Primoz Roglic wins Volta a Catalunya title as late charge denies Juan Ayuso
A four-time Vuelta a España champion, Roglic (Red Bull-Bora Hansgrohe) prevailed in the final 20 kilometers to win the decisive 88km (54-mile) seventh stage in Barcelona and clinch the overall title, denying Ayuso victory in the city of his birth.
UAE Team Emirates' Ayuso had entered the final day in the lead following a sixth stage that was shortened because of extreme wind. He ended 28 seconds behind Roglic in second place, and 53 seconds in front of another Spaniard, Enric Mas of Movistar, who finished third.
'Beautiful, I had great fun here,' said 2023 Volta winner Roglic, who will now turn his focus to preparing for this year's Giro d'Italia, which begins on 9 May. 'I'm ready, the legs are ready so I was pretty much enjoying this week.'
Mikel Landa (Soudal-QuickStep) finished fourth in the general classification, with France's Lenny Martinez (Bahrain Victorious) in fifth place. Laurens De Plus (Ineos Grenadiers) was sixth overall after finishing second to Roglic on Sunday's stage.
Britain's Simon Yates finished eighth in the final stage, 19 seconds behind Roglic, and ninth in the general classification, one minute 46 seconds adrift of the winner.

The Guardian recently claimed Liverpool, along with their rivals Arsenal and Manchester City, remain 'attentive' to the situation, prepared to swoop in if tensions heighten further over the summer. And a new update by Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague states City have now ended their pursuit of Rodrygo due to Savinho staying put, which provides Liverpool with an additional boost if they hope to land the 24-year-old. It would not be the first time Liverpool have looked to secure his signature. In 2017, before Rodrygo's transfer to the Santiago Bernabeu a year later, then-Reds boss Jurgen Klopp tried his utmost to bring the winger to Anfield. According to the forward's agent, Klopp even got on a flight to meet the teenage wonderkid personally. But Rodrygo opted to remain with his boyhood club, Santos, and break through into the first team, which he was able to do the following year. Later explaining his failed move, Rodrygo said: "We didn't close the deal because I didn't want to. I wanted to stay at Santos even though the offer was very good. "The pathway they promised me would also have been very good for my career. I was going to finish my studies in England to prepare for European football. Liverpool will need to shell out to sign Rodrygo now, with the Brazil international under contract until 2028. His fee may be pushed even higher by competition from other clubs such as Premier League rivals Arsenal, whose need for a world class left winger – Rodrygo's preferred position – is well known. While Los Blancos in recent weeks have appeared content to keep Rodrygo, their interest in Arsenal defender William Saliba is said to have seen them make a sensational swap deal offer. The Gunners are keen to add a winger and Marca claim Real tried to tempt them into a move, having previously weighed up signing Saliba next summer or for free in 2027. However, that offer was immediately rejected by the Gunners. It is understood that the defender remains happy in London and isn't considering a move at the current time. Max Verstappen appeared to make an eerie premonition in relation to his great friend and former team-mate Daniel Ricciardo during an interview back in 2024. The racing drivers partnered for Red Bull between 2016 and 2018, and it was here that they encouraged each other to success on the track, but also developed a close bond away from it. 'Daniel and I, of course, go a long way back,' Verstappen once said to Sky Sports F1 about his Australian team-mate. 'We have always had a great relationship, great friendship, a lot of respect for each other as well, so he's just a great guy.' During an interview with The Project in 2024, the ever-humble Aussie driver, Ricciardo, even invited Verstappen down to his farm in Western Australia to check out his collection of Honda 110cc dirt bikes. In response to the invite, Verstappen appeared to joke that if the pair got on the bikes, one of them might suffer an injury. It comes after Ricciardo was admitted to hospital this weekend following an accident on a dirt bike in north Queensland. Planet F1 reported that the eight-time Grand Prix winner was riding through Daintree National Forest when he suffered a collarbone injury. He is thankfully understood to be in good spirits following the accident and has been undergoing treatment for the injury. His comment didn't stop Ricciardo, who continued: 'We would ride Honda, little 110cc dirt bikes. That is what we'd be doing all day.' But Verstappen quipped back: 'And then we call Red Bull and we're like: 'Argh, we just had a shunt. We can't do the next four races because Daniel's collarbone has gone!'' 