Muslim Law Board Warns Of Contempt Petition Against Centre Over Waqf Portal

The All India Muslim Personal Law Board has taken exception to the Centre's move to activate the Waqf Umeed Portal from June 6. In a statement, the board alleged that the government's move is illegal and amounts to contempt of court since the law backing it - the Waqf (Amendment) Act of 2025 - has been challenged before the Supreme Court.
The statement also appealed to Muslims and State Waqf Boards not to use the portal until the Supreme Court delivers its verdict.
The Muslim Law Board also said it would approach the Supreme Court against the government move by filing a contempt of court petition.
According to the law board, all Muslim organizations have opposed the law, and it has also drawn criticism from Opposition parties, human rights groups and minority communities including Sikh and Christian bodies.
The law board also alleged that though the matter is pending before the Supreme Court, the government has proceeded to launch the portal and made registration of Waqf properties mandatory through it.
The law board has contended that such a move constitutes contempt of court as the very basis of the portal - the validity of the amended Waqf law - is sub judice.
The Supreme Court has heard a clutch of petitions challenging Waqf Amendment Act of 2025.
Last month, the court had reserved its order on the question of interim stay on certain provisions of the UMEED Act of 2025 till it takes a call on the legality of the new law.

Hyderabad: State Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy has said that the Telangana Government was intensifying its fight against Andhra Pradesh's proposed Godavari-Banakacharla Link Scheme and was determined to protect Telangana's water rights. The Minister said that he had written multiple letters to the Centre, exposing serious violations by Andhra Pradesh and demanding immediate intervention. Andhra Pradesh had failed to obtain technical clearances from the Central Water Commission (CWC) and from the Godavari River Management Board (GRMB), Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) and the Apex Council, as mandated under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act (APRA) 2014. No project on inter-state rivers can proceed without these approvals. Andhra Pradesh is brazenly bypassing all statutory mechanisms, he added. Andhra Pradesh misused Sections 46(2) and 46(3) of the APRA 2014 to seek funds from the Union Finance Ministry under the backward regions development clause, Uttam said in an information interaction with the media here on Friday. These sections cannot override Part IX of the Act, which deals with inter-state river water management, requiring technical clearance, inter-state consultations, and Apex Council approval before any project proceeds. Andhra Pradesh had neither shared any proposal with the Telangana government nor provided any DPR or plans for scrutiny by the relevant boards. He noted that despite Andhra Pradesh's multiple letters to the Union Finance Ministry and the Ministry of Jal Shakti seeking funds, no DPR had been sent, and the ministries had merely forwarded Andhra Pradesh's letters to technical bodies like the GRMB, KRMB, and the Polavaram Project Authority (PPA) for comments. This is not due process. It's an attempt to mislead the Centre and push the project without scrutiny. The previous BRS government failed to safeguard Telangana's interests. During the united Andhra Pradesh era, Telangana's rightful share was 724 tmcft, but the BRS government signed agreements that reduced Telangana's share to 299 tmcft while allocating 512 tmcft to Andhra Pradesh. This betrayal laid the groundwork for the current situation. 'They are acting like Goebbels Rao, repeating lies to cover up their betrayal. Even Goebbels himself would be shocked at the level of false propaganda they are spreading', he claimed.

Tight security for Bakrid celebrations
Rajamahendravaram: In view of Bakrid (Eid-ul-Adha) festival on Saturday, elaborate security arrangements have been made across the district, particularly at major mosques and Eidgahs, said District Superintendent of Police D Narasimh Kishore. Speaking after a coordination meeting with religious leaders on Friday, the SP stressed the need to uphold communal harmony and urged everyone to cooperate in maintaining law and order. Any violation of these orders will lead to severe consequences,' he stated. He also mentioned that nodal officers have been instructed to promptly respond to complaints and enforce the Andhra Pradesh Prohibition of Cow Slaughter and Animal Preservation Act-1977, Animal Transport Rules-1978, The Animal Transport (Amendment) Rules-2001 and Slaughter House Rules-2001. Citizens are encouraged to report any information related to cow slaughter or illegal transport of cattle by calling 112. The identity of informants will be kept strictly confidential, the SP assured.

Harish raps Uttam for misleading people on key irrigation projects
Hyderabad: Over the alleged failure to protect Telangana's water interests and favouring Andhra Pradesh, BRS senior leader T Harish Rao on Friday said that while Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy was the brand ambassador of lies, Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy surpassed even the CM. Harish Rao accused them of failing to protect Telangana's water interests while favouring Andhra Pradesh while addressing a press conference at Dubbaka here on Friday. Harish Rao criticised Uttam Kumar Reddy for misleading the people on key irrigation projects. He alleged that the Congress government halted the Rayalaseema Lift Irrigation works initiated by the previous BRS government, only to restart them later for political gains. Harish Rao mocked Uttam Kumar Reddy for meeting Andhra Pradesh's former CM Chandrababu Naidu and then remaining passive while Telangana's water rights were being compromised. He accused the Congress government of using the lowest-ever Krishna River water allocations in state history, depriving farmers in Khammam, Nalgonda, and Mahbubnagar of irrigation. Rao said that under temporary allocations, Telangana received 65 tmcft less water, leaving 6.5 lakh acres parched. Harish Rao demanded answers from Uttam Kumar Reddy, asking why he remained silent while Andhra Pradesh allegedly diverted 400 tmcft of Godavari water illegally. He slammed Uttam Kumar Reddy for failing to prepare for the Babli project despite being the Irrigation Minister. He questioned why the government had not approached the Supreme Court or pressured the Centre to stop Andhra's unauthorised projects. Rao criticised BJP leaders for not speaking up against Andhra Pradesh's alleged water theft. He warned that if the state government did not act, BRS would approach the Supreme Court. Harish Rao accused the Congress government of deceiving employees by forming multiple committees instead of fulfilling promises on Dearness Allowance (DA) and Pay Revision Commission (PRC) benefits. He demanded immediate release of pending DAs and better PRC benefits than those given under the previous BRS government. He dismissed CM Revanth Reddy's claims that Kaleshwaram was collapsing, arguing that projects like Gandhamalla, Mallannasagar, and Ranganayak Sagar depend on it. He challenged the CM to explain how water would reach Gandhamalla if Kaleshwaram was truly defunct.
