Celtic win Scottish Premiership title after Pope Francis tribute and ticket price protest at Dundee United

Yahoo26-04-2025

Celtic have won the Scottish Premiership for the fourth year in a row after beating Dundee United 5-0 as their fans protested against the cost of match tickets and a tribute was made to Pope Francis on the day of his funeral.
It's Celtic's 13th title in 14 years and manager Brendan Rodgers's 11th major trophy with the Glasgow club.
The Bhoys, as the club are also known, can now complete their sixth treble in nine seasons, and Rodgers' third, when they face Aberdeen in next month's Scottish Cup final.

Winger James Forrest picked up a record 26th winners' medal, one more than Bobby Lennox, who was part of the famous "Lisbon Lions" side that won the European Cup in 1967.
Nicolas Kuhn and Adam Idah both scored twice at Tannadice, as Celtic recorded their 27th victory of the campaign, seven more than Rangers, in second place in the table, 18 points behind their cross-city rivals.
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers told Sky Sports he was "very hungry to win. We want to be the most successful team we can be.
"I will be here next year, 200%. I said 150% a few weeks ago. I have never been happier here.
"Leading into this game there was a little bit of negativity around the league and the competition, but we can only concentrate on ourselves. Our mentality has been so, so good.
"The competition is for everyone. When it matters, this team has produced, it's not our fault we're 18 points clear and scoring goals.
"It's important to keep the motivation and the hunger at this stage of the season and we know what we want to achieve and what records we want to beat."
The game was held up after around 11 minutes when Celtic's fans among the crowd of more than 13,500 threw dozens of tangerines onto the pitch.
They were protesting against Dundee United's decision to charge visiting adult fans up to £42 to see the game when it became clear the leaders would clinch the title with a draw. Home fans were charged as little as £10, reports said.
Supporters chanted about the prices as the pieces of fruit landed on the turf and held up a banner saying: "Enjoy the fruits of our labour" before Celtic's players helped clear them off the pitch.
Celtic had complained to the Professional Football League after the hosts set the ticket prices.
Dundee United's nickname is the Tangerines, and they traditionally play in an orange kit.
One Celtic fan posted a picture on X of the fruit on the pitch, joking there were "more tangerines in this picture than [fiercest rivals] Rangers have won trophies in the last 15 years!!!!".
There was a further, shorter delay early in the second half when about 20 footballs came flying on to the pitch from the same stand behind the goal as United goalkeeper Jack Walton was about to take a goal-kick.
With their team leading 4-0, Celtic fans held up a new banner which said: "Stop pricing fans out of football."
Before kick-off, a well-observed minute's silence was held for Pope Francis on the day of his funeral in Rome.

Celtic fans also paid tribute with banners and Vatican flags and chanted "Papa Francesco" before the silence began and it was perfectly observed after a few early shouts.
A Celtic delegation, including manager Brendan Rodgers, his squad, and staff, had a private audience with the Pope after a match in Rome in 2023.

Postecoglou sacked by Spurs despite ending trophy drought

Ange Postecoglou took Tottenham to a Europa League triumph but it was not enough to save his job (JUSTIN TALLIS) Ange Postecoglou was sacked as Tottenham manager on Friday, just 16 days after the Australian ended the club's 17-year trophy drought by winning the Europa League. Postecoglou led Tottenham to a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in Bilbao to clinch the north Londoners' first European prize in 41 years and secure a place in next season's Champions League. Advertisement But the Australian paid the price for Tottenham's worst domestic season since they were relegated from the top flight in 1976-77. "Following a review of performances and after significant reflection, the Club can announce that Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties," a statement on Tottenham's official X account said. Exactly two years after he was hired from Celtic, Postecoglou's eventful spell in north London was brought to a end by chairman Daniel Levy. Tottenham lost 22 of their 38 Premier League games to finish 17th in the table, above only relegated trio Leicester, Ipswich and Southampton. Advertisement "The Board has unanimously concluded that it is in the best interests of the club for a change to take place," the statement said. "Whilst winning the Europa League this season ranks as one of the club's greatest moments, we cannot base our decision on emotions aligned to this triumph." smg/gj

🎥 Thelwell outlines his Rangers vision as Martin's reign begins

A summer of change highlights the blue half of Glasgow as Scottish giants Rangers welcome two new faces to Ibrox. Former Southampton manager Russell Martin will now patrol the touchline at the storied ground, while Kevin Thelwell sits above him as the new Sporting Director. Advertisement And for the first time since his arrival, Thelwell sat down to discuss his vision for the club with RangersTV as the club looks to switch gears in the hope of once again properly challenging bitter rivals Celtic at the top of the SPL. "The first week has been great," he said. "It's been busy, as you can imagine, and there's been a lot of work to do." "There have been a lot of opportunities to visit Ibrox and the training facilities, begin talking to people, and of course, we appointed a new Head Coach." "We've had a bit going on, but it's nice to, at last, get my feet under the table. I'm very much looking forward to working ahead." Advertisement On his decision to come aboard at Ibrox, Thelwell could not be more sure when it comes to taking up his new role. "It was an easy decision. Rangers are a huge football club and I've been very lucky on many occasions to be able to visit here as part of scouting and recruitment." "For me, it's an incredible football club and an incredible opportunity." "Our reality is that we've been in a low moment for a little while, but the opportunity to flip that ship is worth fighting for, which I'm very much looking forward to." As his first key decision, Thelwell was heavily involved in appointing Martin; one which he has full confidence in. Advertisement "I listened to Russell in his [unveiling] press conference and he's right: we're all going to be all in to get Rangers into a spot whereby we start to win again." "Right from the very start, it was clear to me, and the other guys involved in the process, that Russell was the standout candidate. He was outstanding." "He has a lot of experience as a manager and head coach, and over the course of that career it's been clear to see that he's sharpened that approach in his methods, in terms of technical, tactical, and also from a personal perspective." It's still very early days as the club looks to course-correct, but signs of positivity are evident and glaring. 📸 Richard Heathcote - 2024 Getty Images
