Indian railways major changes since July 2025
Indian Railways has a provision called emergency quota (EQ) to cater to urgent travel needs of certain categories of passengers. In a move to improve operational efficiency and reduce last-minute disruptions, the Ministry of Railways has issued a fresh circular updating the guidelines for submitting emergency quota (EQ) requests, according to an ET Online report.According to a circular issued by the Ministry of Railways on Tuesday, passengers requesting emergency quota (EQ) seats must now submit their applications a day prior to their travel date. This revised rule is applicable to all train services across the country, reports ET online.According to a PIB release on April 10, 2018, 'In order to meet the urgent travel requirements of High Official Requisition (HOR) holders who are on the waiting list, a limited number of berths have been earmarked as Emergency Quota in different trains and in different classes.'At the time of allotment of berths or seats, emergency quota is first allotted for self travel of high ranking official holders or Members of Parliament, etc., strictly as per their inter-se seniority in warrant of precedence. If requests from other departments are also considered, the remaining quota will be allocated based on various factors such as the purpose of travel, like government duty, family bereavement, medical emergencies, job interviews, and the status of the passenger."Emergency quota request for all the trains leaving between 0000 hours and 1400 hours should reach EQ cell up to 1200 hours on the previous day of journey," the circular said."Emergency quota request for all the remaining trains leaving between 14.01 hours and 23.59 hours should reach EQ cell up to 1600 hours on the previous day of journey," it added.Note that requests received on the same day as the train's departure will not be accepted.According to the circular, requests for trains departing on Sundays or public holidays must be submitted the day before the scheduled departure.'The requests for the release of accommodation in trains, for which the emergency quota is to be released on Sundays or clubbed holidays after Sundays, should be given during office hours on the previous working day,' the circular stated. The railway board has proposed preparing the reservation chart eight hours before the departure. For trains departing before 1400 hours, the chart will be prepared the previous day at 2100 hrs itself. From July 1, 2025, authorised agents will be restricted from booking tickets during specific time slots to prioritise bookings for individual passengers.Starting July 15, 2025, all Tatkal tickets booked at computerised Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters and through authorised railway agents will require an extra layer of verification through OTP (One-Time Password) authentication.Tatkal tickets purchased via IRCTC's official website and mobile app will only be accessible to individuals who have successfully authenticated Aadhaar from July 1, 2025.

‘Serious hygiene issues in India…not racist to address': US Youtuber says he fell ill after eating at 5-star hotels

American Youtuber Tyler Oliveria recalled his India trip where he claimed to have faced hygiene issues after eating at 5-star hotels which 'source eggs from a filthy chicken farm' located next to a mountain of trash. He said he suffered four types of Salmonella due to it and was not doing racism to address the matter. Tyler got involved into whataboutery when an Indian woman called out foreign tourists, especially white travellers, for what she described as deliberately going to most 'unsanitary trains and buses' and "living worse than the way underprivileged people in India live' while visiting India to reinforce negative stereotypes. She added they go to unhygienic locations and comeback to post about how 'pathetic' India is. 'During my trip to India, I ONLY ate in 5 star hotels and still contracted 4 types of Salmonella. The hotel apparently sourced their eggs from a filthy chicken farm right next to a literal mountain of trash. There are serious hygiene issues that must be addressed in India. It is NOT racist to address the poor quality of life most Indians are subjected to while the upper caste insulates themselves from reality,' Tyler said. Many remarked in the comment section that he was 'defaming' the country. To put an end to criticism of what he described, the youtuber went on to share his medical reports as well. He further reacted to a user's comment, 'The 5 star hotels were about $100 a night. It was budget travel relative to American standards. Ambani has a billion dollar tower overlooking the slums. Your anger is misplaced.' Tyler didn't stop here and later shared a video showcasing 'largest chicken & egg market next to trash-infested landfill...' in Delhi. He mentioned, 'It smells pretty bad here. Look at those flies just eating away. The shrimp I ate at the hotel from here probably right.' Another confirmed, 'all from here'. He shows 'blood on the floor, bunch of flies, rats' and can be heard saying his cameraman was coughing due to the condition there. ( couldn't independently verify the authenticity of the video)

AC coach or general compartment? Overcrowded train in Katihar leaves passengers fuming

If you thought booking an AC 3-tier ticket guaranteed peace and privacy, think again. A video of the Sikkim Mahananda Express—where unreserved passengers allegedly stormed an AC coach at Katihar station—has gone viral, and it's chaos on wheels. The viral video has raised fresh concerns about Indian Railways' ability to manage crowd control and passenger safety. The clip, originally posted by the X handle 'ILoveSiliguri', with the caption read, 'Despite being an AC coach, it turned into a packed general compartment, raising serious concerns about railway management.' Watch the video here: As the video picked up steam online, Indian Railways' 'Railway Seva' issued the standard regret note and asked for details via DM. 'We regret the experience you had. Please share your journey details (PNR / UTS no.) and Mobile no. preferably via DM to enable us to take immediate action,' Railway Sena said in a post on X. The response added that the issue had been escalated to the Katihar division. However, this video didn't go well with users as some of them commented: "So what exactly are we paying reservation charges for?" One of the users also said, "No matter how empty a train is, once it passes through Bihar, there's not even space left to place your foot. Seriously, the kind of chaos Biharis create on trains is unbearable — they barge into every coach, whether it's AC or sleeper. It's a complete mess." Another said, "At some point Railways has to have trains that do not stop at Bihar... Let them have an all General class a all standing ."
