
Support from colleagues, students helps disabled teacher inspire
SMK Mengkebang teacher Hashim Mohamad, 36, was born with underdeveloped legs and left arm. He uses his right arm to move around.
He carries out his duties as an educator with full commitment, becoming an inspiration for his colleagues and students.
"I'm not like other people. But I believe I am just as capable as any other teacher. I want to be living proof that limitations are not an excuse to fail."
Hashim began his journey as an educator in July 2014 and currently teaches Bahasa Melayu at SMK Mengkebang.
Since the beginning of his career, he has given his best to his students to help them succeed.
"Due to my movement limitations, the school has provided me a classroom on the ground floor to ease the teaching and learning process.
"It has been really helpful as I no longer need to climb stairs to reach upper-floor classrooms.
"The school also provided short tables to help me communicate with students more easily.
"I make full use of technology, such as a laptop and a projector, so I don't face issues delivering my lessons to students.
"I can walk and climb stairs, but I am slower than others. Having a classroom on the ground floor has been very helpful.
"Alhamdulillah, all the teachers and students have been incredibly supportive. They often help me with my movement and everyday tasks."
Hashim is the fifth of eight siblings and holds a Bachelor in Malaysian Studies with Education from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris Perak.
He said teaching with a disability was not an easy task.
"Every job has its challenges. As an educator who is disabled, my role is to teach despite my limitations.
"Every day, I drive to school with a car modified for disabled people.
"I have never seen my disability as a barrier. I use it as motivation to inspire my students and society.
"I wanted to be a lawyer, but Allah SWT led me to education. I'm grateful that I can educate the next generation."
Hashim's dedication has won him recognition.
He received the OKU Teacher Icon Award from the Kelantan Education Department in 2019, the Excellent OKU Teacher Award from the same department in 2018, the Active Young Teacher Award from the Kuala Krai District Education Office in 2017 and the Successful OKU Award from the Social Welfare Department in 2015.

Dedicated Tamil school teachers leave no child behind
Thank you, teachers: The writer's daughter, who is also the school's 'Best STPM 2024 Student', S. Harshaa, with Ramesh (centre) and Selva Kumar. I AM writing as a proud parent to commend a truly remarkable secondary school – SMK Vivekananda, Brickfields – which I believe deserves to be recognised. While I prefer to remain anonymous, I cannot stay silent about the outstanding dedication I have witnessed from the teachers and leadership of this school. What touched me most is how the teachers consistently go above and beyond – not just in teaching, but also in transforming ordinary students into high achievers. Their passion, commitment and teamwork are nothing short of inspiring. They believe in every student's potential and work tirelessly to bring out the best in each one. School head A. Selva Kumar's hands-on leadership is impressive. He leads by example – present, involved, supportive, and fully committed to the welfare and academic progress of the students. I must also acknowledge the school's Form Six senior assistant P. Ramesh for his sincere and tireless support of the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) students. His efforts have played a vital role in their achievements. This year, five students scored a perfect CGPA of 4.0 in the exams. What makes this especially outstanding is that some of them come from B40 families, with limited access to tuition or resources outside of school. Their success is a result of the school's strong academic support system, including night classes, weekend lessons, and even online sessions organised by the teachers. As a parent, I have been deeply moved by the school's commitment. Their unity and drive are a reminder of the true spirit of teaching. Inspired by this, I made the decision to transfer my son to the school earlier this year. The change has been remarkable – he is thriving in ways that exceeded my expectations. He has improved significantly in Bahasa Melayu, a subject he used to struggle with. He used to get Bs and Cs but now, thanks to the teachers' dedication and effective teaching methods, he consistently scores As. More importantly, he has become motivated and interested in studying – something which I fully credit to the way the teachers engage their students. I truly believe more parents deserve to know about this exceptional school, where passion drives progress. This is proof that great students are shaped not by the prestige of a school, but by the greatness of its teachers. On that note, I'd also like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the SMK Vivekananda Parent-Teacher Association for its consistent encouragement and contributions towards the school's academic initiatives, and to the Vivekananda Ashram – especially board of governors chairman Tan Sri Dr Ampikaipakan Kandiah for his ongoing support of our students.
