Baxter Springs breaks ground on adoption center project
Ground was broken Wednesday morning on the land that will eventually house the Ronald O. Thomas Animal Adoption Center. It's located in the 200-block of W 3rd Street.
Donor dollars are making all of it possible and officials said it's actually been a flawless process. Along with the Thomas Foundation money is also coming from the Ross Hartley Family Foundation and the Dean and Beth Auman family.
This project has been in the works for the past two years.
'There was a definite need. Our current facility only houses about 4 dogs, and this is going to multiply that probably 10 times over, so,' said Sheldon Bales, Baxter Springs Director of Public Works.
'There's so many people dumping off dogs these days. It's — and we can't keep up right now. So this is really a great thing for this town,' said Harold Lee Simpson, Baxter Springs Animal Control Officer.
'We have a lot of good things going here in Baxter. You hear a few negative things, but we've got 99 good things going and maybe one bad thing, and that's what you hear — but we've got a lot of good stuff going on here,' said Kelly Abbott, Baxter Springs Mayor.

Fort Lauderdale police officer injured trying save dog during apartment fire
A Fort Lauderdale firefighter was taken to the hospital after she rushed into a burning apartment to try and save a dog. According to Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue, the fire broke out in the kitchen of the apartment on NW 13 Terrace at NW 8 Street. Fort Lauderdale police were the first to arrive and they were met by two children who said their dog Rocky was still inside. An officer rushed in to try and save him, but she was overcome by the smoke and had to get out. Moments later, firefighters arrived. They went inside and quickly put out the fire while saving Rocky. The officer was taken to Broward Health Medical Center where she was treated for smoke inhalation. The children's mother, who was working at the time, said she received a terrifying phone call from her kids. "My daughter was screaming saying 'The house is on fire, the house is on fire'. I'm like, did you guys call 911? (They kept saying) the house is on fire and we can't find the dog," she said. "I'm just grateful everybody is good, everybody is alive and the dog is alive because they were worried about the dog." Fort Lauderdale firefighters said Rocky appeared to be fine, but was taken to a veterinarian to get checked out. The children were unharmed. They said the fire was mostly contained to the kitchen and since they were able to put it out quickly, the apartment did not sustain a whole lot of damage. The Red Cross is assisting the family.

Michigan Lottery player has a $1 million Powerball prize waiting
A $1 million prize is awaiting a Michigan Lottery player who made an online entry to Monday's Powerball drawing. The Michigan Lottery said the lucky player matched five white balls in Monday's drawing to win $1 million: 08-12-45-46-63. The red number was 24. "A lucky Michigander woke up this morning to news that they won $1 million playing Powerball at said Lottery Commissioner Suzanna Shkreli. "Winning $1 million would be a dream come true for many Lottery players, and I want to be the first to congratulate the player on their big win!" Although there was a "match 5" winner in Michigan and a "match 5 plus power play" winner in Arizona, no one won the Powerball jackpot that required a perfect match on the ticket to all white numbers and the additional red number. All lower-tier prizes in the Powerball game are set amounts. The jackpots grow until someone wins the top prize. The next Powerball drawing is Wednesday night, with an estimated jackpot of $264 million. Tickets are $2 in most participating states, including Michigan. A "power play" option that can boost the lower-level prize amounts is an additional $1. Michigan's winner should contact the Lottery's Player Relations division at 844-917-6325 to make arrangements to claim the prize. Powerball prizes must be claimed within one year from the date of the drawing.
