With ‘Tudum,' Netflix Shows Its Growing Appetite for Live Programming
Netflix is counting on devoted fans of 'Stranger Things,' 'Squid Game' and 'Wednesday' to tune in to its streaming service on Saturday night. But they won't log in to see new episodes of those most popular shows.
Instead, viewers will be greeted with sneak peeks and cast reunions, as part of Tudum, an occasional in-person marketing event for Netflix that the company has turned into a streamed variety show. Think marketing as entertainment.
'We're calling it the can't-miss party of the year,' said Marian Lee, Netflix's chief marketing officer. 'There's going to be a lot of surprises.'
The event illustrates Netflix's growing appetite for streaming live events. In just the past year, the company has lured giant audiences to the fight between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson, two National Football League games on Christmas Day and a roast of the former quarterback Tom Brady. And it has plans to do much more. Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano will get a rematch in July at Madison Square Garden as part of an all-female boxing card, and the N.FL. will return to the service again on Christmas.
The first two Tudum events were held in São Paulo, Brazil, in 2020 and in 2023. Thousands of Brazilians waited in line to attend those multiday events. The one on Saturday, though, will be held in Los Angeles, at the Kia Forum, starting at 8 p.m. Eastern. The 9,500 tickets, which went on sale on May 9 for $25 to $75, sold out in a week.
That is not unusual for large fan gatherings like Tudum. Thousands descend on San Diego each year for Comic-Con, probably Hollywood's largest marketing convention, and Disney has created its own version with its D23 confabs.

After ascending to stardom in 2016, he had never dipped below 65 yards per game until 2024, when his 823 yards came out to just 51.4 yards per game. His profile has never been higher, of course, in part because of his romance with pop icon Taylor Swift. ... a relationship that is in part the reason the subject of retirement comes up. But ... And the only player on defense. The 6-6, 310-pounder has anchored the Chiefs' defensive line since 2016 and has already put together a historic career. PFF revealed their rankings for the defensive tackle position and Jones reigned supreme above all the rest, ranking first among the top 32 interior D-linemen in the NFL. "What more is there to say about Chris Jones?" the article read. "The future first-ballot Hall of Famer was once again the highest-graded interior defender in the NFL in 2024 (90.2). That makes it 88.0-plus marks in seven of his nine NFL seasons. His 1.69 PFF WAR over the past three years is by far the most among interior defenders." In Kansas City's last two Super Bowl wins in 2022 and 2023, Jones put together two of his best pass-rushing seasons with 15.5 and 10.5 sacks respectively. Last offseason, he signed a hefty five-year, $158 million contract that deservedly puts him among the highest-paid defensive players in football. Jones may get outshined by the likes of Mahomes and Kelce on occasion ... but the term "future first-ballot Hall of Famer" does not get thrown around lightly. However, 823 yards is still nothing to sneeze at. Such has been the high level of Travis' play that we have become accustomed to that 823 yards is considered a down year. As for Kelce, as he enters Year 13 in the NFL, it appears he is still as spritely as ever as training camp comes into view.
