KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Convention Bureau (SCB) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Noredah Othman was honoured with the Patwa Gold Award for Individual Excellence in Mice and Destination Management 2025 at ITB Berlin. The award, presented during the 25th Patwa World Tourism and Aviation Leaders' Summit on March 5, recognised her outstanding contributions to tourism and destination management in Southeast Asia. Organised by the Pacific Area Travel Writers Association (Patwa), the annual awards celebrate excellence across the global travel and tourism industry. Despite the Sabah Convention Bureau being officially established only last year, Noredah's leadership has been pivotal in positioning Sabah as a rising Mice destination. Businessmen jailed for involvement in ‘Geng Upik' crime group

KOTA KINABALU: Two businessmen, including a 42-year-old Datuk, were sentenced by the High Court on Thursday to five and three years in prison respectively for their roles in the organised crime group 'Geng Upik'. Datuk Maslan Sani pleaded guilty to being a member of the group and was handed a five-year jail term, while Nelson Yen Yee Chung, 47, was sentenced to three years for assisting the group's operations. Both men were ordered to begin serving their sentences from their arrest dates in December 2023, with the court taking into account their early guilty pleas and genuine remorse. The court heard that Maslan, identified as a key leader, coordinated the group's drug trafficking activities from 2015 until his arrest in Penampang on Dec 25 last year. The world No 5 defeated the 25th-ranked Indonesian pair 21-12, 21-17 in a match lasting 33 minutes. A tougher challenge now awaits the Malaysian husband-and-wife team, who have booked a last-eight clash with Thailand's world No 6 Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Supissara Paewsampran tomorrow. Dechapol-Supissara have been in strong form at all the BWF tournaments this year. Soon Huat and Shevon are still chasing their first title of the season, having fallen short in the early rounds at most tournaments. No further action after RM6.7 million lost to coffee vending machine investment scheme

PETALING JAYA: Investigations into a coffee vending machine investment scheme that purportedly led to investors losing some RM6.7 million has been classified by prosecutors as requiring no further action (NFA). Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan said 101 reports had been lodged over the scheme from January to April, with complainants saying they lost a total of RM6.7 million. He said the victims were given detailed explanations and representations about the investment scheme, with the promise of high returns, Bernama reported. They then joined the scheme and made payments to the bank accounts with which they were provided. 'The victims were unsure whether the investment was legitimate. Initially, they received some returns, but over time, the payments stopped,' said Hussein. While the cases were probed for cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code, the deputy public prosecutor's office eventually decided that no charges for fraud-related offences would be filed. Hussein advised the complainants to pursue civil action, particularly to contest any breach of the agreement they had signed and to recover their investments.
