A landmark movie theater in Kendall is closing for a big change. See what's next

Miami Herald11-07-2025
This summer's film blockbusters 'F1' and the Jurassic dinosaurs may have run their course before The Falls unwraps a reimagined movie complex in its central courtyard.
But it's coming soon to the Kendall shopping landmark, said Regal communication manager Kevan Kerr.
Don't expect just another movie house. Think pub food served at your seat, cushy lounge chairs, a lobby bar.
On Monday, July 14, The Regal UA at The Falls closes for a couple months so that crews can finish revamping the inside and reopen the multiplex as a dine-in theater.
The Falls, which has boasted a multiplex since the mall's opening in 1980, will see its Regal movie house revamped, reopened and renamed the Regal Bistro at The Falls in late summer.
The unveiling should come in time for fans to enjoy the second half of the 'Wicked' musical that's set to open nationwide Nov. 21. When they see Elphaba and Glinda's concluding adventures at the fancier Falls, these movie fans can be noshing on barbecue chicken pizza, and spreading out on roomier seats.
Here's what to know about the upgrades:
How many auditoriums will the new Regal Bistro boast?
The Regal Bistro will still have 12 theaters, but they will contain about half the seats.
Luxury recliners require more floor space than traditional stadium seating, so the capacity in the converted auditoriums will decrease by about half, according to Kerr.
That means the largest theater, Auditorium 8, will go from 302 seats to 144. Auditorium 1 will decline from 94 seats to 45 but gain two spaces for disabled customers. Currently there are 13 handicap spaces spread around the auditoriums. Regal Bistro will increase accessible seating areas to 23.
The closing Regal Falls has 1,296 seats. The revamped Regal Bistro at The Falls will have 767 reclining seats.
According to Regal, the new recliners are dual-motor to adjust headrest and seating positions. Seats in the front row are also getting an upgrade with the addition of lay-flat loungers. Regal calls this forward-most section 'a novel cinematic experience.'
How will the movies sound?
Regal Bistro at The Falls will upgrade its presentation to beam movies via Barco laser projection through Dolby 7.1 surround sound systems.
What high-end food can customers order?
Moviegoers have enjoyed traditional theater popcorn, candy and soda at The Falls for 45 years. You still can get the popcorn and Milk Duds when things turn fancier. But Regal Bistro at The Falls is a dine-in theater concept with servers available in the auditorium to take food and beverage orders from seated guests, Kerr said. Eventually, customers will also have access to the full menu through Regal's mobile app to independently place orders without requiring the attention of a server.
Items on the full-serve menu will include bacon cheddar potato skins, barbecue chicken pizza, brew pub beer cheese bacon burger, chicken BLT and fried pickle spears.
What's the lounge like?
The modern lounge area will serve as the communal hub for theater guests to congregate, chat about what they are about to see or just saw, and includes a full bar serving cocktails and 24 beers on tap. Large screen TVs will be tuned to 'current non-cinema entertainment,' Regal says. Translation: sports and other popular TV fare.
Will there be a box office out front?
Customers stood out front for years in The Falls' open-air courtyard to buy movie tickets from people in the glass- and steel-enclosed box office. These days, that's a thing of the past at most theater chains.
As Kerr explains, modern moviegoers are increasingly purchasing tickets in advance through mobile apps or online before they even get to the cinema, so traditional box office areas are being phased out as theaters are renovated. Loyalty programs like Regal Unlimited allow subscribers to secure tickets covered by paid monthly plans. For guests who still want to wait to get to the theater before buying tickets, the new Falls Bistro will have three digital kiosks in the spruced-up lounge area inside the main doors.
When is The Falls Regal Bistro opening?
The complex's reopening is scheduled for late summer, but a specific date is not yet available. Construction and renovation requires a bevy of permits, Kerr said, so an exact date can't be provided yet.
What can Regal moviegoers do in the meantime?
During the construction period at Regal Falls at 9000 SW 136th St., two nearby locations such as Regal Kendall Village (8595 SW 124th Ave.) and Regal Southland Mall (20505 S. Dixie Hwy.) are available to Regal Crown Club members and Unlimited subscribers who use their apps for loyalty programs.
What happened to Regal's Oakwood in Broward?
Operations ceased at the Oakwood multiplex in Hollywood on July 6, Kerr said. The location is no longer a part of the Regal network. Regal Dania Pointe is a newer nearby option for Broward Regal customers at 128 Sunset Dr. in Dania Beach.

