Open letter to Agong: Upholding the integrity of the judiciary in the appointment of top judges

Letter to editor
WITH the utmost respect and loyalty, I write to Your Majesty as a concerned citizen deeply invested in the preservation of justice, rule of law and institutional integrity within our beloved Malaysia.
The Judiciary stands as the final bastion of hope for justice, equity, and constitutional governance.
However, recent developments have cast a troubling shadow over public confidence in this vital institution.
Allegations of judicial misconduct, procedural irregularities and claims of external interference – whether substantiated or under investigation – have raised legitimate concerns about the health of our judicial system.
In such a climate, the process of appointing top judges assumes even greater importance. The weight of this responsibility lies not only with those who nominate but ultimately with Your Majesty whose constitutional discretion serves as a safeguard against the erosion of judicial independence.
Editor's Note: The Conference of Rulers is expected to decide and announce the appointment of the new Chief Justice today (July 16), according to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
It is respectfully urged that, in considering appointments to the highest offices of the judiciary, Your Majesty:
Insist on transparent and meritorious selection: Candidates must be evaluated based on integrity, independence and a demonstrated commitment to constitutional values, free from political or external influence.
Candidates must be evaluated based on integrity, independence and a demonstrated commitment to constitutional values, free from political or external influence. Encourage full disclosure: In light of recent allegations, it is vital that any concerns surrounding nominees be publicly addressed and cleared through transparent mechanisms before confirmation.
In light of recent allegations, it is vital that any concerns surrounding nominees be publicly addressed and cleared through transparent mechanisms before confirmation. Uphold the constitutional spirit: The Judiciary must not only be impartial but be seen to be so. Confidence in judicial impartiality is crucial to national stability, investor confidence and the moral fabric of our society.
Your Majesty's unique role as the protector of the Federal Constitution and symbol of national unity is especially vital in times of uncertainty.
Malaysians look to the Throne not only for guidance but for assurance that justice shall never be compromised by expediency or hidden interests.
May Allah continue to grant Your Majesty wisdom, strength and compassion in the service of the nation.
Daulat Tuanku.

Anwar: Sejahtera Madani scheme will help eradicate hardcore poverty

KUALA LUMPUR: The government will launch the Sejahtera Madani initiative today as part of efforts to eradicate hardcore poverty, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He said the initiative was a continuation of the government's commitment to supporting the hardcore poor and the poor, through joint efforts by the government and the corporate sector. "Eradicating hardcore poverty has been my priority since the beginning. By the end of 2024, nearly 150,000 hardcore poor households were lifted out of poverty." He said this during a special announcement yesterday that was broadcast live on television channels and social media. Anwar, who is finance minister, said the government had been improving assistance to the people to ease the burden of living expenses since the beginning of his tenure. He said one of the most significant steps was the allocation of RM13 billion for Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah and Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara), the largest such allocation in the nation's history. "Cash assistance under the Social Welfare Department was increased to RM2.9 billion to boost the monthly welfare assistance for the elderly and children from poor families." He said the government also empowered padi farmers by raising the padi floor price to RM1,500 this year, following increases in 2022 and 2023, and increasing the padi price subsidy scheme rate to RM500 in 2023. In the commodity sector, he said the government increased the rubber production incentive to RM3 per kg last year, following increases in 2022 and 2023. He announced a one-off RM100 cash aid to every adult citizen under the Sara programme, postponed the toll rate increase for 10 highways and lowered the RON95 price to RM1.99 per litre. He said more initiatives would be introduced in the 2026 Budget in October. "These are the measures for now. By the end of 2025, we hope to improve with a clearer commitment to provide benefits in the 2026 Budget in October."

New law will regulate BNPL, instant loans, says ministry

KUALA LUMPUR: The new consumer credit law will protect Malaysians from financial risks stemming from uncontrolled credit use and unethical lending practices, said the Finance Ministry. The ministry said the legislation seeks to address challenges posed by the growing digital finance landscape, including hidden risks linked to instant loans and "buy now, pay later" (BNPL) schemes. On Monday, the Dewan Rakyat passed the Credit Consumer Bill 2025 after it was tabled for its second and third readings by Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying. The bill was debated by 23 lawmakers. "The bill will serve as the primary law regulating all credit-related businesses and services," said the ministry. "It will ensure fair conduct by credit providers, mandate transparency in charges and introduce professional guidelines for debt collection and dispute resolution." It added that consumers facing financial hardship would also have access to assistance and advice through authorised and registered channels. "For the first time, a Consumer Credit Commission will be established to regulate service providers previously operating without direct oversight, including leasing companies, factoring firms, debt collection agencies, and non-bank digital financing providers. "The commission will also streamline regulatory functions currently spread across multiple ministries and agencies under one roof, ensuring more uniform and efficient supervision of the credit industry." The ministry said the bill reflected the government's long-term commitment to creating a safer and more inclusive consumer credit ecosystem. Lim had said on Monday that the bill, once gazetted, would introduce integrated regulations in phases. These phases would take into account the industry's level of preparedness and the Consumer Credit Commission's growing capacity, which will be gradually strengthened. She added that the commission would also assume regulatory responsibilities in stages, starting with the currently unregulated credit providers, with full centralisation of oversight expected by 2031.
