Indonesia unveils US$1.5b stimulus to revive economy after slowest growth since Covid
JAKARTA, June 5 — Indonesia began rolling out a US$1.5 billion (RM6.4 billion) stimulus package Thursday to boost consumer activity after South-east Asia's biggest economy posted its slowest growth in more than three years in the first quarter.
The archipelago nation's economy grew 4.87 per cent from a year earlier in the first three months of 2025 — a sluggish rate for the developing country last seen during the Covid-19 pandemic in mid-2021.
President Prabowo Subianto has drawn criticism for his economic policies, including slashing US$19 billion from the government budget to fund a new sovereign wealth fund.
The new stimulus measures include discounts for train, plane and ferry tickets as well as toll subsidies to boost tourism.
The government will also disburse additional social aid, while giving cash transfers to low-income workers and discounts on unemployment insurance premiums.
A finance ministry spokesperson told AFP the programme would come into force on Thursday, after the measures were announced earlier in the week.
Finance minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said Monday the package would spur economic activity, with the incentives in force during the school holidays.
'With this stimulus and various acceleration of the government programmes... we hope that in the second quarter, economic growth can still be maintained at close to five per cent,' she told a press conference.
The Indonesian economy has been roiled by US President Donald Trump's threatened 32 per cent tariffs, among Asia's highest.
Indonesian stocks saw their biggest fall for more than a decade after the US leader's 'liberation day' announcement in April.
Jakarta remains in talks with Washington over the tariffs before a 90-day pause concludes in July.
It has promised to buy more US products to narrow its trade surplus with Washington, including wheat, liquefied natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas. — AFP

Ringgit ends marginally lower on stronger US dollar index
KUALA LUMPUR : The ringgit closed marginally lower against the US dollar today, amid a stronger US Dollar Index (DXY) as traders await US nonfarm payroll (NFP) data tonight, says an analyst. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Afzanizam Rashid said the DXY gained 0.14% to 98.884 points as the markets await the NFP data tonight, expecting payrolls to increase by 126,000 in May, down from 177,000 in the previous month. 'The ringgit versus the US dollar exchange was around RM4.22 to RM4.23 today,' he said. Compared to yesterday, the ringgit depreciated slightly by 0.09% to RM4.2310. 'This week, the ringgit has performed well as it has gained 0.7%,' he told Bernama. Meanwhile, SPI Asset Management managing partner Stephen Innes said that as US-China tariff tensions subside and foreign capital continues to flow into Malaysian debt and foreign exchange deposits, the ringgit is gaining stronger structural support. 'Foreign investor interest remains strong, suggesting that any ringgit weakness driven by the US dollar is likely to attract buyers swiftly,' he said. At 6pm, the local currency stood at 4.2270/4.2360 against the greenback, easing from yesterday's close of 4.2245/4.2295. At the close, the ringgit traded mostly higher against a basket of major currencies. It rose against the Japanese yen to 2.9324/2.9390 from yesterday's 2.9495/2.9531 and appreciated versus the British pound to 5.7212/5.7334 from 5.7301/5.7369. However, the ringgit eased vis-a-vis the euro to 4.8268/4.8371 from 4.8235/4.8292. The local currency also traded mostly higher against most of its Asean peers. It edged higher versus the Singapore dollar to 3.2862/3.2934 from 3.2881/3.2922, gained against the Thai baht to 12.9599/12.9947 from 12.9925/13.0138 and inched up vis-a-vis the Philippine peso to 7.58/7.60 from 7.59/7.61. However, it fell against the Indonesian rupiah to 259.5/260.2 from 259.3/259.8.