'No, don't say that!' Ricciardo responded. Ricciardo was released by Racing Bulls following the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix, following a disappointing run of form during the season. Helmut Marko had explained that the Australian was not 'showing the killer instinct' he had once exhibited during his career. Even amid that difficult season, Ricciardo received the support of his good mate, Verstappen, who had notably offered up his support after the Aussie crashed out of the Japanese Grand Prix in April. 'I think Max has grown into a very… obviously a great driver, but a very mature young man,' the Australian said. 'He's always been very appreciative of our friendship and supportive. 'Even after Japan this year, I was getting quite a lot of stick, and he was one of the only guys who sent me a text and said: 'Mate, keep your head up, we know what you're capable of. Don't listen to the noise'. So, I respect and appreciate him a lot.' The Australian is now adjusting to life after Formula One, claiming that he was hoping to become more grounded and that he had found it difficult to adjust to a new way of living away from the rock-and-roll lifestyle that comes with travelling the world and competing in racing's premier circuit. 'I've lived this crazy, high-speed life for so long, and I just settled into a little bit of stillness,' Ricciardo explained during an interview at Ray White's Connect Conference on Monday. 'I suddenly wasn't always surrounded by a ton of people giving their opinions and thoughts.' 'I've had a lot of time, I've done some hiking. I was in Alaska a few weeks ago and didn't get mauled by a grizzly, which was a bonus. 'I've been trying to figure out who I am other than this race car driver. 'I've come to appreciate the little things more and the meaning of the importance of family and friends. 'I've always been driven, and that sometimes leads you to being selfish, so I'm trying to learn to be a bit more selfless and become a better listener.'

The five-time Grand Slam winner claimed the title in Cincinnati in unfortunate fashion on Monday night, with his opponent Jannik Sinner forced to retire from the match after just five games. World number one Sinner, who defeated Alcaraz in the Wimbledon men's singles final last month, later explained to fans that he had been struggling with illness since Sunday. 'I'm super sorry to disappoint you,' said the Italian star. 'From yesterday I didn't feel great. I thought that I would improve during the night. It came up worse. I tried to come out and make it at least a small match but I couldn't handle more. "I'm very, very sorry for all of you. I know some of you on Monday maybe had to work or do something else, so I'm very, very sorry.' In a classy response to Sinner's withdrawal, Alcaraz consoled his rival and wrote: "Sorry Jannik" on a TV camera, before describing him as a "true champion". Speaking after the match, the 22-year-old said: "Well, yeah it is not the way I want to win matches, to win trophies and I have to say sorry. I can't understand how [Sinner] feels right now. With a $1 million (£750,000) prize on the line, the competition boasts a stellar line-up including Wimbledon women's singles champion Iga Swiatek, 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic and 45-year-old former world number one Venus Williams. Matches at the event will involve three short sets consisting of four games, with no advantage played at deuce. Meanwhile, if both teams have won four games in a set, a 10-point tie-break will be played, rather than a third set, with the winning team the first to reach 10 points. While all eyes are set to be on Alcaraz and Raducanu - particularly amid rumours of a potential romance between them - it was feared that the Spaniard would be forced to pull out given the rapid turnaround he faced after the final in Cincinnati. However, he has vowed to be there for the British star as they take on Jack Draper and Jessica Pegula in a blockbuster opening match. "The scheduling isn't the best, playing tomorrow," Alcaraz said after Monday night's final. "But the concept of the tournament, I love it. "I'm going to have so much fun playing with Emma.
