After A Clip Of Amanda Seyfried Covering 'California' Went Viral, She Denied Claims She's Strategically Campaigning For The Upcoming Joni Mitchell Biopic

Yahoo20-03-2025
If you haven't been listening to Amanda Seyfried's cover of Joni Mitchell's 'California' on repeat all this week, then we are living very different lives.
In case you missed it, during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last week, Amanda showed off a fun skill that she learned during the pandemic — playing the dulcimer. While the instrument is not super well known, one of its most recognized players is the one and only Joni Mitchell.
Amanda, despite her nerves, delivered a jaw-dropping cover of 'California,' to the audience's delight. And Jimmy's, if we're going by the look on his face.
Anyway, the clip went mega-viral. It has almost 40 million views on TikTok, and the comments were gushing over Amanda's talent. However, amid all the praise, there was one comment with over 100k likes that read, 'tell me you're auditioning for a Joni Mitchell biopic without telling me you're auditioning…'
Fans of the legendary folk singer will know that a biopic of Joni has been in the works for about two years, and is due to be released around Christmas this year. The film, directed by Cameron Crowe, is also rumored to star Meryl Streep in the title role.
And if you're a Mamma Mia! fan, the prospect of Meryl and Amanda reuniting to play older and younger Joni seems too good to be true. Over the past week, many people online have been speculating that Amanda's cover on The Tonight Show was her throwing her hat in the ring in a bid to win the role of young Joni. But yesterday on the Just for Variety podcast, Amanda put the rumors to rest.
'It was not an audition,' Amanda clarified. 'In fact, I didn't even consider that, which is funny. What I know about that project is that I'm very, very much aged out of young Joni.'
'And yes, I've met Joni. It was years ago. And what a beautiful inspiration, you know? She's wonderful. She's Joni Mitchell. I learned the dulcimer… This was years ago. Way before Cameron Crowe was even born,' she joked. 'I learned a lot of the songs off her Blue album after meeting her. How could you not want to? I'm a musician, like as a hobby. Of course, I sing a little bit in Mamma Mia!, but I do love to play new instruments,' she explained.
And as for Amanda's feelings about the clip going viral, it sounds like she's happy it did. 'It might not be meant to be, but I think it was an organic moment that really had its reach, and because it was organic it's fine with me. It feels really good,' the 39-year-old star said. 'It is all as it's meant to be.'
Well, there you have it. I still need Amanda in more musicals, but I guess I can wait until Mamma Mia! 3. You can watch her full cover of "California" here, and be sure to let me know your thoughts below.

Emmys upheaval: ‘The Late Show With Stephen Colbert' now predicted to win Best Variety Talk Series

Less than a month after CBS shockingly canceled The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, the Emmy race for Best Variety Talk Series has been completely upended. Based on initial Gold Derby predictions following the nominations in July, The Daily Show was favored to win its 12th Emmy in the category, extending its record. But in the weeks following The Late Show's cancellation (and shortly after the third nominee, Jimmy Kimmel of Jimmy Kimmel Live, publicly announced he was "voting for Stephen"), there's a new frontrunner in the race for Best Variety Talk Series. More from Gold Derby Beyoncé finally wins an Emmy after 10 nominations: See all the 2025 juried winners 'Something wholly new': 'Alien: Earth' cast and creators make their Emmy case for the 'ambitious' FX series Drumroll, please! Variety Talk Series Contender Odds 1. Late Show with Stephen Colbert 65.5% 2. The Daily Show 30.9% 3. Jimmy Kimmel Live 3.6% According to the Gold Derby tracking data, The Late Show With Stephen Colbert now has a 65 percent chance of winning the Emmy, compared to a 31 percent chance for The Daily Show, and a 4 percent chance for Jimmy Kimmel Live. That's a stark difference from the last time we checked in on this race, on July 29, when The Late Show had a 26 percent chance of eking out a victory. The Late Show has been nominated in the Best Variety Talk Series category nine times without ever winning. In fact, since Colbert took the reins, the show has never won an Emmy, despite 33 nominations across its decade-long run. That's the second most Primetime Emmy nominations without a win for a series after Better Call Saul, which famously went 0-for-53. Kimmel immediately threw his support behind Colbert. Shortly after news of the cancellation broke on July 17, with Paramount saying it was shuttering Colbert's show due to "purely financial" reasons, the Jimmy Kimmel Live host proclaimed on social media, "Love you, Stephen. F--k you and all your Sheldons, CBS." And then last week Kimmel erected his "I'm voting for Stephen" billboard in West Hollywood. The Daily Show is the reigning champion in this category, and currently rotates hosts among Jon Stewart, Ronny Chieng, Jordan Klepper, Michael Kosta, and Desi Lydic. As a producer of both The Daily Show and The Late Show, Stewart would take home an Emmy if either of those two programs wins Best Variety Talk Series. He has not yet announced his preference via an FYC billboard. In addition to his nightly show, Colbert will also guest star on the CBS crime dramedy Elsbeth, playing — what else? — a fictional late-night talk show host. Filming reportedly took place in New York City in early August, suggesting the role was planned before CBS announced The Late Show With Stephen Colbert will end next spring. Elsbeth stars Carrie Preston as a quirky investigator who works with the police to solve murders. The 2025 Primetime Emmys will be handed out Sept. 14 during CBS' ceremony hosted by comedian Nate Bargatze. Colbert previously hosted the Emmys in 2017. Alan Tudyk says he was cut out of 'I, Robot' press after 'testing higher than Will Smith' with audiences

