Animesh Kujur: From suffering heatstrokes to breaking records and is India's 'Usain Bolt'

NEW DELHI: "Baap re baap (Oh my gosh!)" --
Animesh Kujur
could barely cope with the humidity as the 2025 athletics season was still picking up pace in Chennai.
Along with a host of competitors, April's Indian Open Athletics Meet brought punishing heat and stifling humidity. For the 21-year-old from Odisha, it was too hot to handle.
"I actually got heatstroke both before and after the events. I had to run four races in a single day and just couldn't stay hydrated," Animesh, Asia's current top-ranked 200m sprinter, tells

in a free-wheeling chat.

'We didn't plan hydration properly. I train in somewhat similar conditions in Odisha, but I didn't think it'd be that extreme.'
Battling heat
Just five days later,
Animesh
was due to race at the Senior Federation Cup in Kochi. As the extreme Kerala heat made national headlines, training was out of the question; recovery was all he could manage.
"I wasn't sure if I'd be able to perform well there either," he recalls.
Still nursing fatigue, he qualified for the final and clocked 20.60 seconds in the semis. 'I could feel I was running at 95% of my potential.'
With stalwarts like Manikanta Hoblidhar (former 100m national record holder) and Amlan Borgohain (former 100m and 200m national record holder) in the mix, the final needed more than potential.
'I stuck to my plan and pushed hard in the last 100 metres. After crossing the finish line, I didn't celebrate. I was just staring at the clock, waiting to see if I'd gone under 20.50.'
Then it flashed: 20.40 seconds. A new national record.
Animesh Kujur
'It felt unreal,' Animesh recollects. What followed was a familiar celebration, arms pointed to the sky in a lightning bolt, a tribute to his idol.
'When I got into athletics in 2021, the only name I knew was Usain Bolt; tall, skinny, a bit like me, even the same skin tone,' he laughs. 'Over the last two years, I've started leading the 100m and 200m fields in India. Bolt has been such a big inspiration that I always try to recreate his signature pose.'
Breaking records
Breaking records is now Animesh's habit. Later in April, he teamed up with Gurindervir Singh, Manikanta, and Amlan at the National Relay Carnival in Chandigarh.
The quartet clocked 38.69 seconds to set a new national record in the men's 4x100m relay, after just one training session together.
Animesh, who trains in Bhubaneswar, had to join the others in Mumbai just before the meet. 'James Hillier sir (the athletics director at Reliance Foundation) helped us a lot with baton exchanges, the steps, the rhythm, everything,' says Animesh.
'My coach,
Martin Owens
, manages everything: how I eat, sleep, behave, and where I go. Just two years ago, my life was completely different. Now it's fully professional. I can feel the difference,' he admits.
Football's loss, athletics' gain
Athletics, however, wasn't initially in his scheme of things, as Animesh started out playing football in school.
'During Covid, I couldn't just sit at home,' he says. He began jogging with army aspirants. Someone suggested he try a state meet in November 2020. Unaware it was a national qualifier, he went and surprised everyone.
In January 2021, he ran his first nationals without formal training, finishing fifth in both the 100m and 200m. Coming from a family of police officers and defence personnel, Animesh was once urged to quit sports due to the future uncertainty around the field and the fear of fatal injuries: 'My mother was worried about the injuries and lack of stability in sports. She asked me to quit. But my uncle and father backed me.'
He remembers: 'In 2022, around 12:30 am, I was sitting outside with my dad and uncle. My mom was completely against athletics. But my uncle stood by me and told my dad, 'Let him try, yaar. I'm with him — let's see how it goes.' That support meant everything.'
Three years on, Animesh has become one of the brightest stars in Indian athletics. As his parents now beam with pride, their son is busy taking selfies with his followers.
Just last week, he clinched gold in the 200m at the UAE Athletics Grand Prix, clocking 20.45 seconds, a new meet record, and the fastest time by an Indian in an international race.
Virat Kohli was always a VIBE during India's practice sessions
Later this month, he will line up in Gumi, South Korea, aiming for glory at the
Asian Athletics Championships
and a ticket to the World Championships.
'I want to hit 20.20 seconds. I've already clocked 20.32 -- unofficially, but it gave me confidence,' he says. 'The qualifying mark for Worlds is 20.16, but a gold medal in Gumi will get me in anyway. I'm ranked No.1 in Asia right now, so the goal is to stay consistent.'
It is going to be a long road ahead for Animesh, but the sprinter definitely knows the importance of patience and perseverance, and that he is just off the blocks.

