
P.E.I. exporters looking to adapt as Canada-U.S. trade war begins
The North American trade war of 2025 has officially begun with Canada hitting back against the U.S. after President Donald Trump imposed punishing 25 per cent tariffs on virtually all incoming Canadian goods just after midnight.
In response, Canada hit back with an initial $30 billion in tariffs on U.S. goods exported to this country, with the promise to add another $125 billion more in retaliatory measures in three weeks' time if the U.S. tariffs haven't been lifted.
Ray Keenan, co-owner of potato processor Rollo Bay Holdings in Souris, said his company has been working to ensure shipments continue moving smoothly.
"We're in the process of getting some paperwork done with custom brokers to facilitate the movement," he told CBC's Island Morning.
"We're also in constant contact with our customers, who depend on us. We've been part of the supply chain in this province for over 100 years. So this just doesn't go away in one night, because we are an integral part of their system."
He noted that many American buyers rely on an affordable supply of Canadian potatoes. Without them, spuds would have to come from elsewhere, likely the western U.S., where higher freight costs could drive up prices.
"We'll see what happens in the next 24, 48 hours for sure," Keenan said.
Beef industry watching closely
Russ Mallard, president of Atlantic Beef Products, said the beef industry has yet to see any immediate effects but it remains on high alert for potential impacts.
"Once we understand what we have to adapt to, I think that as a country, we'll adapt," Mallard said.
Mallard said he's also preparing for the potential that the exchange rate could help mitigate some of the tariffs' impact. A weaker Canadian dollar could make exports slightly more affordable for American consumers.
"Beef is still required in the U.S. If the exchange rate and the demand for beef goes up to such a point where domestic beef costs more, then perhaps our beef will not stop going into the States," he said.
Mallard recently returned from a trip to Washington, where he joined industry groups and politicians advocating for Canada's interests. He said the goal was to convey to stakeholders the potential economic damage of the tariffs.
Both Keenan and Mallard believe rising prices in the U.S., especially for products like eggs because of flock culls related to avian flu outbreaks, will likely fuel inflation and lead to growing dissatisfaction among American consumers. That would include farmers, many of whom likely voted Republican, and "that's going to send a message," he said.
"We're hoping that if he won't listen to anybody from Canada — which he probably won't — he may listen to his own base," Mallard said.
"They're always going to be our neighbours, and eventually this too will pass."
Shifting away from U.S. not easy: CFIB
On Tuesday, interim P.E.I. Liberal leader Hal Perry urged the provincial government to take action. In a news release, he called for the immediate removal of American alcohol from provincial liquor store and outlet shelves and the cancellation of the NHL deal. He also emphasized the need for a clear strategy to address the tariffs' impact.
Both Keenan and Mallard also believe governments must step up to support Canadian businesses and protect jobs.
They said it's crucial more than ever to remove interprovincial trade barriers, including eliminating the cost of crossing the Northumberland Strait by bridge or ferry. They also believe Canada should strengthen trade relationships beyond the U.S., looking to markets such as the European Union and Mexico.
However, shifting away from the American market will not be easy, said Frédéric Gionet, director of legislative affairs for P.E.I. with the Canadian Federation of Independent Business.
P.E.I.'s largest international export market is the U.S., and many exporters have established relationships there for decades. Moving to other markets is going to be difficult since it costs more to ship overseas, and breaking into new markets means competing with other countries now supplying those goods, Gionet said.
"To make Canada attractive to these markets, we'll need to make sure that our products are the right quality and the right price for these things. So we're going to be competing against many other countries that produce food," he said.
"P.E.I. is going to have to find its niche in this new world — and I don't doubt that it'll happen, there's great products coming out of P.E.I., great quality — but you know, the disruption will be real."
Looking ahead, Gionet said businesses and industrial sectors must prepare for the long-term reality of tariffs.

US-China tariff truce renewed, avoiding near trade embargo
WASHINGTON/BEIJING: The United States and China have agreed to extend their current tariff truce for another 90 days, sidestepping sharp duty increases that were set to take effect this week and giving both sides more time to negotiate on trade disputes. U.S. President Donald Trump said on his Truth Social account that he had signed an executive order delaying higher tariffs until November 10 at 12:01 a.m. EST. China's Commerce Ministry announced a matching pause early on August 12, postponing additional tariffs and delaying trade and investment restrictions on certain U.S. firms announced in April. Without the extension, U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods would have surged to 145 percent and Chinese tariffs on American products to 125 percent, levels analysts said would have amounted to a near trade embargo. For now, the truce keeps U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports at 30 percent and Chinese duties on U.S. goods at 10 percent. The agreement comes just before the seasonal rush of imports for the holiday shopping period, covering goods from electronics to toys. Trump said at a news conference that he has a "good relationship" with Chinese President Xi Jinping and told CNBC last week that if a broader deal is reached, he hoped to meet Xi before year's end. Beijing called the extension "a measure to further implement the important consensus" reached during a June 5 call between the two leaders and said it would support stability in the global economy. Wendy Cutler, a former senior U.S. trade official now at the Asia Society Policy Institute, described the move as "positive news" and a sign both sides are exploring a possible deal that could pave the way for a Xi-Trump meeting this fall. The tariff truce was first announced in May after talks in Geneva, with negotiators meeting again in Stockholm in late July. