expect him to have a big role to play moving forward.' Fifita extended with the Titans last year after backflipping on a big-money move to join the Roosters. He was also linked with a return to the Broncos where salary cap restraints were an obvious issue before ultimately reaffirming his commitment to the Titans. with AAP

David Fifita ruled out indefinitely as mystery around Gold Coast Titans axing deepens
Gold Coast captain Tino Fa'asuamaleaui has vowed to not walk out on the battling Titans as the curious case of David Fifita took another twist. Fifita has been ruled out indefinitely just days after being dumped to reserve grade by coach Des Hasler. The enigmatic ex-Maroons forward will consult a specialist due to ongoing problems associated with ankle surgery he underwent last year. Fifita's sidelining after a one-game cameo in the Hostplus Cup is the latest turn in an intriguing plot at Parkwood. Hasler sent the $1 million-a-season star to the Ipswich Jets last weekend, reportedly after Fifita requested a switch to his preferred left back row spot currently occupied by in-form Maroons hopeful Beau Fermor. In the lead-up to his Jets debut, Fifita told this masthead 'the real truth will come out one day', potentially a reference to the ankle complaint which limited his pre-season. If Fifita's axing was designed to spark the Titans it failed as Gold Coast slumped to a fifth straight defeat to the Bulldogs at Magic Round. Titans captain Tino Fa'asuamaleaui is close mates with David Fifita. Picture: NRL Images In the lead-up to Friday night's desperate showdown with the Knights in Newcastle, Fa'asuamaleaui said he backed Hasler's decision to relegate his best mate at the Titans. 'I'm trying to keep him up and making sure he's okay and how his personal life is and his head, being there as a mate,' he said. 'The coach is the coach for a reason and makes decisions for what's best for the team and club. 'Whatever the coach says, I back. 'There's some areas (Fifita) needs to work on in his game and sort some stuff out away from here. 'They (Hasler and Fifita) definitely get along. Des has backed him since the beginning. 'Dave was really good last week with all the media talk and a lot of things being said. 'He turned up with the right attitude and got us ready to play the game on the weekend. 'His attitude's been good.' The Fifita bombshell has raised speculation about the Broncos product's future on the Gold Coast. Fifita, 25, went within a whisker of quitting the Titans last year after signing with the Roosters, only to backflip on the contract days later. The Titans went into meltdown internally and urged Fifita to renege on his decision, which he did, committing to the Gold Coast until the end of 2026. Now on the outer and a free agent from November 1, Fifita's future has become a talking point again. Fa'asuamaleaui is also technically a free agent at the same time due to a series of clauses Gold Coast management agreed to in his $12 million, 10-year contract. Despite being contracted on the Gold Coast until 2033, the ex-Storm premiership winner can activate a get-out clause and quit the Titans at the end of next season. But he insists that won't happen despite the Titans staring down the barrel of a fourth straight bottom four finish. Tino Fa'asuamaleaui (R) has thrown his support behind his embattled mate. Picture: NRL photos 'For sure (I'm staying), I'm happy I made the decision,' Fa'asuamaleaui said ahead of his 100th NRL game. 'I'm doing everything I can to change this club and make it a winning culture and strong club to compete with in the NRL. 'I'm not backing out of anything. I'm in it for it all, through the hard times and the good times hopefully in the future. 'I'm definitely confident (we can turn it around), that's why I've stayed here for so long. 'I back the coach and everyone involved in this squad to get us there.' While Tom Weaver (concussion) has been sidelined and Kieran Foran (ankle) is yet to receive clearance to play, halfback Jayden Campbell will return from an ankle injury against the Knights.
