Shedeur Sanders preseason debut: LeBron James, Deion Sanders and others were loving Browns QB's 2-TD performance

Yahoo2 days ago
It was a very good night for Shedeur Sanders' cheering section.
With Joe Flacco resting and two other quarterbacks hurt, the Cleveland Browns rookie received a starting opportunity in Friday's preseason opener despite operating as QB4 in training camp. The results were encouraging, with 138 yards and two touchdowns on 14-of-23 passing.
His first touchdown pass was particularly impressive, threading the needle to Kaden Davis to take advantage of a muffed punt from the Carolina Panthers.
Sanders entered training camp with as much as attention as we've ever seen for a fifth-round pick. He was last year's Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year at Colorado and was considered a likely first-round pick, but infamously fell to 144th overall. While there were later shots about his conduct in pre-draft interviews, many believed his performance on the field warranted a far higher selection.
One of those people was LeBron, who began taking a victory lap before halftime.
Sanders' father and former coach Deion was also quite happy, as you would expect.
Many current and former players were also ready to anoint Sanders as an NFL-ready starter.
And then there were media members who were impressed by what they were seeing, just maybe a little more reserved in their praise.
If there was a consensus loser on the Browns roster from the night, it might have been Dillon Gabriel. The former Oregon quarterback was taken two rounds before Sanders in the draft — which was a surprise in itself considering not many scouts saw starting potential for the 24-year-old — and was ahead of Sanders on the depth chart going into the game.
That may no longer be true between Sanders' performance on Friday and Gabriel's struggles in training camp. Gabriel has also been dealing with a hamstring injury since last weekend, but he suddenly might have some work to do to solidify his future in Cleveland.
Overreactions to preseason games are a time-honored tradition in the NFL. Maybe that's what happened Friday, but Sanders entered the game needing to look like a potential starter and that's what he did. It's hard to take away from that, especially when he made a few throws that wouldn't have looked out of place for the league's best.
At the very least, Sanders made the next week of Browns training camp a lot more interesting.

Phillies going back to facing the National League after MLB record 21 interleague games in a row

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Philadelphia Phillies are finally going back to facing their own league. Philadelphia wrapped up an MLB record of 21 consecutive interleague games with a 4-2 win Sunday against the Texas Rangers to complete a three-game series sweep. The Phillies finished 13-8 in that span, and are 24-15 overall against American League opponents this season. According to the Phillies, the previous MLB record was 15 in a row 'done by hundreds of times by other clubs.' Their game Monday night at Cincinnati will be the first for the Phillies against a fellow National League team since a 2-1 win at San Diego on July 13, the last game before the four-day All-Star break. All seven of the Phillies' series since the All-Star break have been against AL opponents, accounting for nearly half of the 48 interleague games they will play all season. They have three more interleague series, all at home, against Seattle, Kansas City and then Minnesota to wrap up the regular season. ___ AP MLB:

Nationals beat Giants 8-0 and spoil Justin Verlander's 3,500th career strikeout

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — CJ Abrams homered and the Nationals spoiled a milestone achievement by San Francisco's Justin Verlander on Sunday as Washington beat the Giants 8-0. Josh Bell and Paul DeJong had three hits apiece to highlight a 17-hit day for Washington. James Wood had a pair of two-run doubles as the Nationals won a series at Oracle Park for the fourth straight season. Verlander (1-9), the three-time Cy Young Award winner who has struggled in his first season with the Giants, struck out the side in the first inning and became the 10th pitcher in MLB history with 3,500 strikeouts. The milestone mark was the lone bright spot for the 42-year-old Verlander, who was unbeaten in five career starts against the Nationals before Sunday. He allowed 11 hits and five runs with six strikeouts and a walk. MacKenzie Gore (5-12) had 10 strikeouts and pitched six scoreless innings for his first win since July 9. Cole Henry, PJ Poulin and Clayton Beeter each retired three batters to complete the three-hit shutout. Abrams started Washington's offensive onslaught in the second inning with a two-out home run off Verlander that hit the foul pole in right. That came three pitches after Wood doubled in a pair of runs. Wood also connected for a two-run double off Spencer Bivens in the seventh. Key moment The Nationals seized the momentum with three consecutive hits with two outs that led to four runs in the second inning. Key stat Three of the hits allowed by Verlander had an exit velocity of 103.9 mph or faster. Up next Giants ace RHP Logan Webb (10-8, 3.24 ERA) faces the Padres in San Diego on Monday. Nationals RHP Cade Cavalli (0-0, 0.00) pitches against Royals LHP Bailey Falter (7-6, 4.14) on Monday in his second start since 2022. ___ AP MLB:
