Nintendo aims to match Switch success with new console

The Star2 days ago

TOKYO: Nintendo hopes to match the runaway success of the Switch when its levelled-up new console hits shelves on June 5, with strong early sales expected despite the gadget's high price.
Featuring a bigger screen and more processing power, the Switch 2 is an upgrade to its predecessor, which has sold 152 million units since launching in 2017 – making it the third best-selling video game console of all time.
But despite buzz among fans and robust demand for pre-orders, headwinds for Nintendo include uncertainty over US trade tariffs and whether enough people are willing to shell out.
The Switch 2 "is priced relatively high" compared to the original device, company president Shuntaro Furukawa said at a financial results briefing in May.
"So even if there is momentum around the launch, we know it will not be easy to keep that momentum going over the long term," he warned.
Sales of the Switch, which can connect to a TV or be played on the go, were boosted by the popularity of games like Animal Crossing as a pandemic lockdown pastime.
The Japanese company forecasts it will shift 15 million Switch 2 consoles in the current financial year, roughly equal to the original in the same period after its release.
The new device costs US$449.99 (RM1,911) in the United States, over a third more than the Switch. A Japan-only version is cheaper, at 49,980 yen (RM 1,485 ).
New Switch 2 games such as Donkey Kong Bonanza and Mario Kart World – which allows players to go exploring off-grid – are also more expensive than existing Switch titles.
Most original Switch games can be played on the Switch 2, and some Switch blockbusters such as Zelda: Breath Of The Wild will have enhanced editions released for the new incarnation.
'Super excited'
"People were a bit shocked by the price of Mario Kart World , the first US$80 (RM 339) game that we've ever seen," said Krysta Yang of the Nintendo-focused Kit & Krysta Podcast.
While the company is "going to have to do some work" to convince more casual gamers that it's worth upgrading, Nintendo fans are "super excited", she told AFP.
The Switch 2 will have eight times the memory of the first Switch, and its controllers, which attach with magnets, can also be used like a desktop computer mouse.
Although the new console is not radically different, "a lot of people (are) saying, 'this is what I wanted, I wanted a more powerful Switch – don't mess with a good thing'," said Yang, a former Nintendo employee.
New functions allowing users to chat as they play online and temporarily share games with friends could also be a big draw, said David Gibson of MST Financial.
"It's a way to appeal to an audience which has got used much more to the idea of streaming games and watching games, as well as playing games," he told AFP, predicting that the Switch 2 will break records in terms of early sales.
And success is crucial for Nintendo.
While the Super Mario maker is diversifying into theme parks and hit movies, around 90% of its revenue still comes from the Switch business, analysts say.
Tariff trouble?
Nintendo delayed pre-orders for the Switch 2 in the United States by two weeks as it assessed the impact from President Donald Trump's global assault on free trade.
But its pre-orders have since sold out in the US market and elsewhere, with the company boasting of particularly high demand in Japan.
Furukawa said in May that Nintendo's financial projections are based on the assumption of US tariffs of 10 percent on products produced in Japan, Vietnam, and Cambodia, and 145 percent on China.
"Hardware for North America is mainly produced in Vietnam," he added.
Trump's hefty so-called "reciprocal" tariff of 46% on goods from Vietnam is on pause, while those on China have been slashed.
Tariff uncertainty could in fact push consumers to buy a Switch 2 sooner, because they are worried that the price could go up, Yang said.
Charlotte Massicault, director of multimedia and gaming at the French retail giant Fnac Darty, told AFP that pre-sale demand has been "well above what we imagined".
"For us, this will be a record in terms of first-day sales for a games console," she said.
The Switch 2 is "less of a family-focused product, and more of a 'gamer' product" compared to the Switch, she said.
"That's what Nintendo wanted, and it works." – AFP

In row with Trump, Musk says will end critical US spaceship programme

Trump and Musk's nearly year-long political alliance imploded in spectacular fashion, with the two trading public insults on social media. – AFP photo WASHINGTON (June 6): SpaceX chief Elon Musk said Thursday he would begin 'decommissioning' his company's Dragon spacecraft — vital for ferrying NASA astronauts to and from the International Space Station — after US President Donald Trump threatened to terminate his government contracts. 'In light of the President's statement about cancellation of my government contracts, @SpaceX will begin decommissioning its Dragon spacecraft immediately,' Musk wrote on X. The comments — which the mercurial billionaire later appeared to walk back — came after Trump and Musk's nearly year-long political alliance imploded in spectacular fashion, with the two trading public insults on social media. SpaceX's Crew Dragon — a gumdrop-shaped capsule that flies atop a Falcon 9 rocket and splashes down in the ocean — is currently the only US spacecraft certified to carry crew to the ISS under a contract worth more than $4.9 billion. A variant, Cargo Dragon, delivers supplies, as the name suggests. Following Musk's announcement, NASA spokeswoman Bethany Stevens said on X that the government space agency would 'continue to execute upon the President's vision for the future of space.' 'We will continue to work with our industry partners to ensure the President's objectives in space are met,' she said. NASA had hoped to certify Boeing's Starliner for crewed missions, but that program has faced severe delays. Its most recent test flight last year ended in failure after the spacecraft experienced propulsion issues en route to the orbital lab with its first astronaut crew. The Starliner ultimately returned to Earth empty, while the two astronauts were brought home by SpaceX earlier this year. Crew Dragon's certification in 2020 ended nearly a decade of US reliance on Russian Soyuz rockets to transport astronauts following the retirement of the Space Shuttle program in 2011. American astronauts still fly aboard Soyuz rockets, while Russian cosmonauts ride on Crew Dragons under a longstanding seat-swap agreement. In addition to NASA missions, Crew Dragon also flies private missions — most recently Fram2, which carried tourists over the Earth's poles. The next scheduled crew launch is Tuesday's Axiom-4 mission, which will see a Crew Dragon transport astronauts from India, Poland, and Hungary to the ISS. – AFP donald trump Dragon spacecraft elon musk SpaceX

