AC coach or general compartment? Overcrowded train in Katihar leaves passengers fuming
The viral video has raised fresh concerns about Indian Railways' ability to manage crowd control and passenger safety.
The clip, originally posted by the X handle 'ILoveSiliguri', with the caption read, 'Despite being an AC coach, it turned into a packed general compartment, raising serious concerns about railway management.'
Watch the video here:
As the video picked up steam online, Indian Railways' 'Railway Seva' issued the standard regret note and asked for details via DM.
'We regret the experience you had. Please share your journey details (PNR / UTS no.) and Mobile no. preferably via DM to enable us to take immediate action,' Railway Sena said in a post on X. The response added that the issue had been escalated to the Katihar division.
However, this video didn't go well with users as some of them commented: "So what exactly are we paying reservation charges for?"
One of the users also said, "No matter how empty a train is, once it passes through Bihar, there's not even space left to place your foot. Seriously, the kind of chaos Biharis create on trains is unbearable — they barge into every coach, whether it's AC or sleeper. It's a complete mess."
Another said, "At some point Railways has to have trains that do not stop at Bihar... Let them have an all General class train...even better...have a all standing ."

Indian Railways To Revamp 5 Nashik Stations Ahead Of Kumbh Mela, Know More
Last Updated: With a Rs 1,011 crore boost, five railway stations in Nashik are getting a big makeover to manage massive pilgrim rush during Simhastha Kumbh Mela. Indian Railways has announced a major revamp of five key stations in Nashik district – Nashik Road, Devlali, Odha, Kasbe Sukene, and Kherwadi. Approved by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Rs 1,011 crore plan aims to improve passenger facilities and train handling capacity in time for the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela. As per TOI, during a review meeting, top railway officials including Minister of State Ravneet Singh Bittu, evaluated detailed proposals presented by Central Railway's senior team. Which Stations Are Getting Upgraded? Devlali Station Devlali, located near Nashik Road station on the Mumbai side, will see the addition of three new platforms. Two of them will manage traffic from Mumbai and Nashik separately, while the third will cater to passing trains. The station will also get six new lines – including pit lines, sick lines, and stabilising lines – for better train maintenance and parking. Nashik Road Station With space limitations, the focus here is on adding two parking lines. Platform 1 will be extended to fit 24-coach trains, and Platform 4 will be upgraded to serve trains from both directions. This station will become a key holding area during the mela, with five new stabilising lines and a third platform. During non-mela periods, Odha will be used for agricultural and goods transport. Kasbe Sukene & Kherwadi Stations Kasbe Sukene's platform will be extended to handle 22-coach trains, double the current capacity. Kherwadi will get two new platforms to accommodate 24-coach trains. What Other Facilities Are Being Added? Every station will be equipped with a special 'Mela Tower'—a hub for CCTV surveillance, announcements, control rooms, security, and large holding areas for pilgrims. Wider foot overbridges will also be built for safer and quicker movement. When Will It All Be Ready? About half of the work has already started. The rest will begin soon, with land acquisition likely from January 2026. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Woman travelling alone on late-night train praises surprise safety check by female cops: ‘Moments like this…'
A woman travelling alone from Mumbai to Surat shared how two women police officers made her journey feel safer during a late-night train ride. Purvi Jain took to LinkedIn to recount the incident, which has since gone viral, drawing appreciation from across the internet. A late-night train journey felt more secure when female cops ensured the safety of a solo traveller.(LinkedIn/Purvi Jain) (Also read: Passenger lies on luggage rack in Indian Railways coach, internet in disbelief: 'Bro needs to hesitate') In her detailed post, Jain wrote: 'I realised how far our country has come when two women police officers looked out for me on a late‑night train. Yesterday, while I was travelling alone on a late‑night train from Mumbai to Surat, two women police officers entered my compartment at around 11 pm and asked, 'Seat 38 - Purvi?' A bit confused, I told them I was Purvi. They stopped, checked whether I was comfortable, and asked if I needed any help. Then they gave me a helpline number to call if I ever feel unsafe.' A simple act that speaks volumes She further added that this had never happened to her before, despite being a frequent traveller. 'Later, I learned they were checking on me because I was travelling alone. The elderly couple sitting next to me were just as surprised. They said their granddaughter often travels alone, and gestures like this make them feel reassured.' Reflecting on the experience, she noted, 'That small moment made me reflect on how much India's railways — and the country overall — have improved. From Vande Bharat trains to seamless online ticket bookings (even Tatkal, thanks to a faster verification process), travel keeps getting smoother.' Acknowledging there is still a long way to go, she wrote, 'We're not perfect, and we're certainly not yet on par with developed nations. But moments like this — women officers ensuring solo female passengers feel secure, smooth digital ticketing, and many other small changes — show real progress is happening, even if it's one step at a time.' Take a look here at the post: Comments praise the initiative The post received widespread praise from fellow users. One person commented, 'Yes! Happened with my mum once she was travelling alone. They even accompanied her when she changed trains.' Another added, 'Thanks for sharing this story. Glad to hear about this progress.' A third user wrote, 'Well said Purvi,' while another noted, 'From the post and comments below it is clear that this is not a one-off incident. Certainly a very praiseworthy initiative from Indian Railways and RPF.' Other responses included, 'That's super amazing!' and 'This positiveness should be admired.'
