Open letter to Agong: Upholding the integrity of the judiciary in the appointment of top judges

Letter to editor
WITH the utmost respect and loyalty, I write to Your Majesty as a concerned citizen deeply invested in the preservation of justice, rule of law and institutional integrity within our beloved Malaysia.
The Judiciary stands as the final bastion of hope for justice, equity, and constitutional governance.
However, recent developments have cast a troubling shadow over public confidence in this vital institution.
Allegations of judicial misconduct, procedural irregularities and claims of external interference – whether substantiated or under investigation – have raised legitimate concerns about the health of our judicial system.
In such a climate, the process of appointing top judges assumes even greater importance. The weight of this responsibility lies not only with those who nominate but ultimately with Your Majesty whose constitutional discretion serves as a safeguard against the erosion of judicial independence.
Editor's Note: The Conference of Rulers is expected to decide and announce the appointment of the new Chief Justice today (July 16), according to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
It is respectfully urged that, in considering appointments to the highest offices of the judiciary, Your Majesty:
Insist on transparent and meritorious selection: Candidates must be evaluated based on integrity, independence and a demonstrated commitment to constitutional values, free from political or external influence.
Candidates must be evaluated based on integrity, independence and a demonstrated commitment to constitutional values, free from political or external influence. Encourage full disclosure: In light of recent allegations, it is vital that any concerns surrounding nominees be publicly addressed and cleared through transparent mechanisms before confirmation.
In light of recent allegations, it is vital that any concerns surrounding nominees be publicly addressed and cleared through transparent mechanisms before confirmation. Uphold the constitutional spirit: The Judiciary must not only be impartial but be seen to be so. Confidence in judicial impartiality is crucial to national stability, investor confidence and the moral fabric of our society.
Your Majesty's unique role as the protector of the Federal Constitution and symbol of national unity is especially vital in times of uncertainty.
Malaysians look to the Throne not only for guidance but for assurance that justice shall never be compromised by expediency or hidden interests.
May Allah continue to grant Your Majesty wisdom, strength and compassion in the service of the nation.
Daulat Tuanku.

PM Anwar urges MPs to adopt civil debate, avoid insults in Parliament

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged Members of Parliament to maintain a culture of civil and respectful debate in the Dewan Rakyat, steering clear of insults and profanity. Speaking at the 2025 Prime Minister's Cup Debate Finals, he highlighted the need for constructive discourse in legislative discussions. Anwar expressed admiration for the young debaters, applauding their confidence, factual accuracy, and well-structured arguments. He suggested that MPs could learn from their disciplined approach to debate. 'I am very proud of the quality of the debate, and I couldn't help but wonder - why shouldn't Members of Parliament learn from this? If we wish to debate, we must first master knowledge, analyse it, process it, and present it effectively,' he said. The Prime Minister also commended the students for their proficiency in Malay and their ability to engage in insightful discussions. He emphasised that debate should focus on clarity and analysis rather than mere rhetoric. The Prime Minister said that values such as manners and ethics must be integral to the national education system, as the vision of building a MADANI Malaysia cannot rely solely on technological advancements like artificial intelligence (AI), digitalisation, and emerging technologies. 'When we talk about a MADANI nation, it must be founded on values and ethics, as articulated by Sheikh Taha Jabir Al-Alwani in his work Adab al-Ikhtilaf,' he said. Acknowledging the complexity of today's challenges and the need for future generations to master new knowledge, Anwar stressed that such advancement must be grounded in tradition, human values, and ethical principles. 'We train our children not only to master new knowledge but also to uphold the values of faith, ethics, and local culture. Without this balance, we risk merely replicating the model of Western countries,' he said. Meanwhile, the 50th edition of the debate saw Sekolah Menengah Agama Persekutuan Kajang crowned champion in the Malay language category, while Sekolah Sultan Alam Shah emerged victorious in the English category. - Bernama

Authorities allowed the rally to proceed following a recent Federal Court ruling that struck down mandatory notification requirements under the Peaceful Assembly Act. Over 2,000 police officers have been deployed across the city, with acting KL police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad warning that any provocation or unlawful behaviour will be met with firm action. Anwar had earlier said the government welcomes criticism and peaceful assembly, but urged protesters to act responsibly. Meanwhile, Chief Secretary to the Government Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar has reminded civil servants that taking part in the rally could lead to disciplinary action.
