South Korea says timing of US tariff cut on autos not decided
SEOUL : South Korea's industry minister Kim Jung-kwan said today that Seoul needs to hold further discussions with Washington on the timing of the promised tariff cuts on the country's car exports to the US from the current level of 25%.
President Donald Trump said last week the US will charge a 15% tariff on imports from South Korea, including autos, as part of a deal that eases tensions with a top-10 trading partner and key Asian ally.
The 15% US tariffs on most items coming from South Korea are due to take effect starting from tomorrow.
South Korean automakers such as Hyundai Motor and Kia want the tariff cut brought in swiftly to create a level playing field with Japanese and European rivals.
Separately, Japan's top tariff negotiator Ryosei Akazawa said he would head to Washington this week to press Trump to sign an executive order to bring the cut to tariffs on Japanese auto imports into effect.
In the technology sector, Kim said the countries had agreed to continue talks on online platform legislation to make sure US tech companies were not unfairly treated compared with domestic firms.
'Although the digital issue was not included in the latest agreement, there are major concerns about it among the US government, parliament and businesses,' he said at a parliamentary session.
The minister reiterated that there had been no agreement on the opening of the agriculture market, including beef, rice, fruit and other farm goods as part of the deal.
However, he said the countries will increase cooperation in the quarantine process for fruit and vegetables, which has been cited by Washington as one of the non-tariff barriers that US farmers face.
South Korean finance minister Koo Yun-cheol said at a separate parliamentary session that the US viewed the quarantine process for fruit and vegetables as too slow and asked Seoul to introduce a rational and scientific process.

Dropping Formula One was a mistake, says Sepang boss
KUALA LUMPUR: Sepang International Circuit (SIC) chief executive officer Azhan Shafriman Hanif believes it was a mistake for Malaysia to stop hosting Formula One races here. Shafriman said it is now very difficult to bring back the race to Sepang as there is a long waiting list for a slot on the Formula One calendar. SIC is currently preparing to negotiate a contract renewal for MotoGP hosting rights with Dorna Sports. "We do not want to repeat the mistakes of the past. We let Formula One go and now it is very hard to get it back. I hope we don't make the same mistake with MotoGP," said Shafriman recently. "There is a waiting list to get back in (for Formula One) and of course, the costs are very expensive. We were quoted US$70 million race fees (by owners Liberty Media). "That is for each event (edition of Malaysian GP). That does not include our setup costs which are in the region of RM10 to RM20 million for each event. "In total, it would cost us more than RM300 million to bring back the race (annually). "A lot of people (countries) are queuing so it won't be easy. But if we are really serious about it, then maybe we can start the conversation." Sepang hosted Formula One between 1999 to 2017 but dropped the event due to high organising costs, dwindling global interest in the championship and disappointing ticket sales in Malaysia. Formula One has, however, been given a new lease of life since being taken over by current owners Liberty Media in 2017. The Drive to Survive Netflix series, which began airing in 2019, and the introduction of Saturday sprint races in 2021 has significantly boosted interest in the championship. Shafriman added there is strong interest in bringing back the event to Sepang and believes it could be successful if done the right way. "It is not just SIC that wants Formula One. Many other stakeholders from both the government as well as the corporate sector also want it back," said Shafriman. "We have to look at how Singapore is hosting it. They have everyone on board in making it a success, from the ministries to the corporate sector to the hotels. Everybody contributes. "It has to be like that if we bring it back here." Shafriman, however, stressed that it will take some time to turn a profit if Malaysia does once again host Formula One. SIC last week claimed that the highly popular Petronas Grand Prix of Malaysia (MotoGP Malaysia) provides 6.3 times return on investment for Malaysia based on an economic impact study conducted last year. "It will take time. Even with MotoGP, it took time for us to increase the ROI," said Shafriman. "The important thing is that everyone (stakeholders) comes together. "All this while people view MotoGP and Formula One as SIC's events, when they are actually national events. "We are at the forefront in terms of managing the thing, branding and so on, but essentially they are Malaysian events."

Felcra records RM178m profit, with RM101m payout to participants starting today, says Zahid
PASIR SALAK, Aug 17 — Felcra Bhd has recorded a profit of RM178 million for up to April 2025, showing an increase compared to the previous year. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also the Minister of Rural and Regional Development, stated that of this amount, RM101 million will be distributed to 74,300 participants nationwide in stages starting today. 'I congratulate Felcra Bhd for successfully maintaining a strong performance, with an increase of nearly RM2 million compared to the same period last year. I will be monitoring the profit distribution to all participants across the country,' he said at the 2025 First Interim Distributable Profit Declaration Ceremony for Felcra Bhd participant projects held here today. Also present were Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development Datuk Rubiah Wang and Felcra Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Idris Lasim. In addition, Ahmad Zahid said Felcra Bhd continues to make history in strengthening national food security through the commercialisation of Felcra's MRQ 107 paddy – a local fragrant rice variety that serves as a high-quality alternative to imported fragrant rice. He stated that the Seberang Perak area, covering more than 3,400 hectares and cultivated using modern methods by Felcra, has shown encouraging performance with an average yield reaching eight metric tonnes per hectare annually. 'We expect production to exceed 27,000 metric tonnes of paddy, equivalent to over 16,000 metric tons of rice per year, which can meet the needs of thousands of families. Hopefully, this becomes an example for other paddy farmers,' he said. Meanwhile, Idris said the performance of the first interim distribution for 2025 was influenced by several key factors, including efficient estate management and the implementation of cost-saving measures. 'Through effective approaches in the use of fertilisers, pesticides, and farm inputs, operational costs were reduced by 15 per cent, and yield per hectare increased by 49 per cent,' he said. Idris also informed that Felcra's oil palm projects recorded an average net profit increase of 81 per cent. PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said the two parties had magnified the controversy through the reciprocal actions of both parties 'with their own reasons and motives'. Takiyuddin said they should not involve the police, who would be burdened with unnecessary workload, or the public, who would be drawn into unhealthy and unproductive discussions. He also called on both sides to respect and support the police investigation without adding unnecessary pressure, warning that failure to do so would risk making matters worse. 'An issue originally involving just one person will then spill over, drawing the wider public into a destructive cycle,' he said.