'Mamma Mia!' returns to Broadway after a decade away, bringing the dance party back to New York

NEW YORK -- When the musical 'Mamma Mia!' said goodbye to Broadway a decade ago, there were tears and hugs and tons of applause. In the audience of its last show, one woman wasn't entirely buying it. 'I felt then that it wasn't goodbye forever. I felt we'd be back one day,' says producer Judy Craymer, who had conceived of the show in the 1980s. 'I always hoped.' That one day has become today as the ABBA-fueled, feel-good musical returns to its first home on Broadway, the Winter Garden Theatre. It reopens Thursday night. 'It's like when you go to visit the old place where you went to high school,' says Victor Wallace, who made his Broadway debut in the show in 2012, stayed to the final curtain in 2015 and has returned. 'There's so many backstage stories and people and I'm a little overwhelmed.' Fans have fueled the return of 'Mamma Mia!' to make it among the top earners on Broadway, last week grossing $1.57 million over seven previews, fourth behind only 'Wicked,' 'The Lion King' and 'Hamilton.' 'Mamma Mia!' endured plenty during its first Broadway life — wars, hurricanes, the 2008 financial meltdown, the move to a smaller theater and critics, who never warmed to the show's high-energy sweetness. A hit in London — where it is still playing — 'Mamma Mia!' opened in New York just a few weeks after the 2001 terror attacks when there was deep gloom and anxiety. Christine Sherrill, who recently toured as the show's mom and is now making her Broadway debut in the role, says audiences are responding to another time of stress. 'We're kind of in a time of peril again, where communities are divided. So to be able to go into some of these cities and have 3,000 people — who would never find themselves enjoying the same thing outside of the theater — sitting there all enjoying this communal experience is really interesting.' The show, featuring more than 20 classic ABBA hits, including 'Dancing Queen' and 'Waterloo,' has been a smash in dozens of countries, including South Korea, Italy, Denmark, South Africa and Spain. Craymer sees the data about the new flock of theatergoers and notes this 'Mamma Mia!' is popular with groups. 'There were people that had seen it on Broadway — probably when they were younger — and now coming back in their 20s and 30s and then bringing their daughters or family.' Craymer decades ago approached members of ABBA and made her pitch: Instead of doing a musical about the band, she insisted that their songs help tell an original story. Craymer teamed up with playwright Catherine Johnson, and a story set on a Greek island was born about a young woman who is about to be married and wants her father to give her away. But she's not sure who he is, so she invites her mom's three former lovers to her wedding. The musical prompted Craymer to produce a movie version starring Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth, that became the fifth highest-grossing film of 2008. A sequel, 'Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,' came out a decade later. ABBA's music continues to be the backdrop for numerous popular TikTok trends. In some way mirroring the joy onstage, backstage at 'Mamma Mia!' is a party backstage, too, with milestones celebrated, outings, door decorating contests and gatherings 'Because of the nature of the show, I think it just bleeds into life backstage and that joy that you see on stage, it just overflows into our lives,' says Wallace. Wallace, who started in the musical's ensemble and grew to play the young leading man, Sky, and now is one of the three possible dads, says the show is about friendship, parenthood, hope and second chances. 'It's always surprising how the show surprises you emotionally,' he says. 'It's a great time. It's fun. But I think people identify with these themes and these characters and I think that people are caught off guard as to how the show captures their heart and moves them.' Sherrill looks at the story through a mother's eyes and realizes she's a different person than she was before she had twins. She offers another theme. 'It's a lot about finding your identity,' she says. 'I think that appeals to people on all levels — all people, all levels. Everyone's trying to figure out who they are and what the best version of themselves is. So, I think, that's sort of a universal message that's really playing on people's heartstrings as well, at least mine.'

Defne Özcan: TIME's Girls of the Year List

'I could see a future of me becoming a mechanical engineer. So why couldn't other women and young girls feel the same way?' she says. She decided to change minds by literally taking flight. 'I wanted to create a ripple effect of inspiration.' She enrolled in flight school at 15, and a year later, on October 27, 2024, she found herself taxiing down the runway in a single-engine Aeroprakt-22 by herself. It was a windy day, and she had considered aborting her first solo flight, 'but then I thought to myself: am I ever going to feel 100% ready? Probably not.' Belting out the lyrics from her favorite Broadway musical to soothe her nerves—"Defying Gravity' from Wicked, naturally—she pulled back on the plane's control column and found herself airborne. She dreams of becoming a mechanical engineer like her father, but with a focus on biomedical systems in order to 'make a positive impact in people's lives.' Now that she has defied expectations, she hopes that other Turkish women will be inspired to do the same, in the sky, and in STEM.
