NRL news: David Fifita theory shot down amid ugly claims surrounding Gold Coast Titans coach Des Hasler
It came after Fifita reportedly made a stunning request to play on the left edge of the Gold Coast attack, where teammate Beau Fermor has been impressing this year. It's understood Hasler rejected Fifita's request and dumped him to reserve grade, where the former Maroons forward featured for the Ipswich Jets in their 32-0 loss to Northern Pride over the weekend, before suffering a fresh injury blow.

Fifita had pre-season surgery on his troublesome ankle but it's since emerged that the 25-year-old has been experiencing complications that have required pain-killing injections. Fifita has reportedly been playing through pain for the opening nine rounds, which would explain why his form has been so inconsistent in 2025.

The hulking forward has since been ruled out of Gold Coast's NRL round 10 clash at Newcastle on Friday night and the Jets' home clash with the Townsville Blackhawks on Sunday. No timeframe has been given on an expected return date for Fifita at the Titans but Code Sports went as far as suggesting that he may have played his last game for the club due to a breakdown in the relationship with coach Hasler.
But Gold Coast skipper Fa'asuamaleaui - who is close with Fifita - rubbished those suggestions and praised the way the Maroons forward handled his controversial axing, before the latest injury setback. Fifita's attitude has also come under scrutiny from critics, with another narrative emerging that he hasn't been putting in maximum effort at training. But Fa'asuamaleaui has defended his teammate and says those claims about Fifita are simply not true.
"Dave was really good last week with all the media talk and a lot of things being said," Fa'asuamaleaui said. "He turned up with the right attitude and got us ready to play the game on the weekend." Hasler addressed the star's axing after the Magic Round loss to the Bulldogs and said Fifita "had some thinking to do in some areas" of his game.

Titans captain backs coach after David Fifita axing
But Fa'asuamaleaui said his teammate's relationship with the coach is not the issue, and backed Hasler's call after accepting that Fifita was not playing to the incredible potential he's capable of. "There's some areas he needs to work on in his game and sort some stuff away from (training)," the Titans skipper said about Fifita. "They definitely get along. Des has backed him since the beginning."

The Titans have now lost five games in a row and Hasler has started Fifita from the bench in four out of six of the matches he's played. But Fa'asuamaleaui says the entire squad has to accept responsibility for their poor form this season, and revealed he's made sure to check on Fifita's mental wellbeing after his well documented struggles.

"I'm trying to keep him up and making sure he's okay and how his personal life is and his head ...being there as a mate," the Gold Coast captain said. "The coach is the coach for a reason and makes decisions for what's best for the team and club. Whatever the coach says, I back."
Titans CEO Steve Mitchell has also moved to squash reports that Fifita is being shopped around to rival clubs after insisting he remains a huge part of the club's future plans. Fifita is one of Gold Coast's top earners and his $1 million-a-season deal does not run out until the end of 2026. Reports claim Fifita would be willing to take a pay cut to move to a rival club but the Titans say they want him to stay and have not granted the forward permission to speak with other teams.

'Dave is an important part of the roster,' Titans CEO Mitchell told Code Sports. 'We expect him to have a big role to play moving forward.' Fifita extended with the Titans last year after backflipping on a big-money move to join the Roosters. He was also linked with a return to the Broncos where salary cap restraints were an obvious issue before ultimately reaffirming his commitment to the Titans.

