Penn State's Thon sets new record, raises more than $17M to help fight childhood cancer

Yahoo24-02-2025
Penn State's IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon broke another fundraising record this year, raising $17,737,040.93 toward the fight against pediatric cancer.
The 2025 total was revealed Sunday afternoon, after more than 700 dancers inside the Bryce Jordan Center sat down for the first time in 46 hours. As each number was revealed for the yearlong fundraising effort, the BJC erupted in cheers — from the thousands of students on the floor to the crowds packing the arena.
This year's efforts beat the $16.95 million raised in 2024 by nearly $800,000. It makes more than $250 million raised by Thon since 1977.
Thon's sole beneficiary is Four Diamonds at Penn State Health Children's Hospital in Hershey, and the money raised ensures that families never see a medical bill or the financial burden of cancer, Thon's website states. Donations also help fund cancer research.
The first night of Thon was headlined by the Grammy-nominated band The Fray, playing hits like 'Look After You' and 'How to Save a Life.' Joe King, the lead singer, raised the spirits of the dancers three hours into the event.
'It's an incredible, incredible cause — we are thankful to be here to participate in this incredible moment,' he told the crowd on Friday night.
On the second day, the pep rally and the kids and teen's talent show were among highlights.
'Thon is more than just a weekend, it's a lifestyle that brings us together,' Sam Coffey, a Penn State alum who's an Olympic gold medalist and National Women's Soccer League player, said in a video message to the BJC.
Later on Saturday night, dancers received a total of 20,938 letters from family and friends. Every dancer got at least one letter, for the biggest total in the event's history.
Sunday featured the emotional 'family hour' where Thon families share their stories, before dancers were told at 4 p.m. that they could finally sit.
The total reveal also included the organizations and individuals that raised the most money toward the Thon 2025 total.
The independent couple that raised the most was Brooke and Jordan Petrone, with more than $51,000 raised.
The commonwealth campus that raised the most was Fayette, with $76,046.43.
The general organization that raised the most was Phi Gamma Nu with $269,881.89.
The Greek organization that raised the most was Alpha Tau Omega and Zeta Tau Alpha, with $529,003.97.
The special interest organization that raised the most was Atlas with a total of $224,275.80.
The committee that raised the most was Thon Family Relations.

James Franklin believes in player leadership on Penn State roster

Player-led culture is the backbone of Penn State's 2025 goals When James Franklin stepped to the podium at Big Ten Media Day, he didn't waste time talking stats or schedules. Instead, he got straight to what really matters in 2025 — leadership. According to him, everything Penn State wants to accomplish this season will come down to the locker room. Franklin suggested a player-led team is always going to be better than a coach-led team. And right now, that's the direction this group is headed. He pointed to how veterans have stepped up, how younger guys are starting to buy into the program's standards, and how the culture feels stronger than ever. He also made it clear this isn't something you can fake. Leadership has to come from the players, not just the captains. It's the day-to-day accountability — the extra reps, the film study, the willingness to speak up when something isn't right. Franklin said when those habits become normal in the locker room, that's when a team becomes dangerous. Franklin talked about the impact of offseason training and how strength coach Chuck Losey and his staff have played a big role in setting the tone. But again, he came back to the players. He mentioned guys like Drew Allar, and recent first-round draft pick Abdul Carter, and others stepping into leadership roles naturally. They don't need to be hyped — they lead by example. He also talked about the leadership council and how they've been actively involved in team decisions. Franklin wants his players to have ownership of this team, and that means letting their voices be heard. From little things like practice structure to big-picture goals, the leaders on this squad are involved. What stood out most is how much Franklin trusts this group. He said there's a different feel in the building. Less drama. More focus. He compared it to some of his best teams in the past, where the players didn't need to be reminded to do the right thing — they just did it. If Penn State is going to reach the Big Ten Championship again or even make a playoff run, it's going to be because the players took it there. Franklin knows his role as a coach, but he's challenging his team to own it from within. And so far, it sounds like they're answering that challenge. For a program that's been on the edge of greatness, 2025 might be the year they finally break through. And if they do, it'll be because the leadership didn't come from the top — it came from the locker room.

