Ringgit opens lower vs greenback amid challenging global economy

The Star09-06-2025
KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit opened lower against the US dollar on Monday as the greenback strengthened amid renewed volatility from a challenging global economy outlook for the second half of 2025.
At 8.03 am, the local note stood at 4.2375/2560 against the greenback, easing from Friday's close of 4.2270/2360.
Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the ringgit is expected to range between 4.23 and 4.24 today, following the stronger-than-expected United States (US) nonfarm payroll (NFP) data for May.
He highlighted that the US NFP rose 139,000 in May, higher than the consensus estimate of 126,000, while the unemployment rate was sustained at 4.2 per cent for three consecutive months, pushing the US dollar index (DXY) higher on Friday to 99.190 points.
"The latest NFP print seems to suggest that the labour market in the US is still fairly resilient despite having to contend with higher tariffs,' he told Bernama.
Nonetheless, Mohd Afzanizam said, April's NFP was revised lower to 147,000 from 177,000, and the US labour force participation rate declined to 62.4 per cent in May from 62.6 per cent in April.
"On that note, while the labour market is still chugging along, signs of further moderation in the data series have been gradually emerging.
"As business and consumer sentiments remain weak, the outlook for the second half of 2025 economy looks increasingly challenging. Hence, the case for a lower US Federal Fund Rate is gaining momentum in our view,' he added.
He noted that the ringgit has gained against the greenback, with USDMYR closing at 4.2315, giving a week-on-week appreciation of 0.6 per cent last week.
At the early session, the ringgit traded mostly lower against a basket of major currencies.
It slightly increased against the Japanese yen to 2.9305/9435 from Friday's 2.9324/9390, but depreciated versus the British pound to 5.7367/7618 from 5.7212/7334 and eased vis-a-vis the euro to 4.8341/8552 from 4.8268/8371.
The local currency also traded mostly lower against most of its ASEAN peers.
It rose versus the Thai baht to 12.9468/13.0121 from 12.9599/9947 at Friday's close, while the ringgit decreased against the Singapore dollar to 3.2892/3041 from 3.2862/2934, dropped against the Philippine peso to 7.60/7.64 from 7.58/7.60 and fell against the Indonesian rupiah to 260.1/261.4 from 259.5/260.2. - Bernama

Privatisation without governance is 'piratisation', says Anwar

PUTRAJAYA: Privatisation that ignores governance and accountability risks becoming "robbery by the minute," or what Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim described as "piratisation." Speaking at the launch of Multimedia University's (MMU) Faculty of Artificial Intelligence and Engineering (FAIE) in Cyberjaya today, Anwar said Malaysia must not repeat past mistakes in privatisation as the country embraces digital transformation and artificial intelligence (AI). Drawing parallels with the global wave of privatisation in the 1980s under then-British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, he said Malaysia adopted the policy without proper processes, often handing major enterprises to politically connected companies. "We sometimes forget that privatisation without transparency and due process means we only privatise to benefit cronies and families. "Without good governance, the outcomes will only benefit a select few. For example, the privatisation of Malaysia Airlines was carried out non-transparently, costing billions, and only in the past two or three years has it managed to recover," he added. Anwar stressed that poor governance meant many companies expected to benefit the nation and its people instead collapsed, forcing the government to absorb huge debts. "And what was the result? Many of these companies, initially expected to benefit the nation and its people, eventually had to be propped up by the government due to massive losses — becoming a huge debt burden to be borne by the rakyat." He said this practice, once described by former Opposition Leader Lim Kit Siang as "piratisation," showed why principles of good governance must guide all reforms. "That is why, whether it's computerisation, digital transformation or AI, principles of good governance must always be upheld," Anwar said. He noted that the reminder comes ahead of the 13th Malaysia Plan, where governance has been identified as a central pillar alongside efforts to "raise the ceiling" of economic growth and "raise the floor" of inclusivity. "We must 'raise the ceiling' by enhancing the nation's technological capacity, while at the same time 'raise the floor' so that ordinary people also benefit," he said. Anwar added that without governance, efforts in digitalisation and AI risked widening inequality and fuelling corruption. Referring to management guru Peter Drucker, he noted that in some cases, government-run entities can even outperform privatised ones if integrity and accountability are upheld. "Privatisation is not a mystical law. Without proper governance, sound policies and a culture of integrity, it becomes exploitation rather than reform," he said. Also present at the launch were Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo and Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir.

