Penang cops nab two loan shark syndicate members over alleged arson attacks

GEORGE TOWN: Two men believed to be members of a loan shark (ah long) syndicate have been arrested on suspicion of involvement in arson attacks on three houses and nine vehicles resulting in RM300,000 in damages.
Penang deputy police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said in a statement that the local men both in their 20s, were arrested in separate raids around the state on July 3 by the Penang Commercial Crime Investigation Division team.
"The men were arrested as they were believed to be involved in an incident where a house was sprayed with paint in Tanjong Tokong on June 30.
"During the investigation, the suspects confessed to their involvement in the fire that destroyed three double-storey terrace houses, five cars, and four motorcycles in Taman Tasek Gelugor Utama on the mainland, on June 24 (2025).
"The incident resulted in about RM300,000 in losses.
"The suspects are believed to be involved in five cases of spraying paint on premises which are under investigation, as well," he said in the statement on Tuesday (July 15).
Comm Mohd Alwi said during the arrests they confiscated a motorcycle, a pair of spot rims and a helmet among other items.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 436 of the Penal Code for arson.
"If convicted they face a prison sentence of up to 20 years and a fine," he said.
He then urged the public to come forward to the police if they are being harassed or have received threats from individuals or loan shark syndicates.
"This will allow us to take appropriate action," he said.
It was reported on June 24, 2025, that three terraced houses, five cars, and four motorcycles were destroyed in an early morning fire in Taman Tasek Gelugor Utama.
Penang Fire and Rescue Department Assistant Director of Operations John Sagun Francis said the fire department received an emergency call reporting the blaze at 4.52am.
"The fire was extinguished at 5.59am and no casualties were reported in the incident," he said.

KUANTAN: A clerk attempting to post a RM68,000 bail after his identity was allegedly linked to a fake insurance claim ended up losing RM126,500 of his savings to fraudsters. The 56-year-old victim from Kuantan only realised after six months that he had fallen victim to an insurance scam. Acting Kuantan police chief, Superintendent Mohd Adli Mat Daud, said the incident began in November last year when the man received a phone call from an individual claiming to represent an insurance agency. "The caller alleged that the victim's name had been misused to file fraudulent insurance claims. The call was then transferred to two other individuals posing as a police officer and a prosecuting officer. "The victim was informed that he had to pay RM68,000 in bail to settle the case. He made three separate transactions through a cash deposit machine into three different bank accounts," he said in a statement today. Adli said the victim transferred a total of RM126,500 from his savings between Dec 5 last year and June 1 this year. He said that the victim realised he had been scammed when he was no longer able to contact the individuals involved and lodged a police report yesterday. Adli advised the public not to panic or share personal information when receiving calls from unknown individuals. The public are advised to verify account numbers at before making any transactions.

SEREMBAN: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has obtained a court order to remand a woman for seven days until July 22 to investigate her for allegedly providing false information to claim a total of RM55,000. The suspect, in her 20s, was detained when she arrived for questioning at the state MACC office around 9.30pm on July 15. The woman, who is a clerk at a tour company in Kuala Lumpur, had allegedly submitted documents containing false details involving a company credit card payment claim for hotel bookings. A source said the suspect was believed to have committed the offences between March 2023 and February last year. "The suspect is believed to have submitted company credit card payment claim documents containing false details for hotel bookings on official company business for personal gain," he said. When contacted, state MACC chief Awgkok Ahmad Taufik Putra Awg Ismail confirmed the case, adding that it was being investigated under Section 18 of the MACC Act.

'Geng Upik' member jailed five years

KOTA KINABALU: A man who was recently convicted of drug trafficking has been sentenced to five years' jail for being a member of the organised crime group 'Geng Upik' between 2015 and 2023. Zulkahar Dusing, 30, changed his plea to guilty today before High Court judge Datuk Dr Lim Hock Leng, after three witnesses were called. He was convicted under Section 130V(1) of the Penal Code, which provides for a prison sentence of up to 20 years. The court ordered Zulkahar to serve the custodial sentence effective March 1, 2024, the date he was charged in court. Zulkahar was on trial together with Rahman Burijin, 44, and Jaisalfian Jaineh @ Zaini, 45 since yesterday. The remaining two will continue their trial until July 18. According to the facts of the case, investigations revealed the accused had played a role as a member of 'Geng Upik' in drug trafficking activities alongside other members, to gain material benefits for the group. The investigation also revealed that 'Geng Upik' was involved in drug trafficking activities connected to several serious offences, including two cases in Tawau and one in Manggatal. On July 10, Berita Harian reported that Zulkahar was sentenced to 30 years and 12 strokes of the cane after he was found guilty of trafficking 738.6 grammes of Methamphetamine on May 3, 2023, in Tawau. In total, 15 individuals have been charged in connection with the 'Geng Upik' case. Thirteen of them had pleaded guilty including the group leader Datuk Maslan Sani, 42. Maslan was sentenced to five years' imprisonment after pleading guilty to being a member of the organised crime group. Another 12 individuals were each sentenced to three years' imprisonment after pleading guilty to an alternative charge of aiding the organised crime group. The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutors Datuk Nazran Mohd Sham, Lina Hanini Ismail, Siti Hajar Mat Radzi, and Nur Ainaa Ridzwan. Counsels Shahlan Jufri and Mohd Luqman Syazwan Zabidi Md Zain represented the accused.
