Khelo India Youth Games Day 4: Archers catapult Maharashtra to top; Rajasthan second after sweep of cycling gold

The Hindu07-05-2025

Maharashtra regained its place at the top of the Khelo India Youth Games 2025 Bihar medal charts on Wednesday with a sweep of the six Archery gold medals in Bhagalpur, which countered Rajasthan's surge through a four-gold haul at the Yamuna Velodrome in the Indira Gandhi Indoor Complex in New Delhi.
Maharashtra's gold rush was also aided by Vedant Waghmare who won the boys 50m Rifle 3 Positions shooting at the Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Ranges in New Delhi and another with a victory in the boys 4x100m Medley in the swimming event in Gaya, saw its gold collection increase to 14. It also had 12 silver and 12 bronze medals at the time of writing.
Target Asian Games Group athlete Harshita Jakhar was in the forefront for Rajasthan as its cyclist bagged all four gold on Wednesday. Rajasthan was perched in the second spot with 10 gold, four silver and three bronze medals while Karnataka's twin gold medals in the swimming pool saw it finish the day with a collection of eight gold, 11 silver and three bronze.
Bihar also enjoyed a good day in office, winning six medals, including five in Gatka – a just reward for some smart planning that entailed the hiring of coaches from Punjab, Balraj Singh and Jasbir Singh, to train the Bihar athletes in the run-up to the Games.

Suhani Kumari continued to keep the Bihar banner flying, claiming a third cycling medal in the individual pursuit, adding to the two silver medals she won on Tuesday to help Bihar nudge closer to the double figure mark with four silver medals and five bronze.
Suhani said she has enjoyed competing in the Games and tried her best to inspire her peers to bag more medals for Bihar. The 18-year-old currently trains at the Sports Authority of India National Centre of Excellence in Patiala.
Ujjwal Bharat Olekar and Sharvari Somanath Shende claimed the boys and girls recurve tiles while Manav Ganeshrao Jadhav and Prithika swept to the top of the podium in the compound competition. Maharashtra mixed recurve (Dnyanesh Cherale and Sharvari Somanath Shende) and compound (Ganeshrao Jadhav and Tejal Rajendra Salve) completed the set of six gold medals.
Harshita completed a hat-trick of gold on her Khelo India debut. The 18-year-old has made the Games a memorable one. The Individual Pursuit title ahead of Bhumika (Haryana) added to her growing stature as India's premier endurance cyclists of her generation.
Quite surprisingly, one of Khelo India Games powerhouses Haryana has been slow to make a mark on the medals table. Arjun Singh' 50m Backstroke victory in BIPARD Swimming Pool and Tushar's 66kg class Judo win late in the evening helped the north Indian State gather some steam and increase its tally to a three gold.
At the shooting ranges in Delhi, Madhya Pradesh won both Trap gold on offer. Syed Ahyaan Ali and Poonam Raghuwanshi claimed victories in contrasting styles, the former dominating the boys final while the latter to hold her nerves to beat back Tanisska Senthilkumar (Tamil Nadu) by a one-point margin.

Indian compound archers crash out at World Cup Stage 3

Antalya: Indian compound archers disappointed at the Archery World Cup Stage 3 as none of them managed to reach the medal rounds in the individual and mixed categories here on Friday. India, who finished second behind South Korea with two gold, one silver, and four bronze medals at the previous stage in Shanghai, are yet to open their medal account here. Madhura Dhamangaonkar, the fourth seed and winner of the last World Cup, was ousted in the quarterfinals by fifth-seeded Mariana Bernal of Mexico. Madhura lost 152-159 in the women's individual section. Mariana was consistent throughout, while Madhura struggled to find her rhythm after an opening round of 29 out of a possible 33. World champion Aditi Swami also exited in the last-eight stage, going down 147-152 to Mexico's second-seeded Andrea Becerra.

Satwik-Chirag bow out of Indonesia Open

Jakarta: India's top men's doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty bowed out of the Indonesia Open Super 1000 tournament after losing to Malaysia's Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun in the quarterfinals here on Friday. The former world No. 1 Indian duo, who won the title in 2023, went down 19-21, 16-21 in a 43-minute contest against the flat-hitting Malaysian pair, who notched up their first win over the Indians in five meetings. Satwik-Chirag's loss ended the Indian challenge in the competition. The Indians looked rusty as they struggled with their serve and return against Man and Wee, who won the Malaysia Masters last month and Indonesia Masters in January. The Indians also lacked the discipline in defence and anticipation and were often put in uncomfortable positions and rushed errors throughout the match by the Malaysians.

India eyeing maximum points from Pro League to secure direct WC berth

Amstelveen: The Indian men's hockey team will look to produce its best and earn maximum points from the European leg of the FIH Pro League in a bid to secure a direct qualification to next year's World Cup. The next World Cup will be jointly hosted by Belgium and Netherlands. The Harmanpreet Singh-led side is currently placed third in the FIH Pro League standings with 15 points from eight matches, behind Belgium (16) and England (16). Good results in the upcoming eight matches of the European leg can propel India to the top, which means a direct berth in the World Cup. India played the home leg of the ongoing Pro League in Bhubaneswar earlier this year, where they raked up 15 points with five wins in eight games. In the European leg, first up for India is hosts Netherlands here on Saturday followed by the return leg match on June 9. The Indians will next play Argentina here on June 11 and 12, followed by matches against Australia (June 14, 15) and Belgium (June 21, 22). India will be led by talismanic dragflicker Harmanpreet, while midfield mainstay Hardik Singh will be his deputy. The Indians will take on Belgium at their home turf in Antwerp. Keeping the magnitude of the matches in mind, India have fielded an experienced 24-member squad for the leg. The Indian goal will be manned by Krishan Bahadur Pathak and Suraj Karkera, while the defence will be handled by the likes of Amit Rohidas, Harmanpreet, Jugraj Singh, Jarmanpreet Singh, Sanjay and Nilam Sanjeep Xess among others. The midfield will be led by former skipper Manpreet Singh with current vice-captain Hardik, Vivek Sagar Prasad, Nilakanta Sharma, Shamsher Singh, Raj Kumar Pal and Rajinder Singh also doing duty in the middle. India boast of a strong strike force in Gurjant Singh, Abhishek, Shilanand Lakra, Mandeep Singh, Lalait Kumar Upadhyay, Dilpreet Singh and Sukhjeet Singh. Chief coach Craig Fulton has opted for experience instead of trying out youngsters.