Sharks fans rocked as Cameron McInnes news leaves Craig Fitzgibbon with huge call
The Cronulla Sharks will have to continue their top four surge without influential lock Cameron McInnes after the forward ruptured his ACL in the win over the Gold Coast Titans. Braydon Trindall and Nicho Hynes tore a depleted-Titans side apart on Saturday having smashed their rivals 54-22 in front of their home crowd. The Sharks have struggled for consistency in 2025, but Hynes and Trindall showed the damage they can do when linking up with their outside backs. However, coach Craig Fitzgibbon will be ruing the loss of his captain with scans revealing the lock is in for a long recovery. "Sharks captain Cameron McInnes faces a lengthy recovery period after scans on Monday confirmed a ruptured ACL," a Sharks statement said. McInnes will miss the remainder of the season and will most likely miss the start of the 2026 season. This is the second ACL rupture of the 31-year-old's career having done his other knee when playing for the Dragons in 2021. McInnes' injury is a massive blow to the Sharks and their hopes of winning the NRL premiership. The workhorse played State of Origin Game 1 last year having been rewarded for his defensive efforts. McInnes currently holds the record for most tackles in a single NRL game. The lock currently sits third on the list for most tackles this season. Teammate Blayke Brailey currently leads the way. Tellingly, coach Fitzgibbon has never selected another current player at lock in a premiership game, while having McInnes available. The coach relies on his captain, but admitted it was an opportunity for someone else to stamp their mark. "It'll be an opportunity for someone else to step up as a leader," Fitzgibbon said when expecting McInnes would miss the remainder of the season. Unfortunately, the Sharks will also finish their regular season without second-rower Briton Nikora after the star copped a three-game ban last week. Horrible news with scans confirming Cameron McInnes suffered an ACL rupture in Round surgery & 9 months recovery - is the 2nd ACL reconstruction of McInnes' career. Likely to have a delayed start to season 2026 which kicks off in 7 months least the 13th ACL… — NRL PHYSIO (@nrlphysio) August 18, 2025 Sharks' NRL final hopes take huge blow The Sharks snapped their finals losing streak last year having defeated the Cowboys in the semi-finals. However, they went on to lose to Penrith 26-6 in the preliminary finals. This means the Sharks have only won one game in their last nine finals appearances. And the side sitting in seventh will be hoping this year is different as they make a late push up the ladder. The Sharks have the opportunity to still reach the top four in 2025 with two wins from their next two games. Fitzgibbon's men have a bye this round, which will see them gain two points and momentarily jump into fourth depending on other results. And Fitzgibbon will be forced to select a new captain for the run home. Hynes has filled in as captain before, while Teig Wilton has done the same in recent seasons. Although Fitzgibbon's first decision will be who will replace McInnes. Hohepa Huru could move straight from the bench and into the starting side at 13, while fans might be excited to see Jesse Colquhoun take up the role for the remaining few games of the regular season. Unfortunate news for Cam McInnes I believe its time to make Jesse Colhoooon our starting 13In fact id also name him captain Id even re name the club as the Cronulla Colhoooons Go all in — SuthoDan (@suthodan) August 17, 2025 The Cam McInnes injury is just starting to kick in for me. From a team and individual perspective. I'm a big admirer of his work, and him as a person. I wish him all the best 🦈 #UpUp — SharkCast 🦈 (@sharkcastpod) August 16, 2025

Mark Carroll's message to Jake Trbojevic as Manly advise veteran to make vital call
Sea Eagles officials have reportedly told Jake Trbojevic to take the rest of the season off after his latest concussion following Manly legend Mark Carroll admitting he is concerned over the star's wellbeing. Trbojevic did not play in his side's 26-12 loss to the Wests Tigers on the weekend with Manly's defeat just about ruling them out of finals footy. Trbojevic was sitting out due to the 11-day concussion protocol after suffering a head knock against the Raiders a week earlier. Unfortunately for Trbojevic, this was his third serious concussion across the last four months. And Channel Nine reporter Danny Weidler has claimed Manly officials are urging Trbojevic to sit out the remaining three games of the season. With Manly needing results to go there way to make finals footy, plus most likely needing to win their three remaining games, it appears their season is coming to a close. And officials clearly want Trbojevic to give his body a rest considering the concerns around the fan favourite. The 31-year-old is likely set to take a pay cut to remain at the Sea Eagles beyond his current contract, but is a popular figure among the fans and other players. And while his season could be over, fans just want the best for the Manly superstar and that includes former forward Carroll. Last week, Carroll spoke to the and said he reached out to Trbojevic amid the concern surrounding his future in the game. "Concussions stay in your body. I look at Jake, he is one of the most technical defenders I've seen since Steve Menzies," Carroll told the publication. "But this game of rugby league... you don't realise until you retire the effects these concussions have had on you. You can't say (he should) retire, but hopefully it doesn't get to the stage where he has to be medically retired." Carroll has spoken publicly about his battle with suspected CTE following his footy career. And the Manly legend admitted he has concerns over Trbojevic and Roosters forward Victor Radley. The Roosters star has suffered a number of concussions in 2025 and there are growing concerns over his wellbeing and future in the game. LATEST. Manly officials say it's their preference that Jake Trbojevic takes the rest of the year off after a seriesof head knocks. @NRLonNine @9NewsSyd — Danny Weidler (@Danny_Weidler) August 18, 2025 Mark Carroll urges change to NRL concussion rule Carroll has led calls for the NRL to increase the stand down period for concussion protocols. The current rules force a player to stand-down for a minimum 11 days if they are concussed. But the former Manly star said players should be recovering for a much longer period. Earlier this year, the Melbourne Storm opted to give Will Warbrick extended time off after his latest concussion incident. Warbrick is yet to return to NRL footy since his round four game, but has returned to Melbourne Storm training. The Roosters have acted when it comes to their players copping repeated head knocks and concerns. Former captain Boyd Cordner retired early due to a number of head knocks, while Jake Friend also did the same. Sharks star Dale Finucane also retired prematurely because of similar concerns. It is reportedly Manly officials preference that Jake Trbojevic takes the rest of the season off as he recovers from from his latest concussion (via @Danny_Weidler).Jake suffered 3 concussions in the past 4 months - each concussion case is different but have seen multiple… — NRL PHYSIO (@nrlphysio) August 18, 2025 Teammates concern over Jake Trbojevic's injury Following Trbojevic's injury last week, teammate Corey Waddell admitted it was confronting watching the Manly star leave the field with another concussion. "It's pretty tough, obviously being on the field watching it happen is very confronting. Jake being my brother-in-law, I care for him so much," Waddell said. "I know he's in good hands. Hopefully we see him back this year. His welfare comes first."