Petronas to cut 10 pct of its workforce, says Tengku Muhammad Taufik

The number of staff involved in the right-sizing process for Petronas currently stands at around 5,000. – AFP photo KUALA LUMPUR (June 6): Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) is cutting 10 per cent of its workforce to cope with challenging operating conditions, particularly due to falling crude prices. President/group chief executive officer Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik Tengku Aziz said the number of staff involved in the right-sizing process currently stands at around 5,000, and those affected will be notified in stages next year. 'Petronas 2.0 will be run differently, organised differently, will have different work processes, and to move towards that, we have to correct the work process,' he said at a media briefing here yesterday. He said the group aimed for a lean and nimble operation even if oil prices were to reach US$100 per barrel. (US$1 = RM4.23). 'There is a logic, an assumption set, and a projection that backs it up. Over time, we have seen this — those who have tracked our history will know that when the fields were easier, our profit before tax margin was around 35 to 40 per cent. 'Today, it is (between) 25 and 38 per cent. These margins are going to shrink further, and the fields are going to get smaller. So the value-added (Petronas) 2.0 has to transform into an organisation that monetises molecules commercially and competitively, not just at home, but also abroad,' he said. Petronas has based its budget on Brent crude trading between US$75 and US$80 per barrel. The benchmark is currently near US$65, down roughly 13 per cent this year, amid global trade tensions and rising OPEC+ output. The group reported a net profit of RM55.1 billion for the financial year ended Dec 31, 2024, down 31.7 per cent from RM80.7 billion a year earlier, due to lower average realised prices and favourable tax adjustments in 2023. On Petronas Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros), Tengku Muhammad Taufik said Petronas remains open to ongoing discussions regarding its role in the state. On May 21, 2025, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg signed a Joint Declaration stating that Petronas will continue to carry out its functions, activities, responsibilities and obligations under the Petroleum Development Act 1974 (PDA 1974) and related regulations. According to the Prime Minister's Office, key principles have been agreed to support further negotiations between Petronas and Petros. The Joint Declaration acknowledges both federal and state laws, the status of existing agreements, and the need for a cooperative framework between the two parties. Under the declaration, the Sarawak state government has appointed Petros as the gas aggregator effective March 1, 2025. Petronas and Petros will also enter discussions to expand cooperation in meeting Sarawak's gas requirements across several areas. – Bernama downsized Petronas Tengku Muhammad Taufik workforce

Nintendo debuts Switch 2 to strong demand, resale concerns emerge

OSAKA: Nintendo Co. on Thursday released the Switch 2, its first new gaming console in over eight years, with strong pre-order demand fuelling optimism that the device will bolster the company's fortunes, but concerns remain that reselling may distort the set price. According to Kyodo News Agency, the Kyoto-based gaming giant expects to sell 15 million units of the device globally in the current business year through March. Nintendo said in April it attracted larger-than-expected pre-order interest, with some 2.2 million people in Japan applying for a lottery in hopes of securing one at release. The successor to the original Switch, released in March 2017, is priced at 49,980 yen (US$350) for the Japan-only version. The multi-language version of the device is available for 69,980 yen. The new console includes features such as screen sharing and voice chat via a built-in microphone. It also features a larger screen with roughly twice the pixel count of the original Switch and supports 4K output on televisions. Along with the console, the company released the Mario Kart World game, its latest instalment of the popular racing series. In Tokyo, dozens of people who won the lottery lined up in the morning before the opening of an electronics store in the Ikebukuro area. "It's great that players can see each other while playing. I can't wait to go home and play," said Koji Takahashi from Saitama Prefecture, who was first in line after arriving before 6 am. Satoshi Ayame was unsuccessful in the lottery but went to the store's release event to get hands-on experience with the long-awaited console. "I took a half-day off because I wanted to try this so badly," the 39-year-old said. Online stores and auction platforms have tightened measures against resellers, with some banning the sale of the Switch 2. But by midday Thursday, multiple listings had already appeared on Japanese e-commerce site Mercari, priced well above the official retail level. Many of the units on Mercari were listed for between 70,000 yen and 90,000 yen, with one reaching a staggering 800,000 yen. The unusually high prices have drawn public attention and prompted renewed debate over resale practices in Japan's digital marketplaces. Ken Naganuma, a professor at Doshisha University and an expert in e-commerce, said implementing uniform rules is difficult as reselling is not illegal, but added that it is "rational" for companies to act to protect their brand value as resale becomes a "social issue." Reflecting the solid interest in the Switch 2, Nintendo said in May that it expects the company's sales for fiscal 2025 to jump 63.1 per cent from the previous year to 1.9 trillion yen. President Shuntaro Furukawa said it will increase production of the new device in response to the strong demand. The Switch has been one of Nintendo's best-performing consoles, with more than 150 million units sold. However, it has seen declining sales in recent years as the hardware aged after peaking at 28.8 million units in fiscal 2020.
