Tamil Nadu & Maharashtra pairs claim doubles gold

Rajgir, May 8 (UNI) P.B. Abhinand and M.R. Balamurugan of Tamil Nadu overcame an early setback to clinch the Boys' Doubles gold medal at the Under-18 Khelo India Youth Games on Day 3 here on Thursday.
Despite dropping the opening game and trailing 5-8 in the third, the top-seeded duo showed remarkable grit and composure to turn the match around, eventually defeating Assam's
Priyanuj Bhattacharyya and Divyaj Rajkhowa Roy 3-1 in a tense final at Hall No. 1.
Earlier in the day, Maharashtra's Kavya Bhatt and Divyanshi Bhowmick produced a clinical display
to secure the Girls' Doubles gold. In an imperious form throughout the tournament, the pair dispatched West Bengal's Subhankrita Datta and Avisha Karmakar 3-0 to cap a dominant campaign.
In the bronze medal playoff, Atherva Gupta and Sarthak Arya of Delhi staged a spirited comeback after a tense tussle against Kushal Chopda and Sharveya Samant of Maharashtra. The Delhi duo initially held a comfortable 6-2 lead, only to see their opponents claw back and level the score at 6-6.
However, Gupta and Arya held their nerve when it mattered most, capitalising on crucial errors from the Maharashtra pair, who squandered three game points that could have tilted the third game in their favour. Ultimately, the Delhi boys sealed a 3-1 victory to claim the bronze.
In the girls' final, Maharashtra's Kavya Bhatt and Divyanshi Bhowmick delivered a commanding performance to capture the gold, defeating West Bengal's Subhankrita Datta and Avisha Karmakar
in straight games.
Despite the Bengal pair's impressive semifinal upset of the top-seeded Tamil Nadu duo M. Hansini and Ananya Muralidharan, they struggled to maintain that momentum against the clever left-and-right combination of Kavya and Divyanshi.
The West Bengal paddlers briefly threatened in a closely fought second game but failed to close it out, allowing the Maharashtra pair to maintain control and clinch the title.
Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu pair of Hansini and Ananya, who had enjoyed a bye in the quarterfinals but faltered in the semifinals, regained some ground in the bronze medal playoff. The duo overcame Suhani Mahajan and Avani Tripathi of Uttar Pradesh with a composed display.
Though the UP pair mounted a spirited challenge, pushing the second game into extra points, the Tamil Nadu girls' consistency proved decisive as they wrapped up the match in straight games to secure a podium finish.

Aryna Sabalenka ends Swiatek's Paris reign

Paris, June 5 (UNI) World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka shattered Iga Swiatek's 26-match winning streak at Roland-Garros on Thursday, outlasting the four-time champion 7-6(1), 4-6, 6-0 in a pulsating semifinal under the roof of Court Philippe-Chatrier. With the win, Sabalenka stormed into her third consecutive Grand Slam final and her maiden title clash at the Paris major, assuring fans of a new Roland-Garros women's champion on Saturday. In a high-octane showdown between the two dominant forces of recent years, Sabalenka brought firepower and composure, especially in the decisive third set, where she didn't concede a single game or commit an unforced error. 'Honestly it feels incredible, but also, I understand that the job is not done yet,' Sabalenka said after registering only her fifth win in 13 meetings against the Polish star. 'She's the toughest opponent, especially on clay, especially here. I'm proud I managed this tricky match and came through.' Swiatek, who was bidding to become the first woman since Justine Henin to win four consecutive Roland-Garros titles, acknowledged being outplayed. 'The pace was from her super fast,' she admitted. 'She played as hard as possible and pretty risky. It was hard to get into any rally.' The Belarusian looked in ominous form from the outset, quickly racing to a 4-1 lead with aggressive returns and flatter forehands that neutralised Swiatek's rhythm. Though the fifth seed clawed back to take the second set, Sabalenka regrouped brilliantly in the third. Sabalenka's clinical performance marked her 11th Grand Slam semifinal, the most since Maria Sharapova, and made her the fourth woman this century — after Justine Henin, Serena Williams, and Venus Williams — to reach three straight major finals. The top seed now awaits either second seed Coco Gauff or local sensation Loïs Boisson in Saturday's championship match, with a chance to become the first woman since Serena Williams to win three different Grand Slam titles. 'If I'm able to get this trophy, it's going to mean the world to us,' said an emotional Sabalenka. 'For so long, people told me clay wasn't my surface. But we've worked hard and now, I actually enjoy playing on it.' With the queen of clay dethroned, all eyes now turn to the final, where a new champion will be crowned in the heart of Paris. Gauff ends Boisson's dream run, storms into finals

Paris, June 5 (UNI) World No. 2 Coco Gauff delivered a commanding performance to end French wildcard Lois Boisson's remarkable run at Roland-Garros, securing a 6-1, 6-2 victory in just 69 minutes on Court Philippe-Chatrier here Thursday. With this win, Gauff advances to her second French Open final and sets up a highly anticipated clash against World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka on Saturday. Gauff, 21, showcased her maturity and composure by neutralizing the fervent home crowd support for Boisson, maintaining focus throughout the match. Her aggressive baseline play and strategic shot selection left little room for the Frenchwoman to mount a challenge. Gauff's dominance was evident as she broke Boisson's serve multiple times, wrapping up the match efficiently. Boisson's journey to the semifinals has been nothing short of extraordinary. Ranked No. 361 at the tournament's outset, she became the first wildcard in the Open Era to reach the French Open semifinals. Her victories over top-seeded players, including World No. 3 Jessica Pegula and No. 6 Mirra Andreeva, captivated fans and marked her as a rising star in women's tennis. Despite the semifinal loss, Boisson is projected to climb over 300 spots in the WTA rankings, potentially entering the top 65 and becoming France's No. 1 female player. The upcoming final between Gauff and Sabalenka promises to be a thrilling encounter. Sabalenka, who ended Iga Swiatek's 26-match French Open winning streak in the semifinals, will be seeking her first Roland-Garros title. This match marks the first French Open women's final featuring the top two seeds in over a decade and is a rematch of the 2023 US Open final, where Gauff claimed her maiden Grand Slam title. The final is scheduled for Saturday, June 7, at 2 PM local time. Fans can expect a high-octane battle between two of the sport's brightest young talents, each aiming to etch their names further into tennis history. UNI BDN RN
