Road closures to know as Merchant City festival celebrates 850 years of Glasgow
Running from today, Friday 18 July to Sunday 20 July, the festival is part of Glasgow's ongoing 850th anniversary celebrations and will feature live performances, street theatre, market stalls and family activities across the Merchant City.
Several roads will be closed to traffic throughout the weekend to accommodate the festivities, Glasgow Live reports.
The event kicks off at midday on Friday with live music and storytelling at the Social Hub stage on Trongate, followed by ceilidh dancing lessons and a mass outdoor ceilidh on Brunswick Street from 4.45pm to 5.30pm.
Folk acts and traditional sessions will continue on the Social Hub stage until 8pm, with additional performances taking place in the atmospheric Ramshorn Graveyard.
To support the event, a number of road closures are in place from 6am on Friday to 11.59pm on Sunday.
Affected streets include Brunswick Street, Bell Street (between Candleriggs and Walls Street), Candleriggs, Garth Street (with local access for resident parking), Wilson Street (between Glassford Street and Candleriggs) and Hutcheson Street.
One of Friday's standout events is the return of the Hip Replacement Disco, which will be held at The Old Fruitmarket from 7pm until midnight. The Tron Theatre will also host the St. Teneu Poetry Competition Awards from 7.30pm.
On Saturday and Sunday, the popular Surge Festival Street Theatre programme takes centre stage, with quirky and interactive performances popping up across the area.
Highlights include 'Charlotte Brontë: Senseless Trash', which reimagines the author as a modern pop culture icon backed by Beyoncé hits; 'Baby Gareth and the Norbert Nannies', starring a towering giant baby; and 'Alien Aquatic', a roaming act that asks what would happen if ocean plastic came to life.
Free live music returns to the Social Hub stage on both weekend days, featuring artists such as Sacred Paws, Lezzer Quest, and a joint performance by Vixen Sound, Wends and Dougie No Pain.
Families can enjoy a variety of free children's activities, including arts and crafts sessions, a unicorn dance party and a family ceilidh.
Meanwhile, shoppers can browse 29 market stalls scattered across the district, open from midday to 6pm on Saturday and Sunday, offering everything from handmade jewellery to street food and art.
The Dockyard Social will also be on site throughout the festival providing a wide selection of food and drink.

Meghan Markle admits hilarious reason why she 'almost didn't marry' Prince Harry in Netflix trailer
Meghan Markle has released the trailer for her upcoming second season of Netflix show With Love, Meghan and it seems there are plenty of royal confessions coming in the new show. Meghan Markle fans are delighted to have finally received a trailer for the second season of the duchess' Netflix show, With Love, Meghan. The 44-year-old's lifestyle and cooking series has shown a new side to the former Suits star as she has proven herself to be very talented in the kitchen. In the upcoming series, it looks as if we're going to get more of an inside look into the royal household as the trailer features Meghan revealing a little-known fact. Towards the end of the trailer, when the Duchess of Sussex is preparing lobster with chef José Andrés, she explains that husband Prince Harry is not a fan of the fancy crustacean, which is typically a pricey meal. She turns to the foodie expert and says "You know who doesn't like lobster? My husband." The chef is left stunned by her admission as he asks: 'And you married him?', leaving Meghan in fits of laughter in response. It's previously been reported that Royal Family members tend to avoid eating seafood, which may have influenced Prince Harry's dislike for lobster. Former royal butler Grant Harrold told the Daily Express in 2022: "When dining, the Royal Family has to be careful with shellfish due to shellfish poisoning due to their work schedules. "Therefore, you will not normally find this on the royal menu." The mum-of-two, who currently resides in Montecito with Harry and kids Archie and Lilibet, is set to welcome more celebrity pals into her kitchen in the second season of her Netflix show. Some of the famous faces who are expected to be getting their hands dirty alongside the duchess include Chrissy Teigen, Queer Eye star Tan France and author and podcaster, Jay Shetty, Cosmopolitan reports. With Love, Meghan is set to return for its second season on the streaming platform on August 26. Meghan announced the news on Instagram to her 4M Instagram followers on Wednesday evening as she dropped the new trailer and wrote: "The best moments are made to be shared. With Love, Meghan returns August 26th on Netflix." The show is just one programme amidst Harry and Meghan's lucrative deal with Netflix, which started in 2020. The Sussexes are also said to be gearing up to produce an on-screen adaptation of the best-selling novel Meet Me at the Lake by Carly Fortune. However, this has been known for quite some time and there is still no release date in sight. Harry and Meghan have also previously broadcasted their tell-all documentary Harry and Meghan, as well as their show Polo. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Commenting on the new slate of shows they have in the works, Meghan said: 'My husband and I feel inspired by our partners who work closely with us and our Archewell Productions team to create thoughtful content across genres that resonates globally, and celebrates our shared vision." Bela Bajaria, Netflix's Chief Content Officer, said: 'Harry and Meghan are influential voices whose stories resonate with audiences everywhere. The response to their work speaks for itself — Harry & Meghan gave viewers an intimate look into their lives and quickly became one of our most-watched documentary series. 'More recently, fans have been inspired by With Love, Meghan, with products from the new As Ever line consistently selling out in record time. We're excited to continue our partnership with Archewell Productions and to entertain our members together.'

Richard Madeley says 'my mum hated me' for life-changing decision he made
ITV Good Morning Britain host Richard Madeley made a life-changing decision at the age of 16 but it seems his mum was not happy about it and 'hated' him for it During today's episode of Good Morning Britain, Richard Madeley confessed that his mother was not pleased with a decision he made in his youth. On Thursday's (August 14) instalment of the ITV programme, the presenter, 69, brought up the topic of A-Level results day. In conversation with his co-host Charlotte Hawkins, he asked: "What did you get, Charlie?" To which she responded: "I got three As". Richard quipped: "Oh there's always one isn't there?!" However, she admitted that these were not her predicted grades and she hadn't performed as well in her mock exams. She explained: "We all went to the school to get them, it was really special and I was not expecting that at all. "I think having not done very well when it came to the mock exams obviously gave me some impetus to think, 'Well, I need to get cracking on this'" The focus then shifted to Richard, who disclosed that he had left school at an early age, reports the Mirror. When Charlotte enquired about his exam results, he said: "Well, I left school at 16 to join the local paper. My mum thought it was a very bad move, my dad thought it was great. "My mum hated me as I started work when I was 16 and she insisted that I go to night school and take A-Levels there. So, I took an English A-Level and I got a B, I think." However, the seasoned broadcaster pointed out that when he sat the exam, he was already two years into his position at the publication, which launched his career. It appeared Richard had made the correct choice as he had climbed to assistant editor and secured a role with the BBC by age 19. Nevertheless, the ITV personality has previously opened up about his difficult school experiences. During a chat on Good Morning Britain, he spoke about being singled out by bullies. He said at the time: "I was at school long before social media and I got really badly bullied through the first two years of my Grammar School, when I was about 12 and 13 years old. "I dread to think had we been online as well, it just would have been a nightmare. "I didn't report it. It was a sense of shame, not a sense of fear, that I was being targeted."
