Preview: Zamalek aim to regain winning form against Modern Sport - Egyptian Football

Cairo giants Zamalek will be looking to bounce back when they face Modern Sport in the Egyptian Premier League at Suez Canal Stadium on Thursday. Despite launching their campaign brilliantly with a 2-0 victory over Ceramica Cleopatra, the White Knights suffered a setback after a goalless draw against Arab Contractors on Saturday. The match saw Zamalek struggle to create clear-cut scoring opportunities, a point highlighted by coach Yannick Ferrera. The Belgian tactician admitted that his side struggled during the game against Arab Contractors. "We faced challenges in the final third of the field during the last match, where some mistakes affected our ability to score goals. However, we learn from every match and strive to improve our performance day by day," Ferrera explained during the pre-match press conference on Tuesday. He added that "the conditions for the Arab Contractors match were difficult, especially the quality of the pitch, which was not ideal, affecting our playing style." Furthermore, Ferrara noted that "the opponent relied on long balls and time-wasting," but that it was their role as a team to find solutions to these challenges instead of complaining. He also said he was happy to play against Modern Sport at the Suez Canal Authority Stadium. The Cairo-based side received a blow ahead of the game, however, when midfielder Nabil 'Donga' Emad was ruled out due to a knee injury sustained in the previous match. On the other hand, Zamalek could benefit from the services of left-back Ahmed Fatouh, who returned to training after apologising for attending a party without permission. Whether he participates in the match remains at the coach's discretion. Zamalek, currently fifth in the league standings with four points, will be looking to cement their supremacy over Modern Sport. Zamalek have emerged victorious in five of their previous seven league games, while Modern Sport have won one match and drawn one. On the other hand, sixth-placed Modern Sport kicked off their campaign with an impressive 2-2 draw against title holders Ahly. Then the team claimed a 2-1 victory over Ittihad of Alexandria in the previous matchday. Coach Magdy Abdel-Aaty, who took the helm at Modern Sport back in June, is expected to rely on veteran players such as Mohamed Abou Gabal, defender Ali El Fil, and striker Hossam Hassan to provide the experience needed in such games. He will also eye new signings Mahmoud Mamdouh, Rashad El Metwaly, Godwin Chika, and Adem Redjem to bolster his squad. ADNEC Group awarded UAE Year of Sustainability Seal for landmark progress on Sustainability initiatives - Middle East Business News and Information

Powered entirely by clean energy, ADNEC Centre Abu Dhabi sets a regional benchmark for green venues. ADNEC Group's TerraTile transforms event waste into reusable flooring, advancing circular economy practices in exhibitions. Over AED 8.85 billion in economic impact delivered in 2024, vs 7.4 billion in 2023, through sustainable operations and partnerships. Abu Dhabi, August, 2025 – ADNEC Group has been officially recognised with the 'Plan to Action: Year of Sustainability's Seal' for its tangible, data-backed achievements in environmental stewardship and sustainable innovation. The award was granted following a national open call to UAE-based organisations demonstrating measurable, creative, and community-driven sustainability efforts aligned with the goals of the Year of Sustainability 2024. The seal, awarded by the UAE's Year of Sustainability initiative marks a continuation of the national drive to embed sustainable actions across all sectors. This year's focus shifted from learning to doing, encouraging organisations to act across four areas: green transport, energy and water conservation, responsible consumption, and planting wisely. Sustainability is integral to how ADNEC Group operates, contributes to the community of Ahu Dhabi, and is aligned with the UAE's national vision. The Group plays a key role in Abu Dhabi's economic development, with the Sustainability Seal a recognition of the impact of its efforts. ADNEC Group's submission was recognised for its ambitious, system-wide sustainability efforts. ADNEC Centre Abu Dhabi is now fully powered by clean energy—sourced from solar, wind, and nuclear—through a Clean Energy Trade Agreement with EWEC. This offsets all electricity-related carbon emissions via International Renewable Energy Certificates (IRECs) accredited by the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy, making it the first and largest event venue in the Middle East to achieve this milestone. In parallel, the Group has introduced AI-driven HVAC systems at the venue, projected to reduce annual electricity consumption by 20%, or approximately 6 million kilowatt hours. Waste reduction and circularity have become central to the group's operations. More than half of all waste across ADNEC Group's business clusters is now recycled, and, the catering arm of the ADNEC Group, Capital Catering's facilities process up to 1,200 kg of food waste per day into compost or a dry soil enhancer. Used cooking oil is also converted into biodiesel. Meanwhile, TerraTile—a 100% recycled, modular flooring system developed with Terrax—turns event waste into durable flooring, offering a recyclable, UAE-made alternative to conventional stand materials. Additionally, when TerraTiles reach the end of their life cycle, they in turn, can be recycled to produce new ones. Community engagement was a key element of ADNEC Group's application. Through partnerships with Tadweer, Ne'ma, and the UAE Red Crescent, the group donates unserved food, expands public awareness campaigns, and encourages responsible waste behaviours at events. It has also embedded ethical sourcing practices across its supply chain and scaled local procurement through its In-Country Value programme (ICV). In 2024, ADNEC Group contributed AED 8.566 billion in Gross Value Added (GVA) to Abu Dhabi's economy, marking a significant increase from AED 7.4 billion in 2023. The Group also supported more than 62,000 jobs across the UAE—up from approximately 51,000 the previous year. Additionally, employee volunteerism nearly doubled year-on-year, with total volunteer hours reaching close to 27,000 in 2024 compared to 13,000 in 2023, underscoring ADNEC Group's growing social and economic impact. The recognition from the Year of Sustainability reflects ADNEC Group's broader Net Zero strategy, which includes a full assessment of Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions and a defined transition plan aiming for a 25% reduction in carbon footprint per employee by 2030. ADNEC Group has also awarded a rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) project at ADNEC Centre Abu Dhabi, expected to generate more than 8.5 million kilowatt hours of renewable energy in its first year. The system will supply nearly 30% of the venue's electricity needs and offset approximately 6,000 metric tonnes of carbon emissions annually. Entities awarded the Seal are featured on the national 'Plan to Action' map and are invited to continue leading by example as the UAE advances toward its 2050 net-zero target.

