Girl, 9, attacked by flesh-eating PIRANHAS while paddling in scenic lake with mum as ferocious fish gnaw through bones
A GIRL was attacked by a school of piranha fish just moments after taking a dip in a scenic lake in Brazil.
Nine-year-old Yasmin Luis Vieira's foot was mutilated in the savage attack that took place before her mum's eyes.

Mum Janaina Luis Pereira, 31, said the horror unfolded on a day trip to a lake in the Brazilian municipality of Caldas Novas on June 8.
She said the piranhas pounced on Yasmin within seconds of her feet entering the water.
The fish bit off two of her middle toes on her right foot while also injuring her left foot, according to the mum.
Gruesome images show victim Yasmin's wounded feet.
Janaina said: "We went to the lake to have a family picnic. We went to the edge so she could put her feet in the water.
"I heard her scream, 'Mummy, a piranha got my foot'.
"She jumped and got out of the water. When she sat down, I saw that her toes were gone. It was terrifying.
"I never imagined a piranha would do that."
The mum said plenty of families, along with their children, were bathing in the lake at the time of the attack.
She said: 'It's a freely accessible place. There's no fee to enter, but the signage is very poor.

"The area where everything happened is the same one where visitors have free access to the water. There is no isolation or protective barriers."
Paramedics rushed Yasmin to hospital where she was treated for shock and a possible infection and doctors carefully stitched up her mutilated toes.
Her mum said: "She was losing a lot of blood. She was taken to the Mother and Child Hospital and treated immediately."
Yasmin, said to be in intense pain, will soon have to learn how to walk again.
Janaina said: "The pain is constant, she screams a lot. She is sad because she keeps missing something that was ripped from her body.
"As a mother, seeing this is devastating.
"My emotional state is terrible. She tries to be strong, but she is going through a lot of suffering."
Environmental experts are investigating the attack, according to city officials.
Around 30 different species of piranha fish are believed to dwell in the lakes and rivers of South America.
They are known for their razor-sharp teeth - the word 'piranha' literally translates to 'tooth fish' in Tupí, a language spoken by indigenous Brazilians.
Despite their reputation as flesh-eating creatures, piranhas are omnivorous forage fish, meaning they eat most things - from meat, fish and insects to plants.
Attacks on humans are rare, with the majority resulting in minor injuries, often to the feet or hands.

We can't afford for the Iranians to get them. 'We tell [our daughters] that as long as we go to the shelter together, everything is OK. The damage in the house is just material things.' The family's street, in a residential area of Ramat Gan town east of Tel Aviv, was busy with emergency services crunching over shattered glass and other wreckage to reach the building that took a direct hit. It had been reduced to layers of concrete rubble and twisted steel, with an apparently undamaged cabinet hanging incongruously from the remains of the first floor. Two hours after the explosion, rescue teams were still searching through the wreckage for survivors, as a drone buzzed overhead. At the edge of the police cordon Bar, 31, begged to be let back into her building to pick up a few things for her children. It was still standing, beyond the crumpled remains of several cars, but emergency workers said it was too dangerous to enter. A 'completely broken' rape victim took her own life after her family inadvertently took her on a walk past her attacker's home. Ryan Callaghan, 33, horrifically assaulted the vulnerable women and lived on the coastal path the group had coincidentally decided to walk. The victim called a relative to take her home and, shortly afterwards, she took her own life. Newcastle Crown Court heard that in a note she left for her mother, it was 'absolutely clear the rape of her by the defendant was one of the factors which was forefront in her mind'. The victim's mother said: 'There are no words to describe what we've all been through. 'Callaghan's vile act on our daughter was a major factor in her taking her own life. She just couldn't cope with it. 'He betrayed her trust and he left my daughter completely broken by his actions. We are serving a life sentence in the knowledge of what he did. 'She was in crisis at the time she was raped. He was fully aware of that but he didn't care about that or how his actions would add to her trauma. 'He showed no remorse for what he did and no sadness at all for the loss of her life.' The mother said that on the day the victim took her own life, the family had been on a walk to the beach. She said: 'Unknown to us, the route we took took us directly past Callaghan's house. 'Her mood became extremely low. Walking past Callaghan's house tipped her over the edge. 'It was months later we found out where he lived and that day will haunt us forever. 'It's was a shame the jury and everyone in the case didn't get to see the (woman) we all loved. She was loved so much by all who knew her and had so many friends. 'What Callaghan did has been devastating for us all. The pain felt by us, including her little boy, is immeasurable. 'In the note she left behind she asked that her son knows how much she was loved. We will spend the rest of our days making sure he knows that.' Prosecutor Jon Harley said the victim had recently been released from hospital after self-harming and was 'extremely vulnerable'. Mr Harley said: 'There were undoubtedly many contributing factors to her decision to take her own life but it's absolutely clear the rape of her by the defendant was one of the factors which was forefront in her mind. It features prominently in the note she left behind for her mother to find.' Callaghan, of Mowbray Road, South Shields, who has two previous convictions for common assault, was found guilty by a jury of rape. Jane Foley, defending, said: 'He does not accept the decision of the jury but he knows, as things stand, he must do so. 'It's obviously devastating (she) took her own life. She was vulnerable due to a number of factors.' Miss Foley said she was vulnerable due to mental health issues and had self-harmed previously. She added: 'He was not charged with manslaughter, he was charged with rape.' Miss Foley said Callaghan has two young children and it is his first taste of custody. She added: 'There's a very different side and a positive side to this defendant.' Callaghan's sentencing hearing was adjourned until next week, when he will learn his fate.

He initially told officers that he was not involved and then confessed after the presented evidence linking him to de Lima's murder. Paraibá Military Police Diogenes Fernandes told Brazilian news outlet G1 that dos Santos and de Lima had dated for only two months before she called off the relationship earlier this week. 'In a cold manner, he goes to his residence, changes his shirt and returns to the scene of the crime in an attempt to simulate rescue for the victim,' Paraibá Military Police Diogenes Fernandes told Brazilian news outlet G1. 'He confessed to the crime, the murder weapon was seized and he was sent to the local public jail.'