Malaysia To Push For Substantial Conclusion Of DEFA Negotiations At AEM Meeting

BUSINESS By Nur Ashikin Abdul Aziz SINGAPORE, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- Malaysia will push for a 'substantial conclusion' of the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA) at the ASEAN Economic Ministers' (AEM) Meeting from Sept 24 to 26 in Kuala Lumpur, said Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. Before the meeting in Malaysia's capital, the ministers will also convene at a special meeting on DEFA on Aug 28 via video conference, also to be chaired by Tengku Zafrul. 'We will push for DEFA because it's important for ASEAN, especially Malaysia, as it is one of our PEDs (Priority Economic Deliverables) to be delivered this year. The good news is that we have completed the negotiations for two PEDs, which are the ASEAN-China Free Trade Agreement (ACFTA) and the ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement (ATIGA), that are targeted to be signed in October,' he told Bernama after participating in the Bursa Malaysia Invest Malaysia session as part of the Macquarie ASEAN Conference here. Tengku Zafrul stated that the DEFA, the first of its kind in any regional framework, will enable small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to become part of a more inclusive ASEAN intra-trade ecosystem. He noted that of the 18 PEDs, half fall under the AEM purview, and he is confident they will be able to deliver all of them before the end of Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship. The minister also noted that his team was in New Delhi last week for negotiations on the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA) Review, and he was informed that there had been some positive progress towards its substantial conclusion. In his keynote address, the minister said that Malaysia, as ASEAN Chair, is also pushing to unlock greater investability through deliverables such as the adoption of the ASEAN Sustainable Investment Guidelines (ASIG) and by catalysing access to financing for a just transition and climate resilience in the region. He added that ASEAN is also striving to make its capital markets more sustainable, connected, and inclusive, and has made significant strides, from expanding green finance instruments to attracting green investments. 'As the region continues to invest in sustainable infrastructure, during our year as Chair, Malaysia also hopes to pave the way for sector-specific initiatives, including an ASEAN EV Roadmap, a Minerals Development Action Plan, and an ASEAN Framework for an Integrated Semiconductor Supply Chain,' he said.

FTA With South Korea Concluded, Will Continue To Engage All Countries

GENERAL SINGAPORE, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has concluded its free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations with South Korea and is expected to sign the document in October, said Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Aziz. Speaking at a Bursa Malaysia Invest Malaysia fireside chat session, he said the move is part of the country's continuous engagement with global partners to gain broader market access, particularly amid rising geopolitical uncertainty. 'To date, we have 18 FTAs, both bilateral and multilateral. We've just signed two this year. We have resumed talks with the EU this year,' he said during the session, which was moderated by Bursa Malaysia chief executive officer Datuk Fad'l Mohamed. The session was held as part of the Macquarie ASEAN Conference here. When asked about Malaysia's engagement with BRICS, despite perceived threats from US President Donald Trump, Tengku Zafrul said it is important for Malaysia to remain consistent in its approach and to treat all countries equally. 'We are partners today. There are many other countries who are already members, and what's important is that all these countries are also members of other economic blocs. So this will continue,' he said. He also emphasised the importance of Malaysia maintaining a neutral stance. 'Malaysia can't afford to. I think ASEAN is also playing that card well where we engage all parties,' he added. Meanwhile, in his keynote address, Tengku Zafrul said that despite the current uncertainty, ASEAN's opportunity has not disappeared, but merely evolved.