Slimmed-down Bayern Munich still the team to beat as new Bundesliga season begins - World

Bayern Munich reclaimed its Bundesliga throne last season. Vincent Kompany and Harry Kane are looking for another title to consolidate their rule and build their own dynasty. Ahead of the opening game of the league season Friday between Bayern and Leipzig, the defending champion remains the team to beat and the role of closest challenger is wide open. Most of the likeliest candidates – Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Dortmund, Stuttgart, Leipzig and Eintracht Frankfurt – have lost key players. Few have made standout signings since last season. Leverkusen, the only team to break Bayern's dominance over the last 13 years, has had a huge overhaul of the side that won the Bundesliga in 2024. Gone are key players like Florian Wirtz, Granit Xhaka, Jeremie Frimpong and captain Jonathan Tah, as is star coach Xabi Alonso. Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has been tasked with leading the rebuilt team's fresh start. Bayern's bid for glory Luis Díaz's arrival from Liverpool gives Bayern a new attacking threat, as he showed last weekend with a goal on his debut as Bayern lifted the German Supercup. In Kane's third season as Bayern's star striker, the structure around him is no longer a holdover from the club's Robert Lewandowski era. Leroy Sané, Thomas Müller, Kingsley Coman and Mathys Tel have all left. This slimmed-down squad will require Díaz and the experienced Serge Gnabry – the only remaining forward from Bayern's 2020 Champions League win – to be consistently effective. The biggest pressure might be on Michael Olise. A long-term injury at the Club World Cup means Jamal Musiala may not return before 2026, leaving Olise, usually a winger, to occupy a less familiar role in the center. Racking up 20 goals and 23 assists last season was a strong start, but Olise was mostly on the right flank. Tah adds strength and experience to the defense after signing from Leverkusen. Kompany can call on some exciting young midfielders after Tom Bischof and Lennart Karl both shone in preseason. Bellingham at Dortmund — again From Jude to Jobe, there's a Bellingham running Dortmund's midfield again. Still only 19, the younger of the Bellingham brothers signed from Sunderland and straight away looked at home on a bigger stage when he made his Dortmund debut at the Club World Cup. Jobe Bellingham is the standout new arrival among the group of would-be Bayern challengers, who are each trying to adapt after stars departed. Leverkusen said goodbye to a host of title-winners, while Frankfurt bid farewell to Hugo Ekitiké and goalkeeper Kevin Trapp, and Jamie Gittens left Dortmund for Chelsea. Ahead of Jürgen Klopp's first full season as Red Bull's head of global soccer, Leipzig has reportedly spent over 110 million euros ($128 million) on seven young players — Brazilian striker Rômulo is the oldest at 23 — but lost Benjamin Šeško to Manchester United. There could be more signings before the transfer window closes Sept. 1. Leverkusen and Frankfurt in particular have earned much more than they've spent so far. Back but for how long? Promoted teams Hamburger SV and Cologne's biggest challenge will be to stay in the top division. Cologne brought back veteran coach Friedhelm Funkel for its last two games to make sure of its return as second division champion, but former Paderborn coach Lukas Kwasniok has been appointed to ensure it stays. Hamburg, which was the longest surviving founding member of the Bundesliga, endured seven seasons away. Elation at finally securing its return has given way to sober reality after a summer of discouraging results. Hamburg needed extra time to get past fifth-tier Pirmasens in the first round of the German Cup last weekend. Merlin Polzin's team starts its Bundesliga campaign at Borussia Mönchengladbach on Sunday before hosting St. Pauli for what is sure to be an emotional city derby the following weekend.
