Primoz Roglic gunning for Giro d'Italia as Tadej Pogacar's absence leaves door open

Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe's Primoz Roglic celebrating as he crosses the finishing line to win the 7th and final stage of the 2025 Volta a Catalunya cycling tour of Catalonia race, a 88.2 km loop between Barcelona and Barcelona, on March 30, 2025. PHOTO: AFP MILAN – Primoz Roglic is hunting his sixth Grand Tour triumph at the Giro d'Italia and will have the chance to snatch the title from Tadej Pogacar with his superstar compatriot sitting out a gruelling three-week race. Despite being one of the best road cyclists of his generation, Roglic has been in the shadow of all-conquering Pogacar ever since being beaten by his fellow Slovenian to the 2020 Tour de France in gut-wrenching fashion. But the 35-year-old is a strong pick to claim the pink jersey for the second time as a Grand Tour specialist backed by a powerful Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe team, which includes 2022 winner Jai Hindley and 2024 runner-up Dani Martínez. 'The goal is just to reach my best shape. The results will be what they will be,' said Roglic of his season back in February. 'I don't know how fast all the other best guys will go, you know, but looking at myself, what I can strive for is to try to build myself into the best Primoz that there was... Inside, I still feel 20.' Roglic is gunning for both the Giro and the Tour in 2025, with the latter still a thorn in his side after giving up the chance of a lifetime on the penultimate stage in 2020. He looked in fine fettle when he won the Tour of Catalonia in March, pipping home favourite Juan Ayuso on the final stage in Barcelona. Ayuso will be one of Roglic's key rivals on the Giro, the young Spaniard – and Pogacar's teammate at UAE Team Emirates – already a winner in Italy this season with success at the week-long Tirreno-Adriatico. But the challenge awaiting both at the Giro start line in Albanian town Durres on May 9 will be far harder than anything else they have experienced this season. In total, the 2025 Giro will feature 52,200m of climbing, over 10,000m more than the 2024 edition, over the 3,413km of riding towards Rome where the final stage will honour deceased Pope Francis with an unprecedented ride through the Vatican. Riders will depart Albania, where controversial Italian-run migrant processing centres became operational in October, following a difficult third stage which starts and finishes in Vlore, before riders snake their way up mainland Italy from Lecce in the deep south. Almost all of this year's extra 10km of climbing come in the two stages before the climax in Rome, with a punchy stage 19 testing riders with three category one climbs in the 166km between Biella and Champoluc. The penultimate stage 20 is the scene of the highest Colle delle Finistre climb which features 8km of gravel roads, before the peloton reaches Sestiere near Italy's alpine border with France. Heavy snowfall in April caused concern that the Colle delle Finistre climb would have to be removed from the race, but roads have been cleared. UAE Team Emirates XRG regains lead in Volta a Catalunya

UAE Team Emirates XRG's Juan Ayuso continued his close battle with Primož Roglič (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe), taking the upper hand in an intermediate sprint and reclaiming the leader's jersey by a margin of just 1 second, heading into the final weekend of the Volta a Catalunya. Elsewhere at Coppi e Bartali, Igor Arrieta of the UAE Team Emirates XRG took a solid second place on stage 4 behind the solo arrival of Ben Tulett (Visma-Lease a Bike). There was movement in the final 20km from veteran climber Rafał Majka, who put in a strong attack on the penultimate climb of the day, taking with him the Belgian duo of Jarno Wildar (Lotto) and Mauri Vansevenant (Soudal Quick-Step). But as the steep Valico Rio Chiè climb approached, it was Arrieta who came to the fore. The Spaniard followed the right wheels and showed his strength as the slopes reached their toughest. Crossing the line in second behind the day's winner, Arrieta moves into fourth place in the general classification, just 23 seconds down on the race lead of Tulett with a stage to go.

Primoz Roglic wins Volta a Catalunya title as late charge denies Juan Ayuso

Primoz Roglic made a late charge to take the lead from local favourite Juan Ayuso and win the Volta a Catalunya for a second time on Sunday. A four-time Vuelta a España champion, Roglic (Red Bull-Bora Hansgrohe) prevailed in the final 20 kilometers to win the decisive 88km (54-mile) seventh stage in Barcelona and clinch the overall title, denying Ayuso victory in the city of his birth. UAE Team Emirates' Ayuso had entered the final day in the lead following a sixth stage that was shortened because of extreme wind. He ended 28 seconds behind Roglic in second place, and 53 seconds in front of another Spaniard, Enric Mas of Movistar, who finished third. 'Beautiful, I had great fun here,' said 2023 Volta winner Roglic, who will now turn his focus to preparing for this year's Giro d'Italia, which begins on 9 May. 'I'm ready, the legs are ready so I was pretty much enjoying this week.' Mikel Landa (Soudal-QuickStep) finished fourth in the general classification, with France's Lenny Martinez (Bahrain Victorious) in fifth place. Laurens De Plus (Ineos Grenadiers) was sixth overall after finishing second to Roglic on Sunday's stage. Britain's Simon Yates finished eighth in the final stage, 19 seconds behind Roglic, and ninth in the general classification, one minute 46 seconds adrift of the winner.
