Charges laid in driving under suspension incident that knocks senior off scooter
Around 12:45 p.m. Tuesday, Chatham-Kent police said an SUV was exiting a gas station parking lot on Grand Avenue when it struck a mobility scooter that was travelling on the sidewalk.
The scooter operator, a 70-year-old man, fell to ground. Police did not outline the extent of injuries, if any.
The driver failed to remain at the scene, according to police, who were able to identify and locate the driver after the incident was captured on CKPS CCTV cameras.
A 50-year-old Chatham man was arrested and charged with:
Failing to Remain at the Scene of a Collision (HTA)
Count 2: Fail to Report
Count 3: Careless Driving
Count 4: Driving while Under Suspension
The accused was released with a future court date of Aug. 20, 2025.

Police seek arsonists for Bradford West Gwillimbury fires

A police car on patrol near Professor Day Drive and Holland Street West saw the smoke and headed over to the school Sunday night. There, both police and firefighters found a portable toilet on fire. Later that night, South Simcoe Police responded to a call about people with a gas can attempting to light things on fire in the same area where the first fire occurred. Once again, police and firefighters arrived and this time found a garbage can on fire with a gas can located nearby. After canvassing the area, witnesses told police about seeing a man and woman walking towards St. Teresa of Calcutta Catholic School. Police are investigating both incidents and believe that they may be related. South Simcoe Police are appealing to anyone with information or video footage from Sunday in the areas of Fieldcrest Elementary School and St. Teresa of Calcutta Catholic School to contact Police Const. Ontario cottage country murder and arson suspect confirmed dead
Mitchell Gray, the 29-year-old man wanted in connection with a shooting and fire in Ontario's cottage country that triggered a shelter-in-place order and police hunt, has been confirmed dead. Article content Gray's body was one of two bodies found inside a home that was set on fire last Friday near the town of Bracebridge, Ont. Article content Article content He died from smoke inhalation, according to a post-mortem examination by the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service. Article content Article content The second body has been confirmed as 59-year-old Anita Gray, who died from a gunshot wound, according to a police statement issued late Wednesday. Article content Article content Police also confirmed the identity of a man found shot dead in the driveway, 60-year-old Paul Gray. Article content Police did not provide details on their relationships, however, local media are reporting the victims are Mitchell Gray's parents. Article content Police responded to shots fired at the family's home shortly after 8 p.m. Friday. When they arrived, one man was found dead outside and the residence in flames. Two more bodies were later located inside. Article content Police issued a shelter-in-place order, alerting local residents they were responding to an incident involving 'a potentially armed individual in distress.' Article content The advisory was lifted just before 2 a.m. Saturday. Police said that although Gray hadn't been located, he wasn't believed to pose a threat to public safety because the individuals involved were known to each other. Article content Police issued a wanted bulletin. As of Tuesday afternoon, Ontario Provincial Police said they were still searching for Gray. 'He remains outstanding,' an OPP spokesperson told National Post. 'We ask that anyone with information about the incident or his whereabouts to contact police or Crime Stoppers.'