New tourism projects to ease Semporna congestion

KOTA KINABALU (June 6): The Tourism, Culture and Environment Ministry has proposed two major projects aimed at retaining tourists in Tawau. Its minister, Datuk Seri Panglima Christina Liew, said one of the projects is the Tawau Tourism Jetty which will allow ferries to transport tourists between Tawau and Semporna on a fixed schedule. This initiative aims to encourage tourists to stay overnight in Tawau while easing congestion in Semporna. Christina noted that Semporna, a favorite destination among Chinese tourists, is facing congestion due to its popularity for diving. The long travel distance from Tawau Airport to Semporna has also led to traffic accidents. The other project is the development of Tawau Hill Park which will see the construction of chalets, guided tours and a Pangolin Research Centre to attract eco-tourists and provide overnight options in Tawau. The project is expected to begin by year-end. The Floating Club House at Gaya Island. In addition, Christina said Sandakan will also be promoted, with funding allocated for wildlife sanctuaries such as the elephant sanctuary to ensure balanced tourism development. 'Sandakan's wildlife attractions cater to a different segment of tourists, so facility upgrades are necessary,' she said at the launch of the Floating Club House at Gaya Island today. Christina disclosed that Sabah has recorded 1.18 million visitor arrivals from January to April this year, marking a 17.3% increase compared to the same period in 2024. 'We are optimistic that tourist arrivals will continue to grow in the coming quarters, especially with improvements in transportation, logistics, food and entertainment,' she said. Christina expressed confidence that the Sabah Tourism Board's 2025 target of 3.5 million tourist arrivals is achievable. She highlighted that tourists from China, South Korea, and even France are among those contributing to the growth, with tourism operators investing heavily in new facilities to accommodate the expected increase — particularly from China. Earlier in her speech, Christina described the launch of the Floating Club House at Gaya Island as a milestone in Sabah's tourism evolution. 'This represents strategic collaboration between the public and private sectors, aiming to elevate high-value tourism in Sabah,' she said. She praised Lazy Cat International Travel Service Co. Ltd. for their substantial investment in Sabah's tourism sector, including luxury yacht services, cultural tourism ventures, and marine transportation enhancements via their local subsidiary, Cheetah Transportation Sdn Bhd. The Floating Club House, uniquely constructed atop the sea, offers sustainable luxury with facilities for dining, leisure, and scenic appreciation — setting a new benchmark for marine-based tourism experiences in the state. Penang councils urge MCMC probe into viral TikTok videos alleging corruption, launch investigations
GEORGE TOWN, June 6 — The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has filed a report with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) urging an investigation into two viral TikTok videos containing allegations of corruption and double standards involving the council personnel. In a statement today, MBPP said that four city councillors — Tan Soo Siang, R. Harikrishnan, Muhammad Khairul Mohd Ali, and Datuk Abdul Razak Abdul Rahman - also lodged a police report against the individual who uploaded the videos. 'MBPP is deeply disappointed by the videos circulating on TikTok. The content includes numerous false and biased claims that are not based on accurate facts or data. The videos amount to slander and misrepresentation of the council,' the statement read. MBPP said that it will not hesitate to take legal action against the content creator or any party attempting to tarnish the council's reputation without credible evidence. The videos in question accuse MBPP of accepting bribes in exchange for allowing foreign nationals to operate businesses and claim that MBPP enforcement officers apply double standards in their operations. In a related development, the Seberang Perak City Council (MBSP) said that it has launched an internal investigation into another viral video that allegedly shows one of its officers engaging in corrupt practices. According to MBSP, a meeting was held with the business owner involved to gather detailed information about the incident. The council emphasised that a full internal inquiry is underway to address the allegations made in the video. 'MBSP strongly urges the business owner to make an official report to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission if there is genuine evidence of corruption involving MBSP staff,' the statement read. The council also reiterated that it does not tolerate any misconduct related to corruption or abuse of power among its personnel. The viral video, which runs for two minutes, features a man alleging that MBSP officers abused their powers at his friend's business premises. The video includes claims of extortion, threats against customers, wrongful detention of foreigners, and even an incident in which a local man was allegedly slapped after being mistaken for a foreign national. — Bernama
