Global stage: Nga at the UN-Habitat assembly.
PETALING JAYA: Malaysia has marked a historic moment with the assumption of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) general assembly's presidency for the 2025-2029 term.
All 193 countries unanimously approved Malaysia's presidency during the UN-Habitat assembly in Nairobi yesterday.
During this term, Malaysia will hold the presidency and a seat on the executive board jointly with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to represent the Asia-Pacific region.
The announcement was made during the election of the officers of the bureau at the UN-Habitat assembly in Nairobi, Kenya.
Malaysia took over the role from Mexico, which represented the Latin America and Caribbean region in the previous 2019-2025 term.
Established in 1977, the UN Habitat is headquartered in Nairobi. It became a full programme under the UN general assembly in 2001.
This is the first time in 15 years that a Malaysian has chaired a UN body since Tan Sri Hamidon Ali served as president of the United Nations Economic and Social Council in 2010.
Previously, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim served as the president of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) in 1988. Tan Sri Razali Ismail was the president of the UN general assembly from 1996 to 1997.
The Malaysian delegation in Nairobi yesterday was led by Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming.
'We take on this role as president together with our esteemed colleagues from the UAE.
'This shared commitment symbolises regional solidarity and our dedication to urban sustainability. Together, we will ensure that this assembly bridges global ambitions with local realities,' said Nga during his acceptance speech at the UN-Habitat assembly.
He said it is a strong testament to the country to be entrusted with the presidency by a universal UN body involving 193 member states.
'It not only proves that our country has returned to the international stage under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim but also highlights our growing international influence.
'In light of this latest development, the support of the people is more important than ever.'
He also said in the co-presidency with the UAE, Malaysia stands ready to lead with integrity, inclusivity and with steadfast dedication to the United Nations' principles.
To strengthen multilateralism and the UN-Habitat agenda, Nga said Malaysia and the UAE are calling upon member states to redouble their efforts in implementing the New Urban Agenda.
In a statement, Nga said Malaysia is prepared to drive high-level dialogue and action on pressing global urban challenges during its presidency.
This includes facilitating international consensus on adequate housing, inclusive city planning, climate adaptation and financing for urban resilience, he said.
'We are also advancing the implementation of the New Urban Agenda through legal and policy reforms that aim to tackle poverty, socioeconomic inequality and informal settlements – many of which are increasingly concentrated in urban areas.
'These efforts are embedded in our commitment to sustainable and inclusive development, particularly through affordable housing, urban renewal and innovative waste management,' he said.
Nga said Malaysia will prioritise practical and collaborative solutions informed by real-world experiences and delivered through multilateral partnerships with governments, civil society and the private sector, in line with the concept of the 4P principle: People-Public-Private Partnership.
'This is a call to lead with purpose, to build cities that are not just smarter but more inclusive. Cities that care not only for infrastructure but for people. Cities that serve as engines of opportunity, dignity and hope,' he said.

MACC says assets seized from ‘Tan Sri' in highway sukuk scandal now reach RM143m

KUALA LUMPUR, June 4 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has seized assets linked to the misuse of sukuk funds of the construction of a highway in Klang Valley believed to be owned by a highway concessionaire with a Tan Sri title totalling RM143 million during an operation conducted last week. Its chief commissioner, Tan Sri Azam Baki said the seizures include 14 individual accounts totalling RM4.5 million, eight company accounts totalling RM33 million, luxury condominium and land worth RM24.5 million, nine cars worth RM7.65 million, and 13 cars that have yet to be handed over to the investigation team. Other items seized include luxury watches worth RM25 million, handbags worth RM3 million, jewellery and diamonds (RM6 million), four horses (RM400,000), alcoholic beverages (RM3 million), foreign assets worth more than RM15 million and around RM20 million in gambling activities. 'Preliminary investigations revealed there was misconduct between 2016 and 2020 involving approved sukuk funds of about RM1.35 billion, involving false claims of about RM360 million and RM416 million and RM50 million in other bank facility loans. 'The RM1.67 billion highway project also failed to be completed according to schedule and investigations are focused on bribes worth RM12 million paid to certain parties as inducement in helping the cash flow out and back to the suspect,' he said in a statement last night, adding that the proceeds were also believed to have been used in money laundering activities. He explained that to embezzle the funds, the parties involved were believed to have used professionals such as auditors, financial experts, engineers and shell companies. 'Until now, the MACC has yet to take the Tan Sri's statement as he is in a private hospital ward and today the investigating officer will get confirmation from the doctor on the status of the Tan Sri's health before recording his statement. 'Meanwhile, the number of witness statements stands at 45, and those witnesses who have given their statements have been asked to provide further statements,' he said, adding that the investigating team is also tracking down luxury vehicles and properties belonging to the Tan Sri abroad, including in London and Switzerland. The investigation is focused on the true amount of luxury liquor kept by the Tan Sri and the possibility that funds have been transferred to other accounts, he said. He added that an asset declaration notice has been handed to the Tan Sri and other related parties. — Bernama

Brunei Sultan Recovers, Returns Home After Hospital Stay

KUALA LUMPUR: Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah has returned back to his home country and was in a 'good condition', Malaysian premier Anwar Ibrahim said late on Tuesday. Sultan Hassanal was admitted to hospital in Kuala Lumpur a week ago due to fatigue, though his office had insisted the world's longest-serving monarch was in 'good health'. Anwar said he visited the sultan Tuesday afternoon 'before he departed for Bandar Seri Begawan,' the oil-rich state's capital. 'Praise be to God, His Majesty is in good condition and the recovery process went well after (he was) discharged,' Anwar posted on Facebook. The 78-year-old sultan was in Kuala Lumpur for a summit with other Association of Southeast Asian Nations leaders. A statement from the Brunei prime minister's office -- a position held by the sultan -- last week said the monarch had been feeling tired and that Malaysian health experts had advised him to rest for a few days at the National Heart Institute. Sultan Hassanal ascended the throne in 1967. He is one of the richest people on the planet, and comes from a family that has ruled Brunei, a small Muslim nation perched on the north of the tropical island of Borneo, for more than 600 years. His decades ruling Brunei have seen the country gain full independence from Britain and living standards soar to among the highest globally. But his reign has also been marked by controversies including the introduction of tough Islamic laws legislating penalties such as severing of limbs and death by stoning.