32 Things That Happened One Year Ago That Will Seriously Warp Your Brain

The summer of 2024 feels like it was, as the Titanic meme says, 84 years ago. Looking back, it truly was another world/universe, so let's look at what life looked like way back when... Just one year ago, the summer of 2024 kicked off with the Four Seasons Orlando Baby. Moo Deng was born. She fell off hard, no offense. And everyone was trying to do that JoJo Siwa "Karma" dance. Just one year ago, Biden announced he was dropping out. Kamala announced she was stepping in. And Charli XCX had this super viral "kamala IS brat" tweet: "Brat summer" feels like another dimension. A little over 365 days ago, the Paris Olympics kicked off with a Lady Gaga performance. Hot, nerdy pommel horse guy entered our lives last summer. Simone Biles also cemented herself as the greatest of all time. Simpler times! There was the *blessed* pole vaulter. We were sharing the gun guy memes. I personally saw myself more in him: And we had Raygun. I miss her. Oh, and Tom Cruise had that dramatic Olympic entrance/exit thing. In the summer of 2024, just one year ago, Barry Keoghan and Sabrina Carpenter were still dating. "Espresso" was the song of the summer, something we unfortunately don't have now. Wicked wasn't even out yet. And everyone was talking about falling out of coconut trees. Like, this is the stuff people were tweeting: Just one year ago, the hottest MAGA accessory was a bandage on the ear. Jen and Ben officially filed for divorce. And Justin Timberlake got a DUI, and the "ruin the tour" meme was born. Believe it or not, "Hawk Tuah Girl" has only been in your life for a year. She became *popular* in summer 2024. "Very demure, very mindful" was *the* saying. JD Vance couch memes were all over your timeline. And Tim Walz was announced as Kamala's running mate (he also made JD Vance couch jokes). Just ONE YEAR AGO, Lil Jon was the star of the DNC. He did that 50-state roll call. Obama made a Trump small penis joke. And lastly, hope was in the air, like people were truly libbing out. What a time to be alive.

Penn State O-Line holds keys to success

One thing about James Franklin is that he will never stop emphasizing the trenches. At Big Ten Media Day, while a lot of coaches were talking flashy transfers and NIL deals, Franklin stayed true to what's built Penn State's identity the last few years with the offensive line. Even with Olu Fashanu off to the NFL in 2024 and some big names gone, Franklin's message was clear that this 2025 team is still going to live and die up front. He didn't sugarcoat it. He knows it's a new-look group, but he believes it still has the toughness, depth, and accountability to win at the highest level Penn State has reached a point where the O-line room is not just five guys, Franklin said. That's a far cry from where Penn State was just a few years ago. Back then, if one guy went down, the whole unit took a hit. Now Franklin says they can plug and play without a major drop-off. And that matters in a loaded Big Ten where guys in the trenches get banged up fast He also talked about how this group is handling the leadership role. It's now on guys like Vega Ioane and a few younger faces to step up, not just with their play but in the locker room. Franklin made it known that this isn't a rebuild. It's a reload He stressed the O-line's role in unlocking everything else, protecting Drew Allar, giving Kaytron Allen space, and setting the tone for a physical football team You can't have the type of offense we want if the O-line isn't right Franklin said. That's where it all starts. It's not just about blocking either. Franklin wants this group to be nasty, vocal, and physical from the first snap to the last. He called out their ability to set a standard that bleeds into the rest of the team. That mentality that edge is something Franklin's proud of. It's taken years to build and he's not letting it slip now Even with new faces stepping in Penn State's identity in 2025 is staying the same. Big, tough, and dominant at the line of scrimmage. Because for Franklin it's never been about gimmicks or hype. It's about winning the battle up front. And if this O-line holds it down like he believes they can the Nittany Lions will be in position to make serious noise this fall.