Tudyk portrayed the primary robot antihero in the 2004 techno thriller, which Smith anchored. Alan Tudyk played a major role in the 2004 techno thriller I, Robot, but you might not know that. His character's popularity was downplayed, Tudyk claims, by the studio formerly known as 20th Century Fox. The Resident Alien star unspooled the story, which does not depict the I, Robot's production house or its star, Will Smith, in a very flattering light, in a July interview on prolific voice actor Jim Cummings' Toon'd In! podcast. "A lot of people didn't know I did Sonny the robot in I, Robot, and there's a reason for that, actually," he explained. "They were doing test audiences with the movie, and they score the characters in this kind of test audience, and I got word back, 'Alan, you're testing higher than Will Smith.'" According to Tudyk, it was as simple as that, and the consequences hit swiftly: "Then I was gone. I was done. There was no publicity, and my name was not mentioned." Entertainment Weekly has reached out to representatives for Smith and Disney, which now owns the rebranded 20th Century Studios. Directed by sci-fi visionary Alex Proyas, who'd previously helmed The Crow and Dark City, I, Robot draws on the complex, techno-paranoiac corpus of famed "father of science fiction" Isaac Asimov. The film stars Smith as a detective in a near-future utopia in which humanity is served by a legion of compliant robots. He quickly discovers cracks in the facade, behind which lies a dark and brutal dystopia in which robots like Sonny (Tudyk) are suffering and are programmed to make others suffer. Tudyk portrayed Sonny via 2004's most cutting-edge voice and motion capture technologies. The morally ambiguous character is deliberately designed as a foil to Smith's Detective Spooner, who is far less trusting of the robot half of society than his fellow humans. But in a canny bit of art imitating life, Tudyk claims Smith's primacy caused him to be shunted into the darkness in much the same way I, Robot's society treats its mechanical characters. "I was so shocked, I was like, 'Wait, what? How do they — nobody's going to know that I —' and [Fox] was like, 'Mhm,'" Tudyk recalled. "It was sad. I put a lot into it, because he had to move like a robot, so I had to move [like a robot].... At the time, I was very upset."The sour memory of studio decision-making may be close to the surface in Tudyk's mind due to a recent bout of the same: Late last month, USA Network canceled Resident Alien, just weeks before it was set to air its season 4 finale — now its series finale. Speaking to EW at San Diego Comic-Con 2025 on the day the cancellation was announced, Tudyk let out a long, pained groan in response. Tudyk's costar, Sara Tomko, joked, "He had just forgotten, then remembered all over again." "I think we hoped there was a possibility we could go on," Tomko continued, but said, "It's just nice to feel like we've offered a solution to ourselves as writers, as a cast, to be able to just say, 'This is where this particular story arc ends. I think fans will be really, really satisfied with that, as we are." You can watch the rest of Tudyk's interview on the Toon'd In! podcast above.