Dewald and dew a potential Aussie headache in ODIs
The dew and a bloke dubbed 'Baby AB' loom as Australia's two biggest obstacles when their three-match ODI series against South Africa gets underway in Cairns on Tuesday. Glenn Maxwell's unbeaten 62 off 36 balls in the deciding game three of the T20 series helped Australia wrap up a 2-1 victory in that format on Saturday night. Maxwell hit the game-winning four with the penultimate delivery to secure the thrilling two-wicket victory in Cairns. It was a memorable night out in Cairns for Glenn Maxwell! #AUSvSA — (@cricketcomau) August 17, 2025 But it wasn't the only talking point to come out of the match, with the dew and the explosive hitting from South African rising star Dewald Brevis also notable. Brevis followed up his unbeaten 125 off 56 balls in game two with a thumping 53 off 26 balls in game three, with the 22-year-old striking Aaron Hardie for four consecutive sixes. The man dubbed 'Baby AB' in reference to South African great AB de Villiers looks set to be handed his ODI debut for Tuesday's series opener to give him a chance to inflict more pain on the Aussies. The dewy outfield in Cairns also wreaked havoc - mostly for the South Africans given they had to bowl second. At the beginning of the crucial 18th over and with Australia still requiring 27 runs for victory, South African paceman Kagiso Rabada unleashed a beamer that flew more than a metre above Maxwell's head and through to the wicketkeeper without bouncing. Rabada looked at his hand in disbelief immediately after the mishap, and his subsequent free hit was struck for six by Maxwell as Australia set sail for victory. Dew was also an issue in Darwin at the start of the T20 series and it could be a factor yet again for the ODI opener at Cazalys Stadium in Cairns on Tuesday. Australia captain Mitch Marsh, who has elected to bowl first in all 20 of his coin toss wins across ODIs and T20 internationals, is aware of the dew factor. "We saw the ball get really soft in Darwin," Marsh said on Monday. "Playing with dew is not something we're used to in Australia, so that's been a challenge for us. "Hopefully there's not too much dew and it's an even ball game." Mitch Marsh has won the coin toss 20 times as the Australian skipper and chosen to bowl every single time 😱Preview the #AUSvSA ODI series: — (@cricketcomau) August 18, 2025 Games two and three of the ODI series will be played at the recently refurbished Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay. Australia's most recent ODI match was their semi-final loss to India at the Champions Trophy in March. Maxwell and Steve Smith have since retired from the format, Spencer Johnson and Matt Short are currently injured, while Jake Fraser-McGurk, Sean Abbott and Tanveer Sangha haven't been selected for the upcoming ODI series. With the T20s out of the way, South Africa have welcomed in captain Temba Bavuma, veteran spinner Keshav Maharaj and recent Test triple-centurion Wiaan Mulder, as well as top-order batters Matthew Breetzke and Tony de Zorzi. Marsh is captaining the Australian side in the ODIs due to the absence of Pat Cummins, who is busy preparing for this summer's Ashes series. Despite the euphoria of the T20 series win, Australia's players have quickly reset their focus for the ODIs. "We start the series fresh, we start the series 0-0," Marsh said. "We know these shorter series it's really important to get off to a (fast) start, so hopefully that's the case tomorrow."