Goldberg is ready to give one last show to his fans before WWE retirement
Goldberg (Image via WWE) Once one of the biggest in-ring names in the WCW, Goldberg joined WWE a few years into the transition after his contract with AOL Time Warner expired. He then went on a break for a few years before returning to the WWE stage in 2016. But at 58 years of age, he is not what he once was, and it's starting to slow him down a little. This is why he is now getting ready for his last match in the squared circle, preparing for his retirement from WWE. Goldberg talks WWE retirement and the toll it is taking on his body Goldberg wants his retirement match to be a once-in-a-lifetime thing and, thus, is preparing heavily for it. He said that he knows when his last match is going to be, but getting ready for it has not been easy. Heavy training has taken its toll and injuries have been popping up one after the other. Appearing on CarCast , the WWE veteran said that he has injured himself multiple times while getting fight-ready for the finale. "I know the date (of my retirement match). No one else knows the date public-wise… I hurt myself a couple times in the past three months. But I pulled back... I've got a very high bar to set that I set for myself and 99 times out of a hundred, it's unrealistic… I've been in the ring a couple times. I'm gonna get in the ring again today and it's just tough, man. It is tough.' Goldberg said that he knows it is unrealistic, especially at this age, to think that his body can handle the pressure that he is putting it in. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo But at the same time, he wants to do the best he can in what would be his goodbye to something he has loved for so long. There have been some rumors that he could be at the Saturday Night Main Event in Atlanta in July, which could serve as his retirement stage, but it's been speculation as of now. Goldberg is ready to give his all one last time Goldberg is ready to put in his everything, even if it means a couple of injuries on the way. From Muay Thai to some really intense workout sessions, the WWE Hall of Famer is not pulling any stops. He has blown his shoulders and bicep and pulled his hamstring, all while trying to throw a high kick. But none of that is going to stop him. 'I'm not just showing up to show up. I need to show up and be me… That was the first day that I felt really good.' He knows what's at stake, and is not going to let his fans down at any cost, even if it means sporting a couple of injuries and whatnot. Fans will definitely be waiting to learn more about his retirement match, while Goldberg gets ready for one last fight. Gautam Gambhir (AP Photo) NEW DELHI: How many matches will Jasprit Bumrah play in the India vs England Test series? Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir on Thursday provided a key update on Bumrah's availability ahead of the much-anticipated five-match Test series in England, which begins on June 20 at Headingley in Leeds. 'We haven't taken the call on which 3 games he will play. We will have a discussion with him and depending on the series and results and how the series is heading. I am sure he is very well aware of as well,' Gambhir said. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'It is difficult to replace someone like Bumrah but we have enough quality. Like I said in the Champions Trophy, it gives an opportunity to another player to put their hands up," he added. India enter the series under the leadership of new Test captain Shubman Gill , who has taken over the reins following Rohit Sharma's retirement from red-ball cricket. The England tour marks the beginning of India's campaign in the ICC World Test Championship 2025–27 cycle. The five-Test series will be played at historic venues — Headingley, Edgbaston, Lord's, Old Trafford, and The Oval — between June and August. 'A particularly special feeling': Andy Flower hails Virat Kohli, RCB after historic title win This series not only marks a major overseas assignment but also the beginning of a new era for Indian cricket. Mayor Sadiq Khan calls on WWE to bring WrestleMania to London
Image via WWE London Mayor Sadiq Khan has once again publicly pitched the idea of bringing WWE 's biggest annual event, WrestleMania, to the British capital. In a recent interview during a CNBC panel at SXSW London, Khan made a direct appeal to WWE Chief Content Officer Paul 'Triple H' Levesque, saying, 'Triple H, if you're watching, we want WrestleMania to come to London. ' This isn't the first time Khan has championed the idea. He previously held talks with Levesque and WWE President Nick Khan in July last year. But his latest statement has reignited discussions about whether the spectacle dubbed the 'Super Bowl of Wrestling' could finally move beyond North American shores. London as the ideal WrestleMania destination Khan positioned London as the ideal host, calling it the 'sporting capital of the world.' Backing his claim, he pointed to the city's long-standing history of hosting major global events - from Wimbledon and the Premier League to American football matchups and the 2012 Olympics. 'If WrestleMania came to London, we wouldn't just have a great weekend - we'd have a festival,' he said. 'A celebration featuring WWE legends, current stars, and the next generation of talent.' WWE In London? Triple H and Nick Khan Talk WrestleMania With Sadiq Khan Speculation about London as a potential WrestleMania venue has been ongoing since 2023, when John Cena made a surprise appearance at a WWE event in the city and endorsed the idea. Fans across the UK and Europe have echoed that sentiment, calling for WWE to bring its marquee show to a wider international audience. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Costco Shoppers Say This Wrinkle Cream Is "Actually Worth It" The Skincare Magazine Undo If the move does happen, it would mark the first time in WrestleMania history that the event is held outside North America. WWE's global expansion in full swing The renewed pitch from Khan comes at a time when WWE is rapidly expanding its global footprint. Earlier this year, the company moved its flagship show, Monday Night RAW, to Netflix globally - a major step in reaching new international audiences and strengthening its presence outside the U.S. Recent international premium live events like Clash at the Castle in Cardiff, Elimination Chamber in Perth, and Backlash France have all been received with overwhelming enthusiasm. These successes have shown that WWE can generate sell-out crowds and passionate fan bases far beyond its traditional markets. Khan believes the timing couldn't be better for WWE to take its biggest show to London. 'I think the potential has not been reached,' he said. 'If WrestleMania wants to expand, the obvious place to come is London. We have the infrastructure, the fanbase, and the global spotlight to make it the most successful WrestleMania yet.' As WWE explores new markets and cities, London's persistent bid may be inching closer to reality.
