Sitiawan KFC crash: 73-year-old woman killed, police detain driver for investigation (VIDEO)
KUALA LUMPUR, May 9 — A 73-year-old woman died and seven others were injured after a Volvo XC90 rammed into a KFC outlet in Sitiawan, Perak, last night.
Manjung district police chief ACP Hasbullah Abd Rahman said the crash occurred at around 9.05pm at the traffic light junction in front of the restaurant along Jalan Sitiawan-Lumut.
The XC90 was driven by a 29-year-old man travelling from Kampung Koh towards Sungai Wangi.
'Upon reaching the traffic light intersection in front of the KFC Sitiawan restaurant, the driver is believed to have lost control of the vehicle, veered to the right and crashed into the KFC building.
'The vehicle also struck eight restaurant patrons — comprising seven adults and one child — who were inside the premises at the time,' he said in a statement.
The elderly victim died while receiving treatment at the emergency ward of Hospital Seri Manjung.
The driver suffered minor injuries and has been detained under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

JOHOR BARU, May 15 — A 27-year-old Singaporean Maserati driver claimed trial in the Magistrate's Court here today to a charge of causing the death of a motorcyclist along the Malaysia-Singapore Second Link Highway last week. The accused, Muhammad Irshad Abdul Hameed, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read out before Magistrate Nur Fatin Mohamad Farid. According to the charge sheet, the accused, who is a Singapore civil servant, drove the Maserati in a manner that was dangerous to other road users, causing the death of A Vasanthraj, 32. The accused was charged with committing the act at 6.40pm at Kilometre 0.6 of the Second Link Highway here on May 9. The case was carried out under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving, which provides for a prison sentence of not more than 10 years and a fine of not more than RM50,000. Those found guilty could also be disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving license for a period of not less than five years from the date of conviction, in addition to the driving license being endorsed by the court. The case was persecuted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Amirah Tasnim Saleh, while the accused was represented by counsels Baharudin Baharim and Zarina Ismail Tom. The prosecution proposed a bail amount of RM20,000 with two local guarantors. This came with additional conditions: the accused must report to the nearest police station once a month and surrender his passport to the court. However, Baharudin requested a reasonable bail amount for his client, who is caring for a mother with cancer and has a younger brother still in school. The defence lawyer also requested an exemption from surrendering his Singapore passport to the court, as the accused needs it to carry out his duties as a civil servant in the republic. Zarina added that her client has no criminal record, is not a flight risk, and is willing to cooperate by reporting to a police station here every month. The court then set bail for the accused at RM12,000 with two local sureties. In addition, the accused will have to report to the nearest police station here once a month and have his driving license suspended. The court also set June 10 for mention and submission of documents.

Witnesses put suspected drunk driver's speed at 90-100 mph before fatal St. Paul crash
A St. Paul motorist was under the influence of alcohol and going over 100 mph when he blew through a red light and crashed into a sport-utility vehicle and killed the driver, according to a criminal complaint filed Tuesday. The collision happened just after 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Dale Street and Arlington Avenue. Marvin Martin Scroggins, 42, of St. Paul, was the crash victim and died at the scene, police said Tuesday. Motorist Paw Moo Htoo, 30, of St. Paul, was injured and remained hospitalized at Regions Hospital as of Tuesday afternoon, according to the Ramsey County District Court complaint charging him by warrant with criminal vehicular homicide as a result of operating a motor vehicle in a negligent manner while under the influence of alcohol. Police officers called to the scene at 7:37 p.m. found Scroggins unresponsive and trapped inside his Volvo XC90. The driver's side of the SUV had a 'large, catastrophic impact area' and rested on the front part of a Honda Accord, the complaint says. Scroggins, who was still in his seatbelt, was extricated from the Volvo, which had deployed airbags. Medics worked on Scroggins inside an ambulance, but he was pronounced dead at 8:08 p.m. The Honda had severe front-end damage consistent with having crashed into the SUV, the complaint says. Htoo was seated on the grass and smelled of alcohol. He had blood on his arms and hands, and he did not answer when asked if he needed medics. When asked about the crash, Htoo said, 'I was not driving. I was not the driver,' the complaint says. One witness told police she was driving north on Dale Street and saw the Honda going west on Arlington Avenue at what she estimated to be 90 mph. When the Volvo entered the intersection to go south on Dale Street, the Honda crashed into it without stopping, the witness said. The posted speed limit on Arlington Avenue is 25 mph. Another witness estimated the Honda had been going 100 mph. The driver climbed out the car from the driver's window, the witness told police, adding no one else got out of the car. The witness believed the driver, whose speech was slurred, was trying to leave the scene. Bystanders got him to sit down at the scene. One said he did not stop before approaching the intersection, which had red flashing lights in all directions, and crashed into the Volvo in the middle of the intersection. Officers found nine empty beer cans inside Htoo's Honda. Htoo was transported to Regions Hospital, where he had emergency surgery for his injuries. A blood sample was collected from Htoo for testing by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension; results weren't back as of Tuesday. Preliminary distance and speed calculations by law enforcement indicate Htoo was traveling more than 100 mph at the time of impact, the complaint says.

'Sleeping' policemen must reflect on their actions
Two police officers, who were spotted apparently asleep in a car, have been asked by their force to reflect on their actions. In February, Staffordshire Police said it was investigating after a video was posted on Facebook, in which two police officers appear to be slumped asleep in a car. The vehicle was pictured in Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent, on 10 February, stationary at a junction but with the car lights and the dashboard illuminated. The vehicle was plain white and not branded in police livery, but the force has confirmed that the officers' badge numbers, visible in the video, were consistent with its numbering. The caption of the video read: "Sat at a junction in Fenton KFC.. asleep behind the wheel," tagging local police accounts. A spokesperson said the force's professional standards department carried out a review into the circumstances surrounding the video. "We've spoken to the officers at length to fully understand all of the context behind the video," they said. "The matter is being dealt with through a reflective practice review process."