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has argued that the triple-digit duties imposed earlier this year were unsustainable. All amounts are in thousands of Canadian dollars, except common share or per share amounts or as otherwise noted. Overview Star Diamond is a Canadian natural resource company focused on exploring and evaluating Saskatchewan's diamond resources. Star Diamond holds a 100% interest in the Fort à la Corne Project, (FALC Project, which includes the Star – Orion South Diamond Project, or the "Project"). These properties are in central Saskatchewan, near established infrastructure, including paved highways and the electrical power grid, which provide significant advantages for future possible mine development. The Company also holds a 100% interest in the exploration and evaluation properties and assets of the Buffalo Hills Diamond Project (the "BH Project") located approximately 400 kilometres northwest of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada (see " Corporate Developments"). Fort à la Corne mineral properties The Company currently holds a 100% interest in certain Fort à la Corne ("FALC") kimberlites (see March 26, 2024, news release: Star Diamond Corporation completes acquisition of Rio Tinto's 75% interest in Fort à la Corne Joint Venture) including the Star and Orion South Kimberlites. Recent activities relating to the Star - Orion South Diamond Project and Fort à la Corne mineral properties The Revised Mineral Resources estimate (see July 24, 2024 news release: Star – Orion South Diamond Project Revised Mineral Resources Estimate) will now be incorporated into a re-optimized open pit mine plan for the Project, which will include a re-evaluation of Mineral Reserves and an economic assessment based thereon. It is anticipated that this work will be completed during 2025-26 and will result in an updated Pre-feasibility Study including a revised statement of Mineral Reserves for the Project, if warranted, and an economic assessment based thereon. Buffalo Hills mineral properties The Company holds a 100% interest in the exploration and evaluation properties and assets of the Buffalo Hills (BH) Project. Located approximately 400 kilometres northwest of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the BH Project includes 21 mineral leases covering 4,800 hectares and is a significant and accessible field of diamond-bearing kimberlites, with similarities to the Company's Fort á la Corne kimberlites. The BH Project is located in the Buffalo Hills Kimberlite District, which contains at least 38 individual kimberlite bodies, of which 26 kimberlites are diamond-bearing and a number of which outcrop at surface. Exploration on these kimberlites started in 1996, and small parcels of diamonds have been collected from various exploration programs on many of those considered most prospective. Corporate Developments On May 16, 2025, the Company announced that it reached an agreement with Spirit Resources s.a.r.l. ("Spirit") to provide funding to the Company by way of a private placement of units for gross proceeds of $4,000 and an interim $800 unsecured loan. The loan bears interest at 6% per annum and matures upon the earlier of the private placement and the date falling on the 180th day after issuance of the loan, unless extended by Spirit in its sole discretion. Quarter End Results For the three months ended June 30, 2025, the Company recorded a net loss of $1,450 or $0.00 per share (2024 – net loss of $1,630 or $0.00 per share). The decrease in net loss was primarily due to the following: Exploration and evaluation expenditures decreased to $463 in 2025 (2024 - $913). Exploration and evaluation expenditures incurred during 2025 were primarily due to security and maintenance, continued diamond analyses, and test work for the FALC Project. Corporate development decreased to $19 in 2025 (2024 - $136) due to reduced marketing and publications issued in 2025. Change in derivative liability increased to a loss of $218 in 2025 (2024 - $nil) due to the changes in the fair values of the embedded derivatives of the convertible debentures. Year to Date Results For the six months ended June 30, 2025, the Company recorded a net loss of $2,416 or $0.00 per share (2024 – net loss of $2,516 or $0.00 per share). The decrease in net loss was primarily due to the following: Exploration and evaluation expenditures decreased to $930 in 2025 (2024 - $1,202). Exploration and evaluation expenditures incurred during 2025 were primarily due to security and maintenance, continued diamond analyses, and test work for the FALC Project. Corporate development decreased to $32 in 2025 (2024 - $274) due to reduced marketing and publications issued in 2025. Loss on investment in Wescan Goldfields Inc. decreased to $nil in 2025 (2024 – loss of $58). Unwinding of discount of environmental rehabilitation provision increased to $132 in 2025 (2024 - $65). Change in derivative liability increased to a loss of $218 in 2025 (2024 - $nil) due to the changes in the fair values of the embedded derivatives of the convertible debentures. On June 30, 2025, the Company had $452 (December 31, 2024 - $164) in cash and cash equivalents and a working capital deficit (excess of current liabilities over current assets) of $1,692 (2024 – working capital deficit of $1,017). The increase in working capital deficit was a result of the unsecured loan payable to Spirit and net cash used in operating activities, offset by proceeds received from convertible debentures and sale of shares in Wescan Goldfields Inc. In 2025, the Company initiated the following cost reductions: We have moved our head office to a smaller area in the same building resulting in a 70% drop in our office lease payments; Certain management/employee functions have been reduced or eliminated; and Site costs have been significantly reduced as operations moved to a care and maintenance basis. A budget has been prepared for the completion of the PFS of $3,000 which is subject to the completion of a financing. However, the ability of the Company to continue as a going concern and fund its expenses in an orderly manner will require additional forms of financing. Yukon, Alaska sign agreement to address missing and murdered Indigenous people
WHITEHORSE – The Yukon has signed an agreement with the state of Alaska to address the crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous people. The territorial government says the memorandum of understanding was initiated in April 2024 and was signed in Whitehorse on Tuesday. It says in a news release that the document marks a 'significant milestone' that will strengthen cross-border collaboration. The territory says it will unite efforts and enhance communication to improve safety and better respond to gender-based violence in northern communities. It says the agreement fulfils a milestone under the Yukon's strategy for responding to the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.
