The 2025 MTN8 tournament: A celebration of PSL football
Today, the Premier Soccer League (PSL) and MTN South Africa are gearing up for an electrifying launch of the 2025 MTN8 tournament, a celebration of 18 seasons of elite football and intense rivalries.
This tournament is the first of the new season and invites the nation to witness the fierce competition among the top eight finishers from the previous season.
The opening round promises to be a spectacle of talent and determination. Defending champions Orlando Pirates FC will square off against Polokwane City in what many anticipate will be a thrilling clash in Saturday's pipe-opener.
Meanwhile, seasoned giants Mamelodi Sundowns will take the fight to Richards Bay, adding to an already pulsating start to the tournament.
In other fixtures, Stellenbosch FC will battle it out with AmaZulu FC, while Sekhukhune United faces TS Galaxy, setting the stage for what could be some of the most memorable moments of the season.
Fans can expect surprises, heartbreaks, and exhilarating football as teams vie for not only the crown but for bragging rights that linger long after the final whistle.
Adding to the excitement this year is MTN's commitment to elevating the competitive spirit with an increased prize pot. The prize money has jumped from R8 million to a remarkable R10 million, the cash prize awarded to the tournament's winning team.
Among the participants, one dedicated supporter will have the chance to walk away with R1 million and earn the prestigious title of 'MTN8 Last Fan Standing!'
But the MTN8 tournament is not solely about the on-pitch action; this year, it also aims to give back to the community. With every goal scored during regular play, MTN has launched the Goals for Charity initiative, where R20,000 will be donated towards a meaningful cause, ensuring that every thrilling moment contributes to making a positive impact off the pitch.
The competitive spirit extends beyond the players as the Last Journalist Standing initiative returns, where one outstanding journalist will be rewarded with R80,000 at the end of the season for their exceptional contributions and insights into the thrilling journey of the MTN8 tournament.
As the PSL and MTN prepare to host this year's tournament, fans are ready to rally behind their teams, tapping into the deep-rooted rivalries that make South African football unique.
With an impressive prize pool and commitments to charitable causes, the 2025 MTN8 tournament promises to create unforgettable moments both on and off the field.

Bradley Grobler's brace fires Sekhukhune United to maiden MTN8 semi-final
Bradley Grobler scored a brace to announce his arrival at Sekhukhune United in style, as Babina Noko came from 2–0 down to beat TS Galaxy 3–2 and advance to the semi-final of the MTN8 for the first time in their history. A prolific scorer with SuperSport United, Grobler was a surprise signing by Sekhukhune, as a number of players stayed on with the new franchise Siwelele United, who bought the status of Matsatsantsa a Pitori. But having previously worked with coach Eric Tinkler, the son of former Moroka Swallows star striker Les Grobler made the move — and immediately showed he is going to be key for Sekhukhune in their quest for maiden silverware in the elite league. On a cold night in the Limpopo capital, with very few having braved the elements to come watch the match, it was the visitors who settled first and duly took the lead just before the quarter-hour mark through Mpho Mvelase, following a free kick that the hosts failed to clear. Young Oratile Mandi wasted a glorious chance to equalise for Sekhukhune, sending the ball high over the crossbar when faced with tap-in inside the box.

Ouaddou praises new Orlando Pirates new signing after clinical MTN8 performance
Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou praised new signing Oswin Appollis' performance following the team's win over Polokwane City on Saturday afternoon at the Orlando Stadium. Goals from Appollis and Patrick Maswanganyi were enough to seal a 2-0 win for the Buccaneers and seal their spot in the MTN8 semi-finals. Having signed 11 new players, Ouaddou started the match with three new signings and all of them impressed on the day. Appollis was a top performer, earning the Man of the Match award. Ouaddou credited his players for supporting the former Polokwane City star. 'I'm happy for him, you know Appollis for a long time,' the Pirates coach told SuperSport after the match. 'When he is surrounded with good players you can even see the best of him, but not only him. 'I want to congratulate all my boys, he took the best man – man of the match because of the collective.' Ouaddou has made it clear that Orlando Pirates' target is to win another MTN8 title. 'So, I think it's a big victory for us but it's not finish. We have to go through and the target is to win the MTN8,' he added. 'Yes, with Orlando Pirates winning every cup- we know it's not easy, but we will give our best to try and win it.' The Buccaneers shift their focus to the Betway Premiership, where they will play Sekhukhune United in their first game next weekend.
