This romantic drama that makes me swoon every time is leaving Netflix soon — catch it before it's gone

Given the sheer size and scope of Netflix's catalogue, the popular streaming service changes up its selection of TV series and films frequently, which means that you always have something new to watch — but also that some of our favorites unfortunately have to leave the platform to make room.
That's the case with this month, which will see one of the best LGBTQ+ romances of the past decade sadly saying farewell to the streamer: "Carol," the 2015 historical romantic drama directed by Todd Haynes and starring Cate Blanchett and Roonie Mara, will leave Netflix on Tuesday, June 17.
But before it goes, you should add the emotional, sumptuous queer movie — centered on a forbidden affair between an aspiring female photographer and an older woman going through a difficult divorce — to your next watch list, especially since Pride Month is quickly passing by. Based on the 1952 romance novel "The Price of Salt" by Patricia Highsmith and set over the Christmas season, "Carol" sees Rooney Mara play Therese Belivet, an aspiring photographer who is working in Frankenberg's department store in Manhattan when she encounters a glamorous older woman named Carol Aird (Cate Blanchett), who is searching for a doll for her daughter.
When Carol leaves behind a glove on the counter, Therese mails it back to her using her name and address on file at the store. That fateful meeting, though, turns into something more when Carol calls Frankenberg's to thank Therese for returning her glove and to invite her to lunch.
Their relationship grows over charged trips to Carol's home in New Jersey and clandestine meetings in New York but is complicated by the fact that Carol is in the midst of a divorce from her husband Harge (Kyle Chandler), who is threatening to expose her homosexuality publicly so he could gain full custody of their daughter.
Nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Actress for Blanchett, "Carol" was widely lauded by awards bodies and professional critics alike. On Rotten Tomatoes, the drama boasts an excellent 94% rating and was the best-reviewed romance film of all of 2015 in the site's annual Golden Tomato Awards.
Aided by Haynes' deliberate pacing, the two extraordinary lead actresses offer a heart-stopping portrait of romantic desire, built by careful gestures and stolen glances, two women navigating a world that isn't the most understanding about their sex or their sexuality.
For the Los Angeles Times, Kenneth Turan wrote that their love affair is "a serious melodrama about the geometry of desire, a dreamy example of heightened reality that fully engages emotions despite the exact calculations with which it's been made... "Carol's" lush but controlled visual look is completely intoxicating. This is filmmaking done by masters, an experience to savor."

Astroworld is back in the spotlight and survivors are sharing haunting stories on TikTok
Astroworld is back in the news, and social media has some thoughts. In November 2021, a deadly crowd surge at Travis Scott's Astroworld music festival claimed the lives of 10 people. The then-annual event, held in the rapper's hometown of Houston, became one of the worst concert tragedies in U.S. history. It is now the subject of the new Netflix documentary Trainwreck: The Astroworld Tragedy. With renewed interest in the incident, survivors have taken to social media to share their own footage from the event. 'Only if I knew bro,' one attendee posted on TikTok over footage of himself in the crowd. The audio accompanying the clip is taken from the documentary: 'It started getting pretty hectic,' one survivor says. 'I'm like 'Oh my god I can't take a deep breath,'' adds another. 'Since everyone else is sharing their Astroworld experience,' another TikTok user wrote in the caption of a clip, which shows him tightly packed in the crowd as Scott performs. 'Not too long after this I got bumped into due to the crowd swaying and ended up falling on top of someone in the fetal position,' he wrote. 'We ended up getting out but man it was a struggle.' In other horrifying footage, the panicking audience can be heard calling for help. 'I've never posted this video before, rest in peace to all innocent lives lost,' the closed captions read over the video. Even before Scott took the stage, the crowd seemed to sense something was wrong. 'We are gonna die,' one attendee 'jokes' in a clip, now with 10.3 million views, filming the unsafe conditions. 'Saying this as a joke but on the inside this was a real feeling,' she wrote in the closed captions. 'This about to be bad when it starts,' another can be heard saying. 'Bro literally called it,' the captions add. 'I believe Astroworld 2021 was not an accident,' crowd safety expert Scott Davidson says in the documentary. 'It was an inevitability due to the lack of foresight and the abandonment of basic safety protocols.' Nearly 5,000 people were injured as a result of the crush. The Netflix documentary, which premiered on June 10, features interviews with several survivors. In total, 10 people lost their lives: Axel Acosta, Danish Baig, Rudy Peña, Madison Dubiski, Franco Patiño, Jacob Jurinek, John Hilgert, Bharti Shahani, Brianna Rodriguez, and Ezra Blount, who was just nine years old.

