'We Can't Forget 2021': Indonesia's West Sulawesi Prepares For The Next Big Quake

JAKARTA, June 17 (Bernama) -- The devastation of January 16, 2021, still lingers in West Sulawesi, when a 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck before dawn, killing 105 people, injuring thousands, and causing widespread destruction across the province.
Four years later, local officials, emergency responders and community members returned to the epicentre on Monday not to mourn the tragedy of the past, but to prepare for the possibility of it happening again.

In a large-scale simulation, the province tested its emergency response to a modelled 7.5-magnitude earthquake striking the coastal districts of Majene and Mamuju, with a scenario projecting over 1,000 fatalities and 200,000 displaced residents.
Coordinated by Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), the exercise brought together government officials, military and police units, humanitarian organisations, and local communities in a test of speed, coordination and resilience.
BNPB senior trainer Apriyuanda G. Bayu Pradana stated that the activities, which included a tabletop exercise and a command post simulation, were designed to strengthen coordination between agencies within the emergency command system.
'Ultimately, we aim to generate recommendations to improve policy and emergency planning,' he said in a statement.
West Sulawesi lies along the seismically active Mamuju thrust fault and remains at high risk of major earthquakes and tsunamis.
Acting provincial secretary Herdin Ismail said the drill reflected the joint commitment of BNPB and the provincial government to cultivate a culture of disaster awareness and strengthen local preparedness as the frontline in disaster management.

Security guard braves dumpsite stench to earn extra income for family
GUA MUSANG: For the past two years, Wan Azli Wan Abdullah has grown accustomed to the pungent, fishy odour of rubbish as he searches for recyclable items to earn extra income to support his family. The 37-year-old security guard at a private company spends his spare time collecting discarded items at a dumpsite near Kampung Kundur here. "With a salary of RM1,700 a month, it's just not enough to cover living expenses, especially with rising costs. That's why I took this job, even if people look down on me. "I don't mind what others say. I just want to earn halal money to support my wife and children, aged four to 10," he told reporters at the dumpsite recently, adding that among the items he picked up were plastic bottles and cans. Wan Azli, who lives in Kampung Rahmat, said he always took pride in his work, despite being labelled a rubbish collector. "I will spend the week collecting all these items before selling them to scrap dealers. "The most valuable items are copper, which I can sell for RM25 per kg, while beverage cans go for RM3 and plastic bottles for RM0.40 per kg," he said, adding that he could earn up to RM400 a month. Wan Azli said he spent four days a week collecting and separating solid waste from 8am until noon. "Sometimes my father-in-law, Hassan Sudin, 58, joins me in collecting these used items. In fact, there are almost 20 others who also make a living at this dumpsite," he said. – Bernama

Dozens injured after magnitude-6 quake strikes Sulawesi, Indonesia
The authorities said there was no potential for a tsunami. – AFP file photo JAKARTA (Aug 17): At least 29 people were injured, including two in a critical condition, after a magnitude-6 earthquake struck the island of Sulawesi in central Indonesia on Sunday morning, German Press Agency (dpa) reported, citing an official. Thirteen of the injured have been rushed to medical facilities in Central Sulawesi province's Poso and Tokorondo districts due to injuries sustained by the falling debris from a damaged house of worship, said Abdul Muhari, spokesman for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB). The quake also damaged a church in Masani village, while the number of displaced residents is still being verified. The quake struck Poso at 5.38 am on Sunday (2138 GMT Saturday) with the epicentre at a depth of 10 kilometres. The authorities said there was no potential for a tsunami. The tremor, which lasted about 15 seconds, was strongly felt in several villages in Poso Pesisir district, prompting residents to flee their homes. In neighbouring Sigi district, the quake was felt moderately for about seven seconds, but no casualties or damage were reported.