Netflix real estate agent Sara Burack killed in Hamptons hit-and-run
NEW YORK — Netflix star Sara Burack, best known as a luxury real estate agent who appeared on 'Million Dollar Beach House,' has died at age 40 in a Hamptons Bay hit-and-run. Burack was discovered lying unconscious on the side of Montauk Highway, near Villa Paul Restaurant, at around 2:45 a.m. Thursday. Responding officers found her with serious injuries indicating she'd been hit by a car, according to Southampton Town Police. She was immediately rushed to Stony Brook University Hospital, where she died that afternoon, confirmed her friend and fellow real estate agent Paulette Orlando-Corsair. Orlando-Corsair said Burack suffered severe injuries to her head, brain and liver, as well as a broken leg. Police on Friday were still on the hunt for the driver, who fled the scene of the crash, as well as for information on the vehicle involved. Authorities have asked the public to come forward with any leads that can help identify the suspect. Burack lived in Southampton and was a successful broker and former agent with Nest Seekers International, a luxury firm with offices in New York City, the Hamptons, Connecticut and New Jersey. 'My family has a commercial construction material sales business that I spent many years of my life working for,' Burack told in 2020. 'I have always been intrigued by real estate projects and decided to become a broker after my experience as a summer property manager in the summer house I would rent.' 'I have been spending half the year in the Hamptons for the past 11 years,' she added. 'It was only natural to turn my love for real estate into a blossoming career.' Burack starred on the reality series 'Million Dollar Beach House' in 2020. The show followed a group of young and hungry real estate agents as they competed to seal the deal on luxury listings in the Hamptons. Burack is survived by her parents, sister and brother-in-law.

Renfrew Pride celebrates with a race and a community picnic in downtown Renfrew
Renfrew – Last Saturday's Renfrew Pride Picnic in Low Square was certainly the most colourful and diverse event held so far this year with non-stop singing and dancing throughout the day. The event, sponsored by Renfrew Pride and pflagRenfrew County, attracted visitors from Pembroke, Arnprior, Ottawa and Quebec who enjoyed music, artistic performances and a barbeque lunch. In celebration of Pride month, two events were held and organized by members of the local LGBTQ2S+ community. Renfrew hosted its second annual Colour Run that started from Ma-te-Way Park at 10:30 a.m. with runners, walkers and a couple of cyclists heading out on a 3.5 km trek along the Millennium Trail, Lisgar Avenue and the Algonquin Trail to the finish line on Railway Avenue and Low Square. When the first of 10 booths/display tents opened at 11 a.m. there were several curious visitors and residents who found a spot and enjoyed the beautiful sunny skies along with musical performers. Some were treated to a special reading by Pembroke resident and drag queen Toxxic Waist. The bombastic artist, along with her special friend, Minnie Mouse of Disney fame, read stories to both children and adults and encouraged members of the audience to join them when they sang songs. Among the displays were information booths with literature and pamphlets explaining the importance of the day, handmade jewelry and crafts, and food tents. Volunteers were kept busy handing out free hot dogs and hamburgers to more than 150 people throughout the day. When she wasn't busy entertaining the crowd, Toxxic Waist took a moment to reflect on the symbolism and importance of Pride Month (June) and the rare chance for members of her community to be among those who accept them as they are. 'Events like the Colour Run and this picnic are held not only to celebrate the amazing diversity of our community, but it allows people to come and meet us and get to know us and hopefully educate them on our lives and how we just want to live our lives in a safe, welcoming environment,' she said. 'We want people, especially young people, to understand it's okay to be different and it's okay to be yourself. And, of course, we want to have fun.' Error!
